The site of the first intercollegiate football game is known as College Field. It was Rutgers first football home from 1869-1890. But in its Rutgers football lifetime it was never called College Field. The newspapers of the time called the area "Bishop ground" owned by former Congressman James Bishop whose Bishop House still hosts Rutgers activities.
After its land donation to Rutgers by Trustee James Neilson in the 1920s, on May 16, 1927 it was formally dedicated as an athletic playground until several years later when it was needed to host the College Avenue Gymnasium.
