Seven Rutgers football assistant coaches – including both offensive coordinator Ben McDaniels and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi – have been let go, Gannett New Jersey has learned.

Special teams coordinator Phil Galiano, offensive line coach Mitch Browning, linebackers coach Bob Fraser, secondary coach Darrell Wilson and running backs coach/associate head coach Norries Wilson also will not be back with Rutgers.

Defensive line coach Jim Panagos and wide receivers coach Anthony Campanile currently remain on staff for Ash.

Panagos handled a lot of Florida recruiting for Rutgers under Flood. Campanile is a Rutgers football alum who has ties throughout New Jersey as a former coach at Don Bosco High School.

It looks like Ash will be bringing Vince Okruch with him from Ohio State to serve as Rutgers special teams coordinator.

I had wondered about McDaniels. His brother runs the most successful spread offense in the NFL and does it with an immobile QB. I had thought that, perhaps, given free rein to re-scheme, McDaniels could adapt to the Ash Plan.

Guess that's a 'no'.

This tells me that our new coach has on his board some very specific hiring targets and some very specific recruiting targets.

Same. Perhaps he already has an OC on the hook?

I wasn't crazy about McDaniels scheme and I'm pretty easy on our OCs. His formations shrunk the field to about a third of the size and he would constantly run these 5-7 yard routes way too often. Not a fan of it.

If we're going to clean house, this was necessary. Hopefully our S&C is revamped as well...we were no where near as physically prepared as we should have been...as evidence by our number of injuries.

I admit I complained about this too (after Flood was gone). We ran a lot in tight sets and passed a lot in spread sets. However, these coaches have to take what they have and work with it. Did we run tight sets to help protect our QB? Did we start one QB over the other mainly because he is quicker on his feet and has a much quicker release? I have no inside info nor have i studied any game film let alone practice film. But I did see some flaws out there even against the team we beat or played well against on Offense. I'll keep those to myself because they are working and learning out there. I don't feel the need to kick these players on this board.

Sounds about right. I think they need to do the same thing with the athletic department office, though.

The compressed sets are fine. Ash just needs to get better --er-- MORE players.

I would expect to see a OC with much more experience than McDaniels, if Ash was going to keep McDaniels then he probably would have ended up as the receivers coach which would have meant no Campanile. Campanile has the NJ ties and Panagos has the Fla. connections from a recruiting stand point the moves make sense. (Panagos & Campanile were probably the two most aggressive coaches as well)

Generally agree - actually when I would think of McDaniels, I often see it as a variation of bit of morality logic -

McDaniels - "well, I was just doing what it was made clear to me that the Head Coach wanted ..."
- - BUT DIDN'T YOU KNOW THAT THIS WAS NOT ADEQUATE?
McDaniels - "well, yeah ... but coach had final say - - and I wanted to survive - and not make issues"
- - SO WHY SHOULD WE WANT YOU IF YOU CAN'T BRING YOURSELF TO FOLLOW YOUR CONSCIENCE & PRESS THE ISSUE ??

This year's team was closer to the Patriot League than the New England Patriots. No Bradys or Gronkowskis here.

As expected.

We have a QB that seemed to have challenges throwing accurate balls more than 10 yards out. Maybe it was system or maybe it was QB. Don't know.

Keeps 2........for now. I'll be interested to see what the whole staff looks like (not just the assistant coaches) after LOI day.

Wasn't impressed with him either to be honest. Maybe was promoted just a tad too soon.

S&C is an area we need a serious upgrade.

I wonder if he'll have a "tweet quota" like Herman instituted in Houston for his assistants. He took it as free marketing and a mistake not to use social media as much as possible on a generation in front of their phones so much.

I'd assume they'd need bodies to help out this weekend and to assist in the transition. No clue though. But Duggan said that's the expectation.

I've been thinking Panagos would be the one most likely to stay on. I've heard many others say Camp also had a good chance.

I thought N Wilson may stick because of his popularity and RB unit success. May be that he's just too closely associated with Flood and the previous administration. As the former acting head coach I can understand that.

Neither one had their contract renewed YET. He needed two guys to help with the transition, and was
professional in letting the other 7 begin to quickly look for new jobs/ventures.

Both are in a transitionary phase until Coach Ash hires his OC and DC. Strange because they were
selected because they were the least close to "being a Flood-guy".

They get let go by March 1. Tough business; but smart of Coach ASH to clean house completely.

Wilson might not have wanted to stay

Wilson also once called Camp the best coach on staff

"Coach Campanile is the best coach on the staff..I wish I could coach as good as he does, and he's on his guys and he demands from them. He was demanding from them at breakfast (Saturday) morning, still teaching....Sometimes kids fall into, hey I've arrived, and I know Coach Campanile is not going to allow that....He's going to make sure that he's coaching them through the bye week and just continue to get better.""

Who did Norries Wilson say is best coach on Rutgers?
