OT: Drawing on board expertise: Toms River for a retirement residence?

Sort of odd-topic to where this dialogue has taken the thread but… There are studies that show that retirees are happier the closer they are to their families, particularly grandchildren. There is a Goldilocks rule in that too close is also uncomfortable. I would wager the sweet spot to be...

OT: Proposal for 80 school football Super League

We are going to look back at the BCS era as the golden age of college football, aren't we....

    OT: Retiring early

I've seen this with my parents. They saved enough to be comfortable and then Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Thank goodness they started to travel when my sister and I were still in college. If they had waited until they had 2MM, it would have been too late...

OT: Mike Tyson returning to the ring

Tyson can still put in a quality round. But the longer it goes, it’s going to favor Jake Paul.

Simple joys with family and friends. Mostly everything walkable. That’s a dream retirement right there…

    OT: Retiring early

This is what I meant. I would wait until my kids are more established in their careers before telling them they could be in line for a significant windfall. The last thing I want is for one of them to turn around and tell me they are quitting school to become a youtuber, soccer player, (fill...

    OT: Retiring early

IMO, if your kids believe they are in line for a large inheritance, it'll have a negative effect on their drive and desire for personal success. I'll just do what my folks did for me: Pay for college. Help with weddings. Offer home down payment assistance (we declined). Jumpstart grandkids'...

    OT: Retiring early

I was just giving props to those who reached that milestone. Personally, I could live on less. Much less. My ideal retirement involves reading, cooking, and BBQ/board games/video games/low impact outdoor stuff with my friends. Now my wife on the other hand......

    OT: Retiring early

Congratulations to many of you on this thread. Outside of the big salary people, it must have taken several years (decades?) of self-discipline to get to the position where a 4-6MM nest egg is a possibility/reality.

    OT: Retiring early

What rate of return are y’all plugging into the calculators..? Is 8% pre and 6% post retirement the standard?

    OT: Retiring early

When I first started working, we had an HR benefits presentation where we were basically told we needed millions to retire. Talk about scared straight. Since then, all financial decisions are made with that goal in mind. That said, either everyone else around me is in a 300K+ household income...

OT: Parochial school, when is best time to start

If you're going for religious purposes, as soon as possible is best, IMO. Some of my fondest memories were from K-8 and all the different holidays/celebrations around the school/church. The "total immersion" helps children "live" what they are currently learning. It's definitely a financial...

OT: Official 2024 Philadelphia Phillies Season Thread

Usually, that’s my take as well. But being that we’ve now made two consecutive long playoff runs, the expectation should be to win it all while the window is still open for this core roster.

OT: Official 2024 Philadelphia Phillies Season Thread

That’s exactly what I’m saying: I wouldn’t follow Rutgers, Philly sports, or sports in general if all I cared about was winning it all. I mentioned also ran in response to needing to fix the bottom of our lineup. If they don’t fix it, we aren’t winning it all. And that’s all I care about. At...

OT: Official 2024 Philadelphia Phillies Season Thread

I’m not calling anyone out. I’m saying unless you win it all, you’re an also ran. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a team’s success even if they didn’t win a title. ‘93 Phillies remains my favorite team of all time. ‘06 Rutgers a close second. And the year the Sixers won game one...

OT: Official 2024 Philadelphia Phillies Season Thread

TBH, for me, winning a pennant isn’t enough. You gotta win it all. I’ll stand by my post history that I’m actually a pretty optimistic fan (Rutgers & Philly sports alike).

OT: "half of college grads are working jobs that don't use their degrees"

I’m an Econ major. I graduated by the skin of my teeth and basically floundered around dead-end positions for the first 5 years out of school. Once I built up my resume a bit, I was finally able to get my career on track. Lesson: pick the right college/major and get good grades. That way you...

OT: "half of college grads are working jobs that don't use their degrees"

Need to look at college and degree choice as an investment. In the past, any college degree likely afforded you a good life. But now a college degree has become what the high school degree once was: a bare minimum credential.
