Iowa comes in with a 2-1 record. O.k. so do we. Their 2 wins were against #124th ranked Miami of Ohio and they win that game 45-21. Next they beat #126 ranked Iowa State 42-3. Then of coarse the loss to North Dakota St last week 23-21 (who is a very good D2 team as we know). All 3 games were played in Iowa City. So who is Iowa this year? They have not proven enough to me yet, at least to this point to say we should not have a punchers chance in this game. They go on the road for the first time this year, but with motivation and a chip on their shoulder after the loss. Statistic wise Iowa (Passing Yards- 208.7 per game) Ru (159), Iowa (Rushing yards- 148 per game) RU (229) and finally total yards. Iowa (356) and RU (388). Their defense is solid against the pass and weaker against the run. So why don't we have a chance here? We can't pass but the rush is our strength. The D is starting to play a bit better in my opinion, but we don't have the QB that can get it done! It's essential to come out playing in the 1st quarter.Iowa is still unproven, but we we also need to prove ourselves. Hope it's this Saturday! I say we cover the spread at least even with Laviano at the helm!

Iowa returned 13 starters, 8 on defense, from last year's 12-2 campaign, inlcuding a heartbreaking loss in the B1G Championship game and playing in the Rose Bowl.

Yes, the DL got pushed around inside the tackles in the 4th quarter against North Dakota State, however, they're big, physical and nasty up in the front 7. The LBers are studs, led by Josey Jewell, a lunch pail type of kid. Love the motor on redshirt freshman, Anthony Nelson on the edge. The CBs are top of the class with King, the Thorpe award winner and Greg Mabin.

What going to be difficult is playing a senior led QB, C.J. Beathard, who's tough to defend. Matt Vandeberg is off to a fast start and he's the guy, our defense needs to focus on. I also like Riley McCarron, another senior WR. Not a big kid, however, seems to get open a number of times during a game and will kill you. Beathard will pick us apart in the air, if we're sloppy in coverage.

This is going to be a real tough game to get a W.

Don't get me wrong, I respect The Hawkeyes and we have not established ourselves as some fearful team out there. I know what Iowa did last year and their expectations for this year, but have not really seen it this year yet. The pollsters must agree since they slipped to #30 in the AP from #13.

Was the loss to NDS bad, especially since they got pushed around up front in the 4th. Yeah. However, it's impossible to tell at this point and they have the entire BIG in-conference schedule ahead of them. Would not write them off. I could only hope one day Rutgers slips to #30 in the polls.

I'm with yea that it's impossible to tell yet. That was my main point of the post. Who is Iowa? We just don't know yet! They really have not played anybody except ND ST. and that was a loss at home. s*it happens!

I'm hoping for a game like we had against Michigan State last year, the result and closeness of the game still eludes me with our former coach at the helm.

If our players can bring the same enthusiasm and energy as they did against Michigan State, I'd sign up for that every week including this week's Iowa game. It seems like they save that game for a Saturday night once a year.

First, I'll be at the game Saturday and am really looking forward to the experience. Last Saturday's loss to the Bison has thrown us all for a loop. Iowa State pulls a rabbit out of a hat against us almost every year, and we beat them like a rented mule two weeks ago. That had us all believing that a win over NDSU would not be easy, but would happen. Maybe the players were thinking the same thing.

The new RU staff has unique knowledge of the Iowa program and will certainly have your guys jacked up and well prepared. If Iowa comes in sulking instead of pissed off, there's no reason you guys can't win. We were clearly deceived on the relative strength of this Iowa team, especially with the early interior line play. Ferentz teams usually get better as seasons progress, so that's the hope. We do have some very good players in spots, so it's the supporting crew that has to catch up.

In my opinion, the key for Iowa is to find a way to stuff the run on D, and to give CJ time to create and make plays on O. Poor run defense and stalled drives will give Rutgers an opportunity to win. Good luck Saturday.

It's all on the defense and special teams ; they must step up. Right now, the play of the defense is more disturbing than the play at QB. Iowa's fortunes may be the reverse of last year when they won so many close games; maybe the tide has turned and Rutgers will get fate's blessing.

ND St is the defending FCS champion, not a D2 which is one level below that. They've beaten the last 6 FBS opponents they've played.

I don't believe Iowa is the type of offense that blows you away with stats. They're more a disciplined, steady, ball control squad who last year depended as much on a stingy defense. They were #2 in the nation in turnover margin last year.

as recently as 2004 N Dakota St was division two

their resume since moving to Fcs is impressive - this is not a bad loss for a FBS team. They have beaten seven FBS teams, and hosted ESPN GameDay

from wikipedia

The Bison football team, which since 1993 played their home games at the Fargodome, was a dominant force in Division II. They have won 13 NCAA National titles. Eight were at the Division II level (1965, 1968, 1969, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, and 1990) before moving up to Division I-AA (now FCS) in 2004 where they have won five national championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015). NDSU is the only team at any level of NCAA football to have won five straight national championships. The program was the winningest in the history of the NCAA Division II North Central Conference, with 17 outright championships and 27 total league football titles. The program has also been quite successful since moving up to the D1 FCS classification. In 2006 the Bison posted a 10–1 record that included a win over FBS Ball State. During a 2006 game against FBS Minnesota, NDSU led for much of the game, but a last-second field goal attempt was blocked by Minnesota, resulting in a 10–9 loss. The following season, the Bison won their first Great West Football Conference championship and achieved the number 1 ranking in major FCS polls for a majority of the season. During this season the 2007 Bison football team defeated FBS members Central Michigan University and the University of Minnesota. In 2010 the Bison defeated the FBS Kansas Jayhawks, 6–3, for their first win over a Big 12 program. The Bison won the 2011 FCS national championship, defeating Sam Houston State University, 17-6. The 2011 title was their ninth overall. The Bison returned to the FCS championship game in 2012 and soundly defeated Sam Houston State University in a rematch of the 2011 title game, 39–13. Expectations were high entering the 2013 season. The season commenced with a game against the Kansas State Wildcats, the reigning Big 12 Champions. The Bison took a quick lead, but let a 7-7 halftime score get away from them; trailing 21-7 in the third quarter. The Bison finished the game with an 18-play 80-yard drive that used 8 1/2 minutes, leaving 28 seconds on the clock for the Wildcats, trailing by 3. NDSU Linebacker Grant Olson intercepted the first pass attempt by the Wildcats, sealing their 7th win over FBS teams since their move to FCS. ESPN College GameDay broadcast an episode from Fargo. The Bison finished the season 15–0 with a victory over the Towson Tigers, 35–7. Despite a cast of new coaches, the 2014 Bison finished the season with a 15–1 record, including another win over Big 12 Iowa State and won their fourth consecutive national championship. ESPN College GameDay was broadcast from Fargo for the 2nd consecutive year.

I glazed past that earlier but that might make a bigger difference than I thought.

Sorry about the miss information on ND. ST., but they are still a step below us and I would be concerned about a contending BIG team losing to them at home. My main point was that Iowa is unproven up to this point!

Didn't they have Michigan the next week. They played well enough to win and saved something, maybe? Hopefully, we saved something for Iowa, but if we did, I am not sure what it might be unless Lav comes out smoking them

And that is a fair question at this point.

Let's hope whatever they are, that the don't get better till October.

First of all, thanks for coming to our board Hawkimatt! I always enjoy a hometown perspective of the opposing team. I was rooting for you guys to win it all last year. It would have been a nice change. You have come a long way and I know expectations are high after last year. My original post was not ment to be condescending towards the Hawkeyes at all, but rather that every team has to prove themselves every year and can't live off the past. I hope you have a great time with your visit to Piscataway! Good Luck and enjoy your stay!

Hawk, if anyone asks if you if you want taylor ham or pork roll just say yes but do not tell them which one you like better..☺

No offense taken at all. You're exactly right about this team not having proven anything. It's a new year and a new team. At this early stage, I don't really know how good any team is, least of all my Hawks. Despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth in these parts, we have good talent an a very good, stable coaching staff. I'll reiterate here what I've said before; Ash and his staff have certainly had this game circled as one where they can make a statement and lay the foundation for future success. This is just a critical a game for Iowa if they want to have any chance to defend their B1G West title and get back to Indy. If they slip again, I don't see how they can regain the confidence needed to compete with Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State or Nebraska down the stretch. Hell, a Hawkeye team in a funk could easily lose at Illinois or Purdue. I've seen it all in my 45 years of fandom.

Well, you are a great fan for your team and are a class act. You tell it like it is, which I try to do also and we need more of that around here. Hope we beat the hell out of you this week, but good luck the rest of the way!

Matt, looking at the ESPN QB ratings for the B1G, our QB is at the bottom, but Iowa's is near the bottom too. What's the deal with your QB so far this year? Positives and negatives. . . .

I think that CJ is one of the most complete QBs in the country. He's a playmaker, has good mobility, quick release, and sees the field well. We don't have 5-star talent at receiver, but it's a reliable group. Getting open deep has been a problem, which has made us easier to defend. Last week we killed ourselves with dropped balls, which didn't happen the first two weeks. Our patchwork OL has not done an adequate job of keeping good pass rushers off of him. Hoping that changes when we get a couple of guys back off of injury this week. Weak blocking was the sole reason he gave up the pick six last week...hit in his throwing motion. Anyway, all of that has made our overall offensive stats look underwhelming, but CJ is not the problem. He's one of the best we've ever had.

Blitz, the feeling is mutual...I hope we beat the hell out of you, too! :-)

Wow, our teams sound very similar. Our OL has done OK. But if you have read our boards, you may have noticed we have a QB problem. . . . .Hoping for a great game and a Rutgers win!

Well I sure hope you would want that! If you didn't, there would be something wrong. Good Luck Saturday!
