Arenas on Duke paying players

I sure hope your right although I doubt it.The NCAA always goes after lesser programs to make their point and let the blue bloods escape or get a slap on the wrist case in point North Carolina .

Well, not always. The NCAA hit Kentucky pretty hard in the late 80s.

Not hard enough because they came right back and are actively cheating today and the last two decades.

The only school NCAA appropriately punished was SMU. That is the level of punishment that should be for cheating. You get blown up and you don't come back. And any coaches involved get a life time ban. Its really that easy, this isn't like some guys are tip toeing the lines here, we have dozens of teams, hundreds of coaches who are blatantly cheating with multiple offenses that are so far beyond the rules.

while i agree, they are getting $$$, Arenas LOATHES duke
He did drop a turd in the natty against them, but claims he could (at NBA time) drop 80+ on them in Cameron

"He'd like to see what I'm going to do against Duke," Arenas wrote in a posting this week on his nba.com blog. "I thought it was funny because if I have the chance to go back to college, I'll give up one NBA season to play against Duke.

"One college game that's five fouls, right? ... 40-minute game at Duke, they got soft rims I'd probably score 84 or 85. I wouldn't pass the ball. I wouldn't even think about passing it. It would be like a NBA Live or an NBA 2K7 game, you just shoot with one person," he wrote.

It took 3 seasons for Kentucky to be "back." NCAA said they weren't going to do to another program what they did to SMU football. Plus SMU decided to shut its program down the 2nd year IIRC.

If Kentucky is still cheating they are really good at hiding the evidence. Which is a crucial part of cheating.

This is why it's hard to crack the blue blood level, but for a program like Rutgers there is no reason we can't get high 3 stars and 4 stars and coach them up on a consistent basis and become a consistent NCAA team. We now have the practice facilities in place, and as we continue to win and get to the tournament, money will be spent on revamping the RAC.

The key now, is to keep someone like Pikiell around and make this a consistent winning program which we all have hungered for for the last several decades.

How many "high level" 3 stars and 4 and 5 star players are there in a given year?

How many major schools can say they make the tournament at least every 3rd year?

How many of those schools have buildings that are packed and local media presence that makes their program very relevant?

The practice facility certainly doesn't hurt. It is very important. There are still quite a few more obstacles for us to overcome.

Put yourself in the shoes of a parent of a HS junior. I'd think Rutgers is a destination after "more attractive" schools lost or had tepid interest.

One of my buds is a documentary film maker. He has one in production now about this issue. There is no question that Duke has a very refined, complex web to compensate players and their families. Zion's Mom seemed to be living quite the life in Durham.

I like how Duke tried to get ahead of this doing in investigation as to whether Nike compensated Zion, and found no wrong doing. As if they'd be stupid enough to pay him directly.

Shell corps have been set up and funds transferred. I believe it will all come out. Of course, with the athletes about to get paid legally, this will likely be a moot point.

If athletes are to get paid legally all but 20-30 schools are finished.

Unintended consequences will hurt so many unpaid college athletes. Schools will have to shut down many non revenue sports too.

I think it will be even less than that. No way does a school like Rutgers have the stomach do compete with some of these other schools and what they will be doing.

The possibilities to buy players would be endless.

There are plenty of quality players out there that are NOT 4 or 5 star players. And now with a plethora of players coming from Europe, Australia, Canada etc., this will help us as well.

I think I made it pretty clear that we are not going to get the 5 star player or even top 4 star players here, because we're not going to "pay to play."
But there is absolutely no reason we can't build on what we have and then get consistent to the point where we become a tournament every year and not just once in three years or so as you stated.

How much is plenty? Is it 40,60, 80, 120?

There are probably 60+ programs that can be viewed more attractive to a basketball first recruit.

The stories go back decades of Duke giving money to parents/guardians of their recruits from Duke alumni through mortgage companies, no show jobs, shoe companies, etc. Most Duke alumni get top paying jobs and companies so plenty of money gets funneled back to help basketball maintain it's top 25 status

Honestly not sure much changes other than the legal money getting taxed. There will still be plenty of transactions off the books.

As far as competition for players goes nothing changes. Same as now... those with resources get the best...those without fight for the rest.

Programs will still cheat if the players get paid. They will just add "bonus money" to the payment.

There won't really be a need to cheat. They will just be willing to spend money that most other schools won't. I am guessing in hoops there is probably 10-15 schools in total that have wealthy fan interest to really make it all happen. Everyone else will be fighting over what they don't want.

You get some well healed booster that really loves Zion. So much so they are willing to pay $500K for their autograph. These are the things we will see. And if they control their likeness, there is no reason for it not to.

Yes, but not on this issue.

Too many people think it is easy for Rutgers to recruit and it isn’t. It is real hard
No $hit Sherlock. I know that. I have known that probably a lot longer than you. But still, Pikiell has shown me he can do it. And do it on the up and up. I realize we're never going to compete with the Duke's and Kentucky's of the world. But we can become consistently good like Wisconsin going forward. Also, who would have thought Villanova would be able to get top 4 and 5 star players even ten years ago?

I think you're selling Rutgers a bit too short. The new facility should show not only prospective recruits Rutgers is finally serious about BB, but it should show the average fan of Rutgers too.

Saying we should be just able to get high level 3 star guys, in my opinion, is not respecting how hard this is at the current moment
