Hi guys, heading up to West Point this weekend for the first time. I'm curious where to eat and what to do outside of the game

Thanks

the Army museum is a great stop.
If you can, arrange to go on a tour of the facilities, there is a lot of great American history at West Point.
visit the cadet chapel if you don't get the tour.
if the weather is nice they usually have a parade of cadets on the open field near the stadium.

The procession of cadets into their seats is amazing. Has anyone taken the boat? Is there time to hit the pub? Visit other campus historic areas?

What time do we need to be in the stadium to see the procession. Will be my first time there as well. Also, I got GA parking. I wonder how far the chapel and parade areas are from that.

From ga parking you can get a shuttle or walk up a steep hill. I'll try to find out later about the timing on the parade.

Parking is the worst thing about West Point. They have you park all over & then bus you to the stadium. Make sure you remember what bus you need for after the game.

Just to be there and breathe in the atmosphere is a wonderful experience in itself. The Parade of Cadets is on the Plains near their barracks. After that you climb the hill to get to Michie Stadium.I absolutely LOVED being there the numerous times that I have gone.

If you get a chance, try to have Sunday brunch at MacAurthur's in the Thayer Hotel (on campus). It won't be the best brunch you've ever had, but if you can get window seating, the view will be worth the cost of the meal even if you didn't eat anything at all.

I've had a many a meal there and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the views.

[Edit] Not saying that the food is bad by any means. The food is fine. It's just that the location is so great that the food is not a priority.

Trivia tidbit: Almost every high ranking officer in the Civil War ( both sides) were USMA officers.

Last time I was there for the freezing rain game where we fed them a steady diet of Rice, security took forever (understandably). Is that always the case?

. The future of America's army is there. Security is always high. I would expect it to be higher after this past Friday night.

Good to know. So for anyone who's never been there before, expect to spend extra time for security.

If you have never seen it before the Cadet Review/Parade on The Plain is a not to be missed event. This Saturday it will be at 9:00 AM. This is not the Cadet march on into the stadium. Which is good also.

Yes, it is early but you will beat the rush for parking. Go. I repeat GO!

The Museum is very good also, and I encourage you to go. But you can see that any day. The Parade only happens game days and other special occasions.

How long does the cadet parade go? If we don't get there right at 9 (maybe at 9:30), will we still be able to see it? Also, any idea of how to get there from the GA parking lots?
Thanks!

The parade lasts about an hour as I recall. Yes, you can just walk up and watch from the sidelines, though there might still be seats in the bleachers. There are no tickets and you just have to avoid some reserved sections.

Most of the cadets involved in the parade will change out of the ceremonial dress and into the regular cadet uniform then head into the stadium so it can't go too long.

I understand not everyone is willing to get up at 0 dark thirty to get there but the beginning of the ceremony is a neat feature. You barely notice a movement from across the field as the first rank of cadets emerge from this archway. They get closer and seemingly bigger and they start to spread across the parade ground. It is a neat visual.

Then they form up. There is some band music and a little ceremony. They then pass in review before the grand stand and then repeat the process disappearing through the same archway.

If the weather is bad they will cancel.

The Plain is in the middle of the campus and how to get there depends on where you park. It is in front of the main buildings and on the level ground overlooking the river. Won't be hard to find. But might be a little walk depending on the lot. Not sure if the shuttle buses are running that early but they might.
This map might help.

Highland Falls is on the fringe of civilization as far as the hospitality industry goes. The hotels and restaurants should say "Bates" on them lol. The one thing I go out of my way for though is Tony's Pizza. That's because they are one of few that still make thin crust pizza. Just get a whole pie because its like $12 for whole pizza and like$ 8 for three slices. Its easy to eat 4 or 5 slices since they are thin. There are also a few small restaurants but I always end up at Tony's (near Thayer Gate).

The Museum is cool but I like the cemetery. Just walking around and reading stones is pretty wild. "Oh here's first guy who died in warplane..oh there's guy who walked on the moon...oh there's a guy who died with Custer" and so on. Its pretty trippy in historical sense and the old chapel is nice. Fort Putnam (original Rev War fort) is cool but I think it might be closed this time of year. Of course Trophy Point is one of most scenic places there is.

I like a place a few miles south of West Point. There are remains of a Rev fort (Fort Montgomery) and they are right off the road with trails that go down to the river or up Popolopen Creek where there are nice waterfalls (Hell Hole) and rock formations etc That's a 1 hour hike.

Fort Foundations near road (Battle of Ft Montgomery was Oct 6, 1777)

A group of Army football players strut into a bar chanting “Fifty-one days! Fifty-one Days!” They’re high-fiving and slapping each other on the back. The bartender says, “What’ll it be?” to the head Cadet.

Head Woop yells, “Champagne! We’re celebrating! Fifty-one days! Fifty-one days!” Bartender asks, “What exactly is with this ‘Fifty-one days?’ “ Head Woop answers, “We bought a puzzle marked from ‘3 to 5 years’ and we finished it in 51 days!!! Whoo-hoo!!! Fifty-one days! Fifty-one days!”

Have been to the south gate tavern but I don't know if they will be open before a noon start

Went there for the Army vs Duke game this year. Took over an hour to travel the last 1/2 mile. I didn't find the game day experience to be on par with Rutgers, when Rutgers was having a good season. We were a group of 8, and found the whole trip a disappointment. I would expect the traffic to be even worse this week with added security and the fact the Duke game had a lot of empty seats.

If you're looking for food options after the game check out the town of Cornwall. It's only 10-15 min from it and main st. Has some nice options. Highland falls is a bit of a trash hole... It's a bit depressed with many former employees (of WP) laid off over the years. Cornwall is a real nice town. I work (partly) at the hospital there. Lots of great restaurants and cafes

We can't get people to cheer on Rutgers Football team as they walk the Scarlet Walk.
Agree it's a can't miss but doubt there will much Rutgers fans around at that time.

Head to Cornwall or the other side of if the river to Cold Spring...highland falls is quite possibly the most boring college town in all of America...and it's not even close...

Frankly my departments chili cook off is the only thing I'm looking forward to...the game, not so much...both teams are pretty awful!

If anyone is spending the night before and wants a more "happening" scene, go down to the Newburgh waterfront. Several busier bars (Billy Joes etc) that draw a mixed age crowd (mt St Mary's college is down the road). Not as popular as the summer but will still be more busy than other local spots. 20-25 min from west point (north). Just avoid the actual city of Newburgh

Where and when??

We are heading up Friday morning and booked the 2 hour tour, which includes the cemetery. Then going to have dinner at the Culinary Institute. Will try to get my group up early enough for the cadet March, since RU Alumni tailgate starts at 9:30.

Is there plenty of game day parking? I normally buy passes ahead of time but didn't for this game.

Yes. I was told to arrive as early as you can, especially in light of Paris.

White lot parking, is general parking and it could be anywhere they can fit you. No tailgating is allowed Al as far as grilling goes in the white lots. The wait for buses after the game was like after the Louisville game in 2006 before Rutgers figured it out.

You can always park in the municipal lot (never full) across from museum and walk to stadium. Its only about a mile and lots of people walk to the stadium from all the various lots/locations. Walking probably takes less time that all the bus shuffling. You'll still need to check-in with ID at front gate

The Rutgers Alumni just sent out an email saying the Parade is 9:00 to 9:30.

I figured Id pay the game day cost to park (20 bucks according to their website) since i didnt buy a pass in advance. Does this mean Im stuck with white lot/general parking? And if so, did you say no tailgating/grilling? Thanks

Does anyone know what section of the stadium is in the sun during the game?

Well at 12 PM all of it is in the sun. By later in afternoon the the sun is in southwest sky and south portion of stadium (end zone) falls into shade first and then part of west side. The southeast side stays in sun longest and thats where some RU seats are.
