This is going to be a very early test for our new, bright, but young, OC...
We are really, really strong and DEEP at WR and the tailback spots...and yet were are beyond thin at the FB and TE spots...
We want to run a traditional...Pro style offense.
But we just, not yet, don't have the depth and experience at the FB and TE spots to make that really go
We know Ralph really did not use Kroft and Burton in the passing game much in 2014....and we hear about Ben M wanting to use the tight end more...but no one is sure what we have in Arch and its thin behind it.
So...how do we use the those spots? How do we tinker the base I sets with lots of talent at the TB spot and WR spot and question marks at the FB and TE spot?
What I would really LOVE to see is the OC being FLEXIBLE to the strengths of our team...and
1.) run a lot less 2 WR sets with a FB and a TE...and run more 3 WR sets with either a single back and a tight end OR a single back and a FB. Spread out the teams more
2.) I think we can accomplish a better run game with wrinkling in a higher percentage of the run game with 3 WR sets...because I see the 2015 OL, though younger, as potentially a LOT more physical. Having those 5 guys and a FB/TE push against 6 in the box (with 3 WR sets)....would be potentially more productive than the 7 of 7 with a traditional eye formation (and a lot easier cheating that 8th up to the box).
3.) I would LOVE to see us get creative. Examples
-On base formations...line up Agolosi as a TE and split him out. Get him matched on a LB..or force teams to go nickel
-On base formations...love us to line up one of the tailbacks as the fullback and get them involved in the pass game (and lined up on a line backer in space)
-I would LOVE to even see Grant lined up as a RB in motion....and get him lined up in space against a LB in the flat or short zone from pre snap motion...
4.) I think a match up based creativity will allow whoever our QB is to get players the ball in space while he still is green. Let's be real. Eventually, other teams will get more film on us and adjust...but at the same time, our QBs are going to start to get experience and they will counter act each other. Staying creative and being ahead of it with some unexpected wrinkles will help the young QB get it going...
There are lots of things we can morph to...if we can be flex
Its going to be interesting to see how much freedom Coach Flood allows Ben M to tailor the offense to what we are strong at...and how much we stay with traditional offensive pro style while we were are inexperience at the FB, TE spots you need to be good at to run a traitionional pro style offense
Shoot away with thoughts...
