1989 NCAA Tournament, #4 Iowa vs #13 RUTGERS (VIDEO)

Was at the game. Left to come back home and skipped the night session. That game was a classic. Princeton vs Geargetown.

Me too. Princeton hero was a year behind me in HS.

Was able to make my way down to floor level at some point. Iowa had the biggest group of white guys I had ever seen up close. And they all seemed blond.

It was also St. Patrick's Day so my memory might be a little foggy. But I do remember at one point throwing up on the streets of Providence. Way too much Guinness and not enough food.

Also at that game and also so disappointed that we didn't bother to hang around for the Princeton-Georgetown game. Thing I remember most -- aside from rallying from 16 down to tie it at 45-45 -- is the "R-U" chant midway through the second half of the South Carolina-North Carolina State game.

We had that kind of enthusiasm for a 15-12 regular-season team just six years removed from an NCAA bid and a 23-win season. Imagine how it's going to be the next time ...

To quote Klaus Von Bulow...

You have no idea (insert sinister laugh here).

I was at that game as well. What a great memory. We had Savage and Dadika as our 3 point shooters and a very intense defense with a quality press. BJ Armstrong lit us up that day with a bunch of 3 pointers of his own. That was a tough match up for Rutgers. My freshman year of college.

I was at the SW Louisiana game at Hartford. I was very happy that night with the win but it was pouring on the way home and I had an instant blowout when I hit a pot hole on the interstate in the pitch darkness in the pouring rain. I got drenched changing my tire and I did make it home. I returned on Sunday with a friend and Chris Mullin lit us up. We had John Battle and Brian Ellerbe as our 2 guards. We played a very good first half vs. The Johnnies but they out played us in the second half. I hope that I can stay healthy long enough to see another NCAA win.

Wow. Does anyone think Bob Wenzel here looks exactly like Steve Pikiel? At the 2:45 mark especially, and again at the 6:00 mark, the mannerisms even. Also, not only that, but that team came off of 3-straight +20-loss seasons, finished around .500 in the regular season, and then went and won the conference tournament and made it to the NCAAs?? Interesting .... ;)

I took a bus to Hartford for our last win. Hinson was injured or maybe we could have beaten the Johnnies. I remember we went to a zone in the 2nd half and we beat SW Louisiana.

Don't forget Rich Brunson. I also seem to recall that Hinson was bothered by a bad back.

My senior year. Sigh. Lacking any financial resources, we watched the game on TV. CBS cut away to another game (the old days), and by the time they came back, Iowa had blown it out. We thought good things were ahead, but aside from the 1991 season, we were wrong.

ESPN was covering the Iowa game but cut away to an overtime game involving the Evansville Purple Aces in their short sleeve shirt jerseys. It was a 2 point game when they switched and when they came back we were down by like 14. Sucked.

Thanks also for posting this--never saw it (was in HS and game I think was during school time, but admittedly I wasn't a fan then). Saw the final score but after watching it, thought we acquitted ourselves pretty well, coming back down from 16 in the first half due to ridiculous shooting by Armstrong to take a lead more than midway through the 2nd half...seems like we ran out of gas. The game in 1991 vs ASU was far more disappointing...

wow has the game changed. one thing that needs to come back...Craig Carter pull up shot. early in the game he has 1 guy to beat and was shocked to see him pull up and make a 6 foot shot. A lost art.

Did they really preempt the Guiding Light?

Great video, thanks. Wish they had the comeback in there.

Foul shooting hurt us then too I see.

It's Nigel Johnson's best shot. Unfortunately, he rarely takes it, probably because he's discouraged to. Jay Young said at the last Court Club meeting a two-point jumper is the worst shot to take in today's world of college basketball, according to the percentages.

not a 5 footer...2 point shot is better than an offensive foul too

Coach Young is correct when you look at points per possession because typically jumpers and pull up are done because there is defender there in box out position and offensive rebounding percentage is low

Nigel's go to jump shot is about 18 feet from the basket which is a terrible shot especially when you're fairly closely guarded. Craig Carter rarely shot from that far away. His range was about 15 feet and in.

On the flip side the rebounds typically are not longer it doesn't lead to as many transition opportunities for your opponents.

If you can hit the said shot at 65% or better it is a good one. Let's be very honest, how much boxing out do you see in college basketball.

No doubt 16-20 feet shots are bad....to the core I hate the 3 point rule for this reason.

If I had my way there would be no 3 point line and probably no shot clock. i suppose I'd be watching college basketball by myself.

Our last NCAA tournament was so long ago they were still running Lucky Strike ads.

Missed the comeback on this video. But thanks for this.
yeah.. TV went away from our game and came back.. just in time to see us get screwed a bit on the calls and no-calls.. but really strong game by Armstrong.

On that short pull-up jumper thing... you are just begging for their shot-blocker to come help on that... the closer in you go. What we need is a 3 point shooter.. 2 of them... one of which can really handle the ball.

my man Brian Ellerbe, I believe was the point in that one.

Think Rich Brunson was point guard on that squad and Ellerbe was the two. Switched to point the next year when Battle started/exploded at the two.
