Have the terms of RU's new 9 on field assistant coaches been released? I have not seen anything reported but I am highly interested in knowing how Coach Ash is spending the $2.75M allotted in his contract for his new staff. Almost all of the new assistant coaches 2014/2015 salaries are public information and I was interested to know what kind of raises they would be looking at. By my research, below are the approximate salaries from last season of the new Assistant Coaches (again this is all publicly available information on public University websites):

DL Coach Burnham (Iowa State) just over $200k
WR Coach Williams (Purdue) about 150k
Def Coordinator Niemann (Northern Illinois) just over $150k.
Off. Coordinator Mehringer (Houston) just over $100k
TE/ST Coach Okruch and DB Coach Busch - Quality Control coaches (Ohio State) (< $50k per Todderick article)
DB Asst. Henry (Arkansas Graduate Assistant) - I do not believe GAs are on salary
RB Coach Kuhr (James Madison) - Under $100k
OL Coach Blazek (Western Illinois) - Not public information, my guess, under $100k for a FCS non-coordinator

My guess is that the new coordinators double/triple their previous salary to $300k each
DL Coach Burnham and WR Coach Williams receive modest increases to $250 and $200k respectively
RB Coach Kuhr, OL Coach Blazek, ST Coach Okruch and DB Coach Busch triple/quadruple their salaries to $200k each
Asst DB Coach Henry goes from Grad Asst. to making $150k

This leaves Coach Ash another $750k to pay to support staff, incentive bonuses for assistant coaches and hold some in the cookie jar as goodwill with the Athletic department.

Either way, a majority of the assistant coaches stand to see very nice pay increases. Yet Head Coach Ash will make more than all 9 of his Asst. Coaches combined. I'm guessing this is common in most programs though.

Do you think RU is paying that low?

According to USA Today, last year RU paid 2 Coords $400k, 2 Assistants $300k, and 3 Assistants between $250-300k. Camp and Browning were the lowest paid at $200k. I would guess the last thing you want to do is nickel and dime assistants you want around for more than one year.

I wouldn't doubt a couple may be making south of $200k but if you truly believe you're building a B1G staff, you pay the like a B1G staff. Besides just with the increase in staffing budget there's room to hire 3 or so extra support personnel.

completely agree you don't want to nickel and dime assistants and also want to be competitive with the conference standards...however, just like corporate America, Coach Ash had a responsibility to his superiors in the athletic department to justify the pay increases of his staff, do you think Mehringer is going to go from making $100k as offensive coordinator at Houston after only one year, to $400-500k at Rutgers just because that is what other coordinators in the conference make, I'm willing to bet, without any research Mehringer may be the youngest inexperienced OC in the B1G this year and as such he will probably make less than almost all coordinators in the conference.

Perhaps Coach Akruch makes more as the seasoned vet on staff who was making over $200k at his stop prior to Ohio state I believe.

I'd be curious whether the $2.75mm staff budget includes Kenny Parker, the high school relations guy (Mantz), the assistant strength coaches, and the other new hires.

If i were Ash, I'd hold something back if I could get the guys i wanted for less than my budget so that I could 'reward' them and keep them around with raises in future years.

Mehringer was the WR coach at Houston, not OC and I never said $500k. The only assistant I know who ever made close to that was Fridge.

Whatever they get paid we'll find out eventually but I'm willing to bet it's close to the prior staff.

BTW, the lowest paid assistant in the B1G last year was former RU QB Ryan Cubit and his dad is the HC lol.

thank you for correcting me, you are correct Mehringer was not the OC at Houston. I believe typical coordinators in the B1G are in the $400k range but I doubt Mehringer gets bumped that high.

I agree with JMC, Ash could hold some back to reward assistants or put more money into the recruiting budget...more trips to recruit those Florida players.

Don't know for sure but by my rough calculations, Cole's salary was not included in the staff budget. The 9 assistants under Flood made approx. $2,6 mil.

Rossi $400k
McDaniels $400k
Gagliano $300k
Frasier $300k
N Wilson $280k
D Wilson $260k
Panagos $250k
Browning $200k
Camp $200k

Thank you knightfan for the above info.

Doesn't look like Barthel's salary was included either so I'm guessing Ash's $2.75M does NOT count his support staff like Mantz...

Mehringer is what, 28? Looking at a raise from $100k annually to $300-$400k annually? Talk about life changing...or Aaron Henry, going from an unpaid/stipend paid GA to making probably $200k, only a few years out of college.

There will be some nice raises for these guys, I just cannot fathom they combine to make nearly what the Flood Assistants were making last year...but I've been proven wrong before.

I think you were right previously about some asst's making less than $200k but not by much. I'd put Henry and Kuhr in that category.

My only point, and I admit I'm putting my own values into it, is Ash has talked about a 1st class, B1G staff. As best as I could tell, only 12 B1G assistants made less than $200k excluding PSU and NW who don't report salaries. I just think that perhaps that includes paying B1G worthy salaries here even if it's more than their experience merits.

As I said, we'll eventually find out and I'm prepared to have egg on my face. :sunglasses:

People get paid good money to work hard and put in the extra effort. They know Ash will hold them to the highest standards and if they succeed, they will be rewarded. Hopefully, they all get rewarded at Rutgers.

I don't expect, but would be thrilled, to see each Coach pan out and perform superbly. If RU was to be so blessed, then I don't want to see and don't expect to see Coach ASH nickel and dime them next year. Spend the MONEY .Get MORE and SPEND that too. We need to keep a great Staff coming back for as long as possible.

I feel like there has to be an element of the monetary issues plaguing the athletic department here, as if Ash was given a decent asst salary pool as a public relations angle but was highly recommended to not spend the full allotment as a show of good faith to the powers that be...I have no inside information at all just a hunch...if there wasn't so much talk recently about subsidies and not getting a full share of the B1G revenue pool I think the narrative is different, I'm just not going to be shocked to see a bunch of assistants being paid below their conference counterparts while still getting very nice pay increases and for some, their first taste of Power 5 conference football, which should be enough to keep them around a while.

If these salary numbers are anywhere near accurate, it is no wonder coaching staffs are on such a short W-L leash. Hell, if it were up to me, I'd fire the whole lot as soon as anyone left the toilet seat up.

College coaches don't deserve that kind of money. Is it any wonder that so many voters think our economy has become corrupted?

Aside from OC Mehringer quadrupling his previous salary my predictions were very close...how about Aaron Henry only a couple of years out of college getting paid like a highly recruited attorney just out of law school for a firm in NYC...amazing!
