Army vs Navy 3pm CBS , story :

Army has realized the only way they will compete is to "relax" their standards like Navy did a decade ago(cue Hudson telling me it's not true. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). You will see them becoming more and more Navy like in the next few classes.

Army still had winning teams when the academy was harder. The now abolished fourth class system once made hazing an institution. Engineering was overwhelmingly the main area of study. USMA dropout rates were in the 40s during the 70s. The class of 67 alone lost close to 30 grads in Vietnam years. I think number of football players killed in last decade fit one hand. The last time Army was a top 25 team in 90s they had recruits from just after first Iraq war. Bob Sutton (coach when 9-11 came) said 9-11 attacks made recruiting easier. I'm sure the wars keep some players away but I'm also sure that's not why Army has been losing pretty consistently since the 90s.

Monken article is a good one (I see most Army home games and see what he sees). He let people know last year that this year would be hard. Army lost a lot of good skill players on offense last year. Monken has brought in a lot more players from states in south. Army recruiting was piss poor in that region while Navy has been huge. Hopefully Army gets some decent QBs because the play there has been almost HS level play since Steelman left. Coaching still needs to get better because too many players still dont seem to know their assignments in basic way. You dont just tell players what to do - you make sure they know without waiting for a game to find out they don't know.

Monken from article:

"Some have speculated that it's more difficult to recruit to Army because there is no ambiguity about the type of military service facing a West Point graduate. Air Force and Navy can conceivably tell potential recruits that flying a plane or being aboard a ship are not as dangerous as "boots on the ground" combat.

"That's what I thought when I was on the other side. Now that I'm on this side I realize that couldn't be further from the truth," said Monken, who spent six seasons on the Navy staff. "That's what our rival service academies tell the mothers in the recruiting wars, that there kids are going to the front lines."

What standards are relaxed exactly? Every candidate has to be nominated. Nominations can come in a variety of ways. Do you think a congressmen is wasting his nominations on borderline athletes? There are Superintendent's Nominations, but they are limited to 50. Do you think all of those go to athletes? So where are all these relaxed standard candidates coming from?

Relaxing standards only makes sense if they can skate once they are in the actual school.

Go look at the courses of study at both places and get back to me.

The next Sociology or Art History major at Navy will be the first. West Point's curriculum resembles a small liberal arts college in New England more than it does a premiere STEM institution. Nothing wrong with that, per se. But it sorta TORPEDOES your theory. It's not like Kenny is emailing professors to get grades changed ;)

Navy's advantage boils down to one thing and one thing only. Staff consistency.

Navy has a prep school. Army has a prep school.

Army's facilities are generally better than Navy's.

Army wins their fair share of games matches in the other sports for men and women.

Army can't get out of their own way because of a poor decision to join C-USA and a coaching merry-go-round.

Was driving down 95 this morning in Delaware (will see MBB in DC tonight). I saw a motorcycle cop heading north and noticed no traffic coming North. I could see a mass of flashing lights and then a one mile line of busses bringing the Navy Cadets up to the game. Awesome sight when heading aouth....but the 15 mile jam behind them must have been brutal

I've seen a lot of tweets on this today.
