Absolutely Gut Wrenching Loss

I am completely devastated.

That play on 3rd and 9 from Michigan State's own 20 yard line is going to give me a nightmare tonight. Cook threw a legit perfect ball and their receiver made a legit perfect catch. Our defender Hunt player EXCEPTIONAL defense and was right there. Of course, if he had been perfect he would've gotten his hand up to break up the pass, but honestly if you watch the replay the wide receiver did a great job of not "raising his hands" to make the catch until the last second. Because of that, no cornerback would have been able to get his hand up in time.

If that play doesn't happen then MSU has to punt and we get the ball on our own 40 or 50 yard line with 4 minutes or so left in the game with the score tied 24-24. I know you can't play the "What if?" games because there are so many in a game, but boy was that play an absolutely pivotal play.

Hats off to the Rutgers boys because they absolutely played THEIR HEARTS OUT! They literally gave the fans everything they had and the fans were giving the players everything they had. We really needed this win, but even still, at least now our team and our fans know that we can flat out PLAY! While a win would have been a special chapter in the Rutgers BLACKOUT story, this game is still a smaller win and I am sure proud of the program and the personnel who were a part of it tonight! Let's go RU!

Not gut wrenching at all. Not even in the same STRATOSPHERE as PSU 2014, Louisville 2012, WVU 2011, WVU 2006, Cincinnati 2006, Cincinnati 2008, WVU 2008.

We were tied with the #4 team in the country with 4min left to play in the 4th quarter. I didn't expect us to win because when it comes down to it, we just don't have the horses at QB to take down the #4 team unless a LOT of things break our way. I was pleased with our performance on O and D for the most part. STs did not play well including kick coverage.

Well sorry to hear that. When Michigan State completed that 3rd and 9 at the end of the game I literally was on the floor. I knew that was most likely the game right there and I just felt sick to my stomach for the players and coaches.

This loss hurt, no doubt. I didn't expect us to play them close the whole way - no chance! RU surprised me and definitely could have won just as easily as they lost. Would have been a great win. But agree with the other poster who talked about other losses being more painful (PSU '14, 'Ville '12, etc..) because we were never supposed to even be in this game. Kudos to our boys for stepping up.

everybody will key on that 3rd and 9 for a long time...

this game was in no way as painful as the triple OT WV game, or the Louisville game for the Orange bowl...

it does sting, but I felt very good about the effort, improved play...and we put a good show on for recruits

It was a good game. Under the circumstances a loss has its silver linings.

This is about where we were in section121 as well.

A true RU fan isn't devastated by anything. Been there, done that. This was a very Rutgers way to lose - taking a sack and spiking a 4th down play.

I am taking this loss a LOT harder than WSU. This is the kind of win teams can build programs around.

And unlike many of you I'm not interested in making a coaching change . I don't want to start over . If he needs to go then so be it. But I don't think we are that far off from being a good team . I have ZERO interest in Us Hiring one of those MAC coaches which is what we'll end up with.

Tough tough evening and morning for me today

Agree Patrick, do not want a MAC coach . need a stud lineman like Pridgeon.

We have only seen one horse at QB so don't say we don't have the horses to take down the # 4 team.

I'm encouraged by this game. A loss is a loss and obviously you want to see them get that last Hail Mary off properly, but they came to play across the board.

It was tough, engaged, hard fought physical football. MSU wr's were incredible all night. They made lots of contested catches. Sometimes you just tip your hat. This is one.

Night and day from last year against this team.

Let's see how they react to the number 1 coming in.

Flood needs 2 more years! We r closing the gap and will pop an upset soon.

The gap will widen next year when Carroo is gone.

This is a bad loss. Purdue lost to MSU by 3 last week so no moral victories here by Rutgers for keeping this game competitive. Have to win these games when the opposition is not a full strength in your stadium. The MSU final drive just proves that Rutgers has not had a defense to close games for years.

The writing is on the wall for this season.

This is nothing like WVU 06 or 11 Ville 12 where we had a really good team. This was a not so great team taking a mediocre team to the wire. We outpeformed expectations because they were very low to begin with.

At the end of the day the 4th down spike was just more evidence of how over its head the staff is for our fans, but we also at least showed the conference we are not a pushover and recruits that we should contend for them. That is what I took. This was not to clinch anything- I am still not confident in getting near 6 wins.

I agree with this assessment.

Talk about a glass-completely-empty guy.

We have almost our entire 1 and 2 deeps returning next year. I can't wait to see that defensive line, particularly with Hamilton back.

I do agree with you that Carroo will be a big loss.

This is looking like a 4 win team. Win against Army and perhaps a split between Maryland and Indy. Flood has to go.

It was a great well-coached game. The question is whether we will build on it. Next week is a huge game, if we beat Indiana in Indiana, then we may be on to something. If we lay an egg, then I believe this will be a lost season. We also don't really know how good MSU is given the number of injuries they have. They have not once covered the spread this year and beating Purdue by 3 (a team Minnesota trounced) and then playing RU nose to nose does not lean toward them being a top 5 team. That said, whether MSU is a top 5 team I guess is irrelevant. Next week will be critical for RU. Indiana is a pretty good team and a win just might propel us to a 6 win season. At the end of the day, I just want to continue to see aggressive hard nosed football. I loved watching the attacking D yesterday and hope that now becomes the norm and not the exception.

Same here. I actually changed the channel at half-time to watch a movie and didn't find out the final score until Sunday morning. I didn't think RU would have kept the score respectable.

How dare you change that channel... we were WINNING at halftime!

Sounds like a look at me post.

Total losers wouldn't even make that move.

Hmm yeah I didn't even think about that. I agree that it doesn't really make any sense that the poster would change the channel and watch a movie at that point.

Another anonymous on-line tough guy....You're a loser...

Everyone has their priorities, and for me watching a movie with my family takes priority over watching a college football game that my family won't watch!!

Go buy another tv.

Yeah, if you changed the channel at halftime of a game where YOUR Scarlet Knights were leading the #4 team in the country, you are what is know as a casual fan....very, very casual.
