How Pete Carroll's rugby-style tackle is changing college football
A new form of tackling -- the rugby-style Hawk Tackle -- is all the rage at Ohio State and could spread across the country. Oklahoma, Nebraska and others are hoping to learn more about it.

This is a very significant upgrade. Our problem with missed tackles has been a pet peeve of mine recently. Let's hope the players wholeheartedly buy in.

[EDIT: this was in the OP linked story... I doubt the system was called "bite it"...

“The way we used to tackle was a real ‘bite the ball’ system,” said standout senior defensive tackle Darius Hamilton, referring to a style in which defensive players were encouraged to go after a ballcarrier by getting their helmet on the football.]

I forget what Hamilton called the old way in a recent article.. but it was get head in front and put hat on the ball in an effort to cause fumbles. Worked 2 years ago, didn't work last year. Was it not coached properly? Did talent level drop? Was it the loss of the DBs that decimated the D? Who knows?

New year, new coaches, new tackle focus, renewed hunger.. I like our chances to see vast improvements.

I would just love to see a swarming D where many people get to the ball on most downs. That would mean a smart motivated D that is coached well, prepared for games, read plays well and hustle. If a talent differential means that kind of D still gets beat, I don't care.. I can root for those guys every down.

Yes, turnover differential used to be a real positive for us, but going after the ball is high risk high reward. Last year it didn't work.

Don't forget that last year we lost a lot of starters in the secondary right as camp opened, and we never really recovered. Hopefully those problems are behind us.

I seem to remember (I could be wrong) that under Schiano we we had a terrific turnover advantage. Did he teach the "head on the ball" method? that KF did? Was it different? What's he teaching at OSU?

Seems to make sense at least for safety purposes. We were always told to "get your head in there!" meaning in front of the runner. Made a tackle like this in practice once and my head hurt for hours afterwards.

Agree with previous posters, whatever method used get this damn tackling problem fixed!
