Basketball Another B1G sellout, this time it's Iowa

Great. Not an easy thing to do with our seating. Those seats up in 300 corners are lousey.

I would bet we'd avg 1k more fans per game if we had a legit sec 118 end court and you had those lower corner sections like most arenas do.

What is amazing compared to past seasons is that Rutgers remains a bottom tier basketball program yet sellouts are occurring.Pikiell clearly has positive perception and fans like watching the team play.

I've been in much worse. Upper corners of Carrier Dome. Most of the upper tier of the Hartford arena. Most any place where the hoops court sits atop a hockey rink.

The mid-low 200s corners are worse. We need to remove those pillars and go to wrap-around seating with an externally supported roof.

I don't mind them so much, but corners would be the desired seating. How that would get done (don't think it ever would).

For the most part, the students have come out tremendously this year.

Best of Luck,

LOL - NO, they haven't...that's how BAD things have been the past decade, when you think what you're currently seeing at the RAC are "tremendous" student turnouts. I'd be willing to guess that - MAYBE - we've hit 500 students once this season. Let's talk when we start PACKING all 3 sections there and fill up the 300's again!

Agreed. And when you look at our enrollment, it's insane we're not packed every game.

You are wrong once again. In fact, you are proving that you have not been to many games this year.

..and the #’s still PALE in comparison to past eras. NOT judging, we’ve sucked forever, I get it.

No idea what the #s were but the student turnout vs. Michigan was slightly disappointing for a top 6 team in town. Late arriving for an 8pm game and probably only filled 90% of the section.

Indiana was a pretty poor turnout but I’ll let them slide as it was about 10 degrees out.

I’ve been supportive of the students over the years for how bad we’ve been. They tended to show up for the big games. I honestly think our terrible football team has had an impact on overall morale.

They need to tune things up next year.

Nobody else disagrees with me.
I do. Mainly because what do you expect given our poor performance over the years? That said, I think the numbers are better than you estimate them to be. Also, you late 80s early 90s guys overestimate your crowd significance. It was better in the late 70s and early 80s.

Griz...

The student section turnout has been weak...maybe better than the last five years ...

The students in 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 took almost 3000 season student tickets ...

We are lucky to have 1/2 of that nights via walk up

MAYBE better than the last 5 years? Much, much better. For many games it has been real good. I don't know what our fans expect after having been so bad for so many years. I am not comparing it to 20 years ago or 40 years ago. I am talking about how for the most part the student sections have been pretty full this year in men's basketball.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Pete - I’ve feen going to games at THE RAC since it opened, See Shack’s post!

I dont think the students have been good at all this year. Its almost as if they are unaware of this teams record and improvement

a concerted effort is needed by the athletic department to get the word out to students for this game Saturday, has to be juice in the building from the get go which has been sorely lacking

If you were really at the games, you would have known that the students have come out for most of them.

NOT in the #’s you’re assuming, Truet me I know all about inflating #’s there and how many students were actually in the stands when things turned after 91’ish....I worked there lol! We REGULARLY put 3000+ for big games prior (The three sections of student season tickets behind the bench, the three where the student section is, and packing the 300 level on the bench side as well).

in 1989-90 we were 18-17 yet the student sections were full and then overflowing in 300s, true off of one NCAA season but the team was somewhat disappointing that year in level of play....getting full student and overflow for horrific St Bonaventure teams. This years students simply need to do better...there are 35K students at the school..

I know that the AD hypes up football for students but what is the deal with hoops...any students on the board want to chime in..do we have any students that post here anymore..sigh

The RAC was built in 1977? what's the lifespan of that steel girder roof? (at least is is likely US Steel) Last time that I was high up in the 300s I could clearly see they had multiple leak issues. I'd hate to see them replace the roof with the pillars still there.

For shi+s and giggles recently, I perused the RU media guide to check out some attendance figures. Here are the top five years for average attendance at the RAC:

1. 7,526.....1998-99.....12-5
2. 7,188.....1999-00.......8-5
3. 7,118.....1990-91.....11-2
4. 6,809.....2004-05.......7-8
5. 6,722.....1989-90.....12-4

Yes. I was there too. Every game? I agree that more students should come out, but comparing the two eras is apples and oranges.
