Love Caleb and hope he gets a 2way, but thought this was funny

The impact of his “poor” offense relative to his peer competition to earn on spot on the end of an NBA roster is exaggerated. Look, I love Ron, but using him as an example, the reality is he scored his 20 NBA points for the Raptors in the last few minutes of lopsided games. Having him available didn’t actually help the Raptors win any games.

Caleb’s different from most of the 2 way contenders for these spots in that he’s not going to light up the scoreboard in meaningless minutes because he’s not a lights out shooter. But he’s much more likely to be used situationally to actually help a team. His defense would also be valuable for practice against the first team offense.

If Caleb isn't a threat to score, teams don't need to guard him. That makes it harder for the other four guys on his team to score. So unless you're saying you would sub him in and out for a single defensive possession, I'm not sure I agree. He still needs to continue working hard on his offense if he wants to stick around the NBA. He knows this.

It’s simply not true that he’s not “a threat to score”. A more accurate statement is that he’s a very poor catch and shoot long range shooter who also at times has a tendency to miss head scratching bunny put backs and fast break opportunities.

All this said - a defense cannot simply ignore Caleb and double someone else in the halfcourt sets. What they can, and will do, is not guard him tightly on the perimeter allowing the open 3 point looks. This gives certain types of zone defenses an edge but it’s not as helpful in a man scheme. Caleb can burn you on a back door cut. If he’s given too much space, he can also burn you on dribble penetration in mid range. He’s an above average passer which is showing more now that he’s playing with other elite players. He’s not an iso stud by any stretch, but he’s actually not as bad on a relative basis in iso as he is catch and shoot.

Caleb will not be used in real games to help an nba team this year. Maybe eventually but this year he’ll be in the G league if given the 2 way contract.

Yes and no. If he got called up the way RHJ did, he’d probably have more of a chance of checking in to play a few meaningful minutes. Situationally, if he’s on an active roster and a defensive stop is needed, he could easily be among the best 5 options to put on the floor and get in.
