Attn Gas Attendants

I’ve read that there are over 10,000 gsa’s In NJ. Can’t argue with the logic behind the law since it is a relatively painless regulation. NJ gas is cheaper than most other states.

The other 48 states. There are only 50 (wink) and Oregon also does not allow you to pump your own gas. But recently that has changed a little bit... if you are in rural Oregon they are allowed to (in some cases) pump their own gas.

And, for some odd reason, you are always allowed to pump your own diesel.

Amazingly enough, millions of Americans do that every day and manage not to drown themselves in diesel fuel or set themselves on fire while doing so.

Oregon changed their law so it's legal to pump your own there but I believe most stations remain full service.

Self serve is only allowed in certain rural areas of the state. If NJ implemented the same self serve rules, there would be no part of NJ rural enough to allow self serve.

If pumping your own gas is so great ,why does it cost more in other states than in NJ?This is one of the few services that is cheaper in NJ and people should be happy about that.

People pound their chest about being able to pump their own gas, yet it cost more... go figure? For those who want to join the other states, move there if you feel it's better. One thing I'm grateful for by not pumping my gas is someone attempting to steal my car or something in it while I'M OUTSIDE of my car.

When I lived in Mississippi, people getting carjacked as they went to go pay out of their vehicle was a problem

as a former petroleum distribution engineer I am honored!
This is what we need to focus on folks! Stop trying to phase out the livelihoods of these good people.i want everybody to stand and applaud, long and hard, on Dec 30 when we finally give the gas attendants their due. What other place in the world is more appropriate for this Appreciation Day, other than a Dec 30 game vs the Div 2 Caldwell University Cougars, in front of 1,742 people at the RAC. Stand up people.

The more significant variables in the price of gasoline from state to state are taxes and the cost of distribution.

Several years ago, a study from Monmouth University, looked at self-serve vs full-serve, taking into account the differences in taxes and distribution costs. The study found that full-serve increases the price of gas by about 2 cents per gallon in Oregon and 3 cents per gallon in New Jersey. Full serve also takes an average of 15 seconds longer per transaction. (The study notes that self-serve seems faster, because with self serve you doing stuff, versus full serve where you are just sitting and waiting.)

As for me, I don't have a problem with spending an extra 50 cents per fill up, and taking an extra 15 seconds for full serve, especially on bad weather days or when I am dressed up. (And at the station I usually go to, I think full-serve is faster. The attendant usually has the pump ready to go before I can even get my credit card out of my wallet.)

When we moved to central NY from Jersey, it took awhile to get used to the change. Kept sitting in the car waiting for someone who was not coming.
Every once in awhile, we will see a Jersey driver not able to figure out how to fill his own car.
If that Zombie Apocalypse ever happens, people from NJ will only get as far as their last fill up takes them!

People in other states mock the fact that we don't have to pump our own gas in Jersey??

Perfectly fine by me. Those folks in other areas are more than welcome to freeze their asses off in cold weather any time they like. Me? I'm perfectly happy to stay in my nice warm car, pay and then thank the attendant when he/she is done, and be on my way without my hands smelling as if they'd just been dipped in Sunoco "cologne".

So to anyone who makes fun of NJ because we don't have to pump gas and they do, all I can say is...enjoy holding your nozzle! :cool2:

The "I'll smell like gasoline if I pump my own gas," is a myth. Plus most pumps have a clip so you don't have to hold the handle while you're pumping gas. I didn't know Sunoco was still in bizness.

Well, glad to know people don't have to end up smelling like premium or regular once they're done filling up their car. -But I'm still more than happy not to have to do it...and long may that remain. -(And yup, Sunoco still going strong.)
