What do you think is more important - retaining Russo or Ash landing a handful of guys that may not have been likely to come with Flood as HC?

I have 0 expectation for him this year.

My expectations for the 2017 season will be based on the how the team performs in 2016

I would warn people not to overanalyse or have crazy expectations. Next Year may be worse than this year , but sometime you need to hit rock bottom before you can start rebuilding something new .

I think we will get kids from the mid west/texas/florida that arent rated but will end up being really good when they arrive.

I am guessing all these coaches have "hidden jems" in their mind which might have been backup options for the big schools.

I can't wait a day
I don't care what you say
Oh yeah, you got to pay
When you hit rock bottom
And you're there to stay

I think that our recruiting will reflect the background of the coaching staff. Meaning, that we will start getting a lot of recruits from the Midwest and the south. I am completely fine with that, by the way. So long as these are good players.

I think keeping Russo is more important at this stage. A quality QB like Russo is not easy to find, and he'd be here for four years so the program could turn around much quicker since that position is so important. Also, I'm sure Coach Ash could adapt his scheme to fit Russo.

I do not believe for a second next year will be worse than this year. The off season workout program is going to test the kids. I expect to see the kids faster, stronger and more confidant than they've been to date. If they want to work hard they will buy into Ash"s program quickly if not they will either not play or transfet

Kids were in position last year but just weren't able to make/finish plays.

If Ash can improve in this area, that's worth 1-2 wins on its own without even upgrading the talent level.

Disagree wholeheartedly with the first paragraph. Most of the time this wasn't true.

I want to see him make the players he has RIGHT NOW get better. I believe that development was one of the biggest concerns that we had.

Someone suggested that OSU defense became average after Bosa left, not sure I agree, but it is an interesting point. BUT, if Ash can make some of our guys better, than I think that will affect recruiting long term; which is the ultimate goal. He currently has some guys that could really benefit from good coaching; Hamilton, Turay, Joseph to mention a few. Ability is there, maybe not at OSU's level yet, but these guys, physically, can be a force. It's up to Ash to make them even better. I'm optimistic that we will see a vast difference in intensity generated from the staff.

I feel like Flood was able to be a calming influence when things turned sour, but felt he lacked passion to energize defense for a big stop, or momentum swing.

I expect he adds at least 2 new recruits that are promising (3 star). I loved Russo, but if he walks I can live with it (system change). Only recruit leaving that would wordy me is Jabbie

I have none. Pernetti hooked me into believing hiring Flood to keep a recruiting class together was the right thing to do. Bad decision. Should have sacrificed the recruiting class to hire the right person. I'm fine with this recruiting class being whatever it will be.

Went back and watched some of Russo's highlights from last year. And, saw him get plenty of snaps out of the shotgun. He looks better out of the shotgun, at least to me. He also has an excellent vision, arm, delivery and recognition skills. Hope he understands that regardless of the Offense, a QB with those attributes will always be a valued commodity in the NFL. He could set all kinds of passing records at Rutgers, I think/hope he gets that.

I agree, it's up to our staff to sell him on this. He seems like a smart kid, hopefully he'll recognize that READING the defense is most important, not the ability to run. He can be very successful right here!!

If Ash wants to get on the good side of the fans on this board quickly, he, at the minimum, has to get to the bowl with a 6-6 record nexct year. Anything less than that would mean that we did not hire well.

I don't want to hear the "R" word in rebuilding. We have been rebuilding since the first game we played.

You are not being realistic with our situation. Our depth has been annihilated at several positions. We can't get out of it overnight. 6-6 is an impressive job next year with this roster. If you are an opposing coach preparing to play Rutgers: Who scares you at WR? TE? QB? How about our back 7 on D. Who scares you? How about our kicking game? How will these positions match up with Penn State, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, MSU, OSU?

I have a little expectation for him this month, because he was so good at communicating his vision in each of the media appearances he's made that I can't imagine that not reaching recruits......even one or two who never would have considered Rutgers otherwise.

So far the best thing about him is that you sense absolutely zero b.s.

I could easily imagine him telling a top recruit, "hey, you can go to Oregon or Ohio State, where they might have facilities better than an NFL team, but that's not going to mean as much as being part of a program in which player development is the primary focus that controls everything else....and here is what I mean......"

I have zero expectations for this class. My opinion is that class will be what you see now plus two or three players that will not set the world on fire (like low 3 stars or maybe a NR or two star). Next year though, he must set the world on fire. If he has any chance at success in the next 3-4 years he needs a top 30-35 class. That is why I am concerned he hasn't hired someone that already has major relationships in NJ.

They should be able to sell Kelvin Harmon on the offense and on being a starter in 2017.

I'm also hearing good things about our chances with with KJ Gray.

Yes because all those 0-2 stars Flood recruit now will get significant playing time.

Got to give Ash years to fix this mess.
I don't believe that. There is plenty of talent on this team. Listen I don't expect to contend for a title but this team can easily win 6 games next year if properly coached.

I think he'll get 2-3 recruits that we didn't expect. Like possibly Kj Gray& Harmon.

He has to do well next recruiting class wise like a top 35 type class.

The great thing about Ash is that he has a lot of the energy and work ethic that Schiano had when he go to Rutgers. However, Schaino had to start from square one. Rutgers in 2016 is in materially better shape and it doesn't sound absurd to have high expectations over the next 4 years. As such, I think if he hits recruitng hard this month, he may really surprise to the upside. And if the doesn't, if he shows he can coach, I have big expectations for the 2017 class. It's hard not to be excited.

You should have expectations. I am sure HCCA has them. I expect that our class will finish more highly rated than it is today. Hopefully Russo stays but given the change he needs to re-evaluate do what is best for him.

I'll be happy if he keeps the remains of this years class together.

But I expect him to make his recruiting mark next year. If we have a ho hum 6-6 on the field record and a middling 2017 recruiting class? I will start to worry.

You have to give any new coach three years to get his own program established and backfill the pipeline with his recruits. Rutgers gave Flood four years. I will judge the success of this hire on the results of year four. By 2019 he should be firing on all cylinders.

That's fair, but if his recruiting class next year is lack luster then I'm not sure how much confidence we can have that the program is on the right track.
