Obviously college football is on from Noon to 2AM with 4 games today on ESPN, but the B1G takes over ESPN2 today, starting in the afternoon.....

3PM ET....Northwestern at Penn State......Wildcats are favored on the road here over State Penn....probably the most interesting of the games today, both Penn State and NWestern are the 2 home games for RU in next week or two.....how RU plays in both of these games against these two opponents, goes a lot way towards setting a tone for Year one in the conference for RU.

5PM........Illinois at Maryland.....both teams are red hot right now......Maryland slight home favorite here....I think Illinois really needs a statement win on the road in conference.....

7PM........Rutgers at Wisconsin.....obvious game of interest in tri-state area today here......Rutgers off a loss, on road again, vs an elite, well coached/disciplined Badgers team at Kohl's Center.....Nigel Hayes and Koenig take and make tough shots for Badgers.....how does Wisconsin approach a game as heavy favorite and a team they will see at MSG in another month.

9PM ET.....Michigan State at Minnesota.......Gophers are solid favorites today and Sparty, even in their best years, struggles at Williams arena.... sometimes when you get a team on your schedule matters the most, MSU is not healthy and sorting out their roster...not a vintage Izzo team, Minnesota should take advantage here.

All of these games have some interest to me, I've seen a couple of these teams earlier in the year, but as we get into conference play, scouting reports and preparation usually "take away", what a team likes to do best...players forced out of their comfort zones and other secondary players stepping up to become prime time difference makers.

Maryland loses if their big man Dodd is out...they are relying too much on those freshman, and teams will switch to zone vs Trimble when he starts to get in lane (which he will)

great time of year...conference play begins. I will be watching these games over the bowls

Big test for Northwestern as its the typical trap game opening on the road against a wobbly and mediocre Penn State. I would like to see Nwstern come in and slice and dice them but it will probably be a close game and its a game the Cats MUST have if they are to make that first NCAA push. I like them in a close one 70-65

Illinois is much deeper, healthier and better than last year. How good they are we will not know until they start getting into league play. Maryland has been shaky at times yet continue to win. If this was at Illinois, I think the Terps would be in trouble but I think at home and the fact that they simply know how to win in end games I will go with them 77-71

Unfortunately the least competitive game will be the RU-Wisconsin game, not a good matchup for RU who will try to push the tempo to avoid having to play in the half court offense, Unfortunately when you do that against a team like Wisconsin they really can make you pay for that. Badgers 69-55 as RU's offense gets stifled.

I am a believer in Minnesota thus far, they have beaten some solid teams and remember they were very close in their losses last year to top tier Big 10 schools, they were much closer to the middle of the pack than Rutgers last year and I think this is a game their fans should be jacked for as they can take advantage of a troubled Michigan State early in the season. For State they are looking to just get their bearings on and steal a win. I like the Gophers 82-76

Penn State getting whacked early by Northwestern 32-16....Lions are baaaaaaad
Per Sagarin, the Lions are 12 slots above us. And have played a significantly more difficult schedule as a part of that rating. Sounds like you like our chances hosting the Lions. We will not have to wait long for that outcome. And also compare our team's guard play with that of George Mason's Otis Livingston against the Lions.

Penn State getting whacked early by Northwestern 32-16....Lions are baaaaaaad
Penn State shoots the ball within 10 seconds which means Rutgers must get back on defense after missed shots. They are a dribble drive team constantly taking the ball to the basket .Rutgers should have a excellent chance to win both games against Penn State if they can score at least 65 points.

Northwestern on the other hand will be a difficult matchup because they have very good 3 point shooters ,a star player in Lindsay scoring 31 points , a team that probably will win 20 games for 2 consecutive seasons and finally get a NCAA bid because of quality out of conference wins.

Hard to determine what teams will do night to night.....PSU blitzed St John's last week, so they are capable of better than what they did show today....

NWestern is very much a threat for a bid, if they get their injured guy or two back....RU having two games with NW, PSU, MD and Iowa looks very fair after looking at the rest of the league....

good one in Minnesota, Gophers were up double digits by Sparty is now within 5 with under 8 left. One thing in watching this game is the size and athleticism both teams possess that RU just does not have. We have some athleties but we are smaller in height and muscle

Maryland 84 Illinois 59...I think the Terps answered any questions heading into Big 10 play
Bac, I agree tonite Maryland looked for real. But I have seen them 3-4 times this year and I am not sold on them. Their scouting report was excellent and they made things difficult for Hill and their guards blew by Illinois all night long. Plus Illinois shot atrociously especially their guards. Let's see Maryland on the road before we anoint them to the top of the league

What a bigtime bubble battle on opening night....Michigan State wins by 1...big win for them...young but talented....crushing loss for Minnesota for their NcAA push. Both teams look better than Rutgers
