Rutgers started its 2006 season with victories over North Carolina, Illinois, Ohio and Howard and received its first ranking since the end of the 1976 season. On September 24, 2006, they were ranked #23 in the AP and USA Today’s Coaches Poll. After a 34-0 win against Navy on October 14, they moved to #19 and Rutgers received their first Bowl Championship Series ranking coming in at #16 the next day.

RU was still running trips to games, the North Carolina game for example, aside from the bus trips...... a lot of RU fans stayed together at this
hotel in North Carolina....... having a few beverages at the bar, we found out the bartender was an RU grad....... never did get a bill at
the end of the evening.....

the one thing I will mention about that first game is it seemed the team just refused to lose.....when the game seemed to be slipping away
at the end, we just took it back.....

actually 10 years ago if the N.C. game was oct 2005....seems like yesterday

I remember that year, there were a few talking heads pushing for RU to go to the Sugar instead of ND against LSU. Sure enough, LSU clobbered ND 41-14 (I think, not sure) and gave ND its 9 straight CONSECUTIVE bowl loss. Talking heads said, Rutgers had one of the best defenses in the nation and would have given Jamarcus Russel fits had they been given the opportunity. Big East went 5-0 in bowl games that year.

Fun times.

I remember that. We should have been in that bowl instead of playing 6-6 Kansas State that didn't belong on the same field.
