An On The Banks article on the QB recruits.

Spank, I think it's as much the belief that Russo won't bring top kids with him as the other 2 probably would as it is who's got talent.

For all we know he could turn out to be a better QB but he doesn't have the star appeal or is as "sexy" as most here were looking for.

Well, for "sexy" perhaps we should leave that to their girlfriends......

I agree with what you're saying, although I think the exposure the other two got (and maybe coupled with their personalities - not knowing any of them I can't say) is what accounts for the "star" appeal. As for what some folks are calling the "pied piper" effect, I think that's overrated. Yes, that may play a factor in swinging a couple of kids, but it's not going to fill out the recruiting class.

This brings up some interesting points.

Anthony Russo is Nobody's Consolation Prize

1.Haskins didn't play for a New Jersey team. He's a Maryland kid, not a Jersey kid.
2.Russo has offers from Temple and UConn. If we can't beat out that dynamic duo for a player, we should give up
3. I guess it comes from being a long-time fan of Rutgers football, but these type of losses don't really bother me that much. You get used to the disappointments. Rutgers has never done very well with the best high school players in New Jersey. I keep waiting for that to change but it hasn't really improved all that much. Maybe next year.

I look at the Russo article as a feel good one that OTB put out and appreciate the effort.
But , like you seem to be, not swayed by that article into thinking he should be considered the same type of talent as the ones that got away.
Russo might prove to be just as good or better then the other two, but at this point, the other two are ranked higher and that is what counts.

The prose is a bit florid, as is typical for the OTB blogs, but everything he says is absolutely correct - with one possible error. My understanding is that Russo's offer wasn't "committable" until his visit on Thursday. Could be mistaken, but this is what I was told.

I would still rather have Haskins, but I honestly think Russo is a better qb than JG. Even before this article I thought that.

JG had a lot of hype starting from before his freshman year which may have blew him up larger than he was. I can't lie I was always a tad bit skeptical of his limited production and decision making. The kid needs work. His pedigree and his ability to possibly secure local stud recruits trumped all of that obviously.

But from a strictly football standpoint the two are comparable in skill level. Russo is no joke. He plays some very pretty stiff competition and runs the pro style like a damn maestro. Pinpoint accurate and makes very good decisions rapidly... decent arm strength. I was thoroughly impressed after watching his last tape a while back. Would not be surprised of his ratings increase during his senior season a la Resigno.

Many people will view the article as a "cheer up its not so bad" article but there are facts that many close to RU recruiting have discovered a long time ago. Truth is we would be very lucky to have him. More than casual people would think.

I saw JG last year and wasn't impressed. I'm bummed that we didn't get him b/c he would have brought Jersey guys with him. But overall, he's a bit overrated.

I strongly feel that we need to embark on a collective campaign to disabuse everyone of the notion that Jarrett Guarantano (or anyone) is/was going to lead a parade of blue chip recruits to our doorstep.

It doesn't happen. Come February, all of these kids go where they go. They scatter to the wind, the outcome of highly individualized decision-making processes.

We lost nothing when Guarantano committed to Tennessee.

AGREE - have to remember that each one of these guys - deep down inside (and for some - on the surface too) truly believes that they are the straw that stirs the drink - and - they will go to the place that they think is best for them - it might make for great buddy-talk to say 'yeah lets be a big package deal' but in reality they are not going to make any decision - except for the one that they think is optimal for them.

Ummmm, what?

Until JG proves himself at the College level, speaking of him as a player, Real is right.
What was lost : the ego trip of getting a top rated QB to commit.

I see the spin machine is in full motion on a lazy weekend

Well, since you have no concrete arguments to the contrary, I guess it's safe to say that the Mom's Basement LoBro Machine is in full motion, as well.

I don't do this a lot, but in your case I'll make an exception. I'm no genius, but I'd wager I've got about 60 IQ points on you. You haven't ever - not once - been able to articulate a cogent, well-informed argument on any topic in the history of this board. You might want to stick to the things you know. Since there's no snow on my driveway, maybe you could just tell me what kind of grass seed to use for compacted, poor-draining soil.

Agree....case in point: Haskins and WR Diggs. Haskins to MD, but Diggs has Alabama as his leader. That might change, but, Diggs could go to football crazy Alabama. Time will tell.

Sort of agree with alot of people here. I would like to see some more of Russo this year in the camps and his senior year before I say he anywhere close to JG or DH.

Spin by the writer.

Russo is about the 5th best player on his high school team.

Stats don't lie. 21 TD's, 2 INT's for the top state team in the toughest level of competition.

played on a Pro style run first offense. That means he knows how to play under center and knows how to run play action passes.

Not to nit pick, but Archbishop Wood is in 3 A, a drop off in size and talent from 4A in Pa. Like comparing the Bosco's, PC, BC to our smaller parochials . I think he is a great fit for RU.

Yet you have no argument except your general nasty schtick of yelling the loudest which still won't make your penis size grow

I didn't know you had an issue with the size of my dick. Your mom certainly doesn't.

That bit out of the way, the rest of your post is crap. I make plenty of great arguments here. As I said, you make none. You complain, period. It's all you ever do. And frankly, you're not that knowledgeable about either football or recruiting - especially the latter. All of your positions come directly from your hatred of the status quo - which, I would point out, you do nothing (other than bitching) to change, since your donation level isn't very impressive.

All in all, you're pretty much the ringleader of the crowd that bitches endlessly but does nothing about it. 77,000 posts worth of bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch. You're basically a girl.

Roasted. Everything was great except the mom part. Little lame so I deduct 1 point. Otherwise spot on

I'll take the deduction, because it's fair. I was, admittedly, going for the cheap gag. We'll work on that, and get back to you.

OK. But will we get any of NJ's top recruits....or four and five stars from anywhere?

The Haskins case is way more troubling. I tend to believe that there was some flim flam, let's say, in relation to Guarantano. But Haskins is from our backyard and shunned for a team with the same record who we beat with a more apathetic football fan base and similar sized stadium and an HC that many seem to really hate. He had ties to current and former players.

The problem is these cases cannot be viewed in isolation. Ever since the 2014 class imploded, we have been spinning our wheels, getting few top players, getting shunned for Cuse and Temple....it just does not say to fans or recruits or anyone that we are angling for championships.

NotR,

I'm with you for the most part. I think the folks at MD were in his ear regarding the facilities and Kevin Plank money coming in and he ultimately went in that direction. RU and MD have alot of similarities but a quality recruit with the connections to RU that Haskins has deciding not to come to RU is dissappointing.

GO RU

from the article, read it to find who is who:

OK folks, it is blind "taste-test" time.

Given three QB junior-year statistic lines, tell me who is the highest rated prospect.

Player A: 70/124 (56.5%), 139 ypg, 21 TDs vs 2 INTs, 124 QBR
Team Record in 2014: 14-1, State Champ, poll: 1st in state.

Player B: 159/259 (61.4%), 193.6 ypg, 22 TDs vs 5 INTs, 105 QBR
Team record in 2014: 9-1, poll: 14th best in state.
Player C: 88/153 (57.5%), 93.6 ypg, 9 TDs v. 9 INTs, 73.2 QBR
Team record in 2014: 8-3, poll: 6th best in state.

*all statistics from MaxPreps

I know nothing about evaluating QBs but Russo's highlight film looked pretty good. The kid does seem to go through his progressions even in the face of pressure which is something Nova really struggled with. Seemed to have enough accuracy and arm strength (of course it is a highlight film). What I really liked is that he has great ball fakes and really sells the play action which is a staple of our offense. Teal worked on this before his senior year and it really payed dividends. Also helped Ray Lucas. It's a lost art. Also his throwing motion seemed better than Haskins who has that hitch and sling like Vick had. Maryland will have to change that or make sure he's got great protection.
