2016 Brackets

hah, I figured someone would beat me to an post about the brackets. I pasted the contents of the thread I started below. mods, please feel free to delete the other thread.

Brackets just came out. 6 out of the 10 wrestlers got seeds.

125: US McCabe v 16 Oliver IND
133: 16 Giraldo v US Kraisser CAMP
141: 4 Ashnault v US Husdon HOF
149: US Dippery v 16 Lugo EDIN
157: 9 Lewis v US Atkinson UVA
165: 7 Perrotti v US Przybysz APP
174: US Bakuckas v 6 Hammond CSUB
184: 15 Gravina v Ellingwood CMU
197: US Hrymack v 2 Cox MIZZ
285: 12 Smith v US Larson OU

Sorry Jar, hoping we go 8-2 in opening round and pull a few mild upsets (McCabe/DIppery)

Hrymack is up against it in the 1st round.
Half of our wrestlers will have tough second rounds against the #1 or #2 seed if they win.

As always, wrestlebacks will be key to AA and team scores.

If Guilbon continues his run......he can face Ashnault in quarters (Would have to defeat #5 seed and #12 Mecate).

Yea every B1G champion got either a #1 or 2 seed except for Ashnault who got a 4th seed. I really thought winning the B1G would have at least gotten him a top 3 seed.

Not sure how you can put Ashnault ahead of Jack or Mckenna.
I expected Micah Jordan to get a #5 seed and I am happy to see him fall to #6.

My guess is that it is because they were #1 or #2 seeds coming in to the B1G. Ashnault actually got a slight bump.

Ant is in a great spot. Seed means nothing.

Perrotti slipped to 7. I guess they counted those defaults in the B1G against him. I thought they usually looked past that stuff? All in all still a very good seed. I just would have liked to see Ashnault in the bottom bracket away from Heil.

He lost to Jack, so he would not have been above him. The Big title bumped him up to a 4. He has a very good draw.

Ash also didn't get a chance to wrestle either Thorn or Jordan in the Big 10s either. Even though he won, he didn't beat another Top 10 wrestler to try and make his resume better.

All things said, he has a pretty good draw. If he wants to take the Championship, he's going to have to beat guys like Heil, Jack, Jordan or McKenna.

Hudson frightens me a little for Ashnault. Hudson was beating Ashnault pretty easily until a huge 3rd period and a five point move at the end of the match.

Ash's 4 seed looks exactly right to me. the 3 ahead of him earned their higher seeds and just happened not to be in the Big Ten.

Perrotti looks OK at 7. It doesn't look like they counted his MFF and InjDef's against him. They also didn't assume he would have one any of the matches he didn't finish or start because of the injury. Perrotti didn't beat anyone seeded ahead of him and those 6 guys all have great resumes.

I'm a little disappointed in Smith's 12 seed. He has wins over 8 Wessell LEH and 9 Kroells MINN. Of course he also has 2 consecutive losses to Kroells at the B1Gs, which I think dropped him down. I don't see him getting by Coon in the 2nd rd but I think he can beat most guys in his bracket and if he can get on a roll in the consis can make the podium.

Hudson frightens me a little for Ashnault. Hudson was beating Ashnault pretty easily until a huge 3rd period and a five point move at the end of the match.

Anthony got a huge gash in his head the first 30 secs of match which affected him. Besides hudson's double he doesn't have much more. Don't get me wrong Hudson is dangerous but Ant is much better then last year. Hudson has been struggling.

Ashnault definitely has a tough 4 man initial group. Bleise NIU worries me the most. He beat Jack NCST and Kolodzik (grey shirt for Princeton) at Midlands. Gross SDSU is tough as well. Was RS at Iowa before getting booted off the team for some arrest.

125- Mccabe will have a hard time getting pass Oliver..if he does he goes to WB against Tomasello.

33- Giraldo should win his first match..then I don't see him beating Garret.

41- Bleise could be dangerous.. Hoping Mecate or Gullibon takes out #5 seed Manley as I haven't seen much of him. Glad we don't see Micah Jordan here.. I think Ashnault should make Semi's with a matchup against...Heil...but wait! Joey Ward has a chance to beat Heil again.. Hoping its Ashnault vs Joey Ward semis.

49- If Dippery gets passed Lugo then he has Retheford next..

57- I Think if Richie can get pass by Brascetta.. this will be close but i think it can be done.. then IMART in quarters...

65- Perrotti on a collision course with Isaac Jordan at quarters.. Isaac has had AP's number

74- Bak has the 6 then 11 seed.. It's going to be a tough road.

84- Gravina hits Brooks...Thats going to be real tough... but I'd give it a 15% chance for upset.. then Dudley or Nate Brown in quarters.

97- J'den Cox right off the bat for Hrymack..

Hwt- Coon in the second round for Billy..

Final thoughts- I think Ashnault has a decent shot at making semifinals.. I think he can beat Heil but has a better shot vs Joey Ward...f it I got Ashnault making the finals.. I have a hard time seeing anyone else making it pass the quarterfinals so we are going to have to become AA through the backside. Best chances being healthy AP, Richie Lewis, Billy Smith, Gravina, Giraldo.

Just go out there and wrestle like we did this past weekend. The atmosphere - and the biggest showing of RU fans in the history of this tournament - surely can help us overcome 1 or 2 "bad" seeds!!!

Just going by seeds, Rutgers is slated for a 4th, 7th, 2 R12, and 2 more 1st round wins. add in a smattering of wins in the consolations and some bonus points and the points come to around 30-35 and a top 20 finish. would be a great season, even without any upsets.

I think it should be a rule that, if possible, you can't wrestle a conference opponent until the 3rd round. McCabe's NCAA tournament is just wrestling conference guys he's likely used to. I mean, if a conference gets more than 8 in, there's nothing you can do, of course. I just like the excitement of wrestling somebody different.

I agree about separating conference opponents, but when one conference sends about 1/4 of the participants to a tournament it's going to be difficult to do. with D1 down to 70 some programs and many schools all trying to get a top notch strength of schedule, rematches in the NCAAs is going to be more and more likely. the upshot is the more guys wrestle the same people the more accurate the seeds will be.

Ashnault wrestled Hudson very early last year (i think it was the 1st D1 dual, before the Grapple at the Garden) and had a tough match. Hudson is a great athlete but he appears to have plateaued with regards to results, while Ashnault has steadily improved. Hudson's last match was a very one sided 8-0 loss to Randy Cruz of Lehigh at the EIWA's, who Ashnault beat convincingly 9-2 at the National Duals a few weeks earlier.

Jaroslav-(you would probably know this, but )pretty sure once the NCAA started seeding out to 16 is when they stopped the "not hitting a conference wrestler in the first round". I like this method better, seeding out to 16 does a better job of spreading out the talent than not hitting someone in your conference.

Read a pretty good article today that said Conaway and Gulibon got it pretty rough. I understand the seedings, but Taylor has the potential to blow up some brackets. I don't think Conaway can beat him.
