The Big Ten Conference released its preliminary seeding for the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, scheduled for March 9-10 in Minneapolis. These seeds will be confirmed and finalized in bracket form by league coaches on March 8 prior to the start of the tournament.

The pre-seeds, as voted on by the conference's coaches, rank the top eight wrestlers in three weight classes, along with all 14 starters in seven weight classes due to the Big Ten receiving nine or more NCAA Championships qualifier allocations in those classes.

Sounds pretty accurate based on season results. I guess you can nitpick a few guys like Gravina/Van Brill etc. but it seems good overall.

Okay I thought everyone was expecting Correnti seeded and JVB/Gravina higher. Maybe I’m wrong.

It went really well at 133 and 149. If the seeds hold, Suriano gets Lizak in the 1/4’s and Desanto in the semis. Also RBY and Pletcher hit in 1/4’s so one of them will be out early. At 149 AA will have Amine in the 1/4’s and Thorn in semis. Micah hits either Lugo or Berge in the semis. Berge is a very stingy wrestler so he could take out Lugo. Berge is talented but cutting a lot of weight and has faded late in matches. 141 will be tough. Lipari probably hits Red first round. Ditto for JVB. He is looking at Keyshawn Hayes (tough matchup for him) then if he wins, Berger. At 174 Grello gets a rematch with Hughes of Purdue then Mark Hall. So, we pretty much got what we earned plus really favorable draws for our hammers.

I never like getting a #8 or #9 seed.
That means you get the top dog in the quarters and the chance of an upset are slim.

197 only qualifies 5, so that works against Correntti.
Hopefully he gets a good random draw placement.
Missing RBY (Who is a wildcard) is good for Suriano, but I am sure Nick is not worried about who he wrestles.

Sorry to be the 4,007th guy to ask this question without checking first, but is this available on BTN online at all? I'm hoping that NO Wrestling isn't our only option to watch this.

Yes, it will be on the BTN app; which you will need to subscribe and pay for.

Am I wrong or did that not go very well for us?
It's never too much to be concerned about in the Big 10. No one has ever liked me saying this (my most dangerous words of all through the years), but as I've said for over 20 years, if you're upright and breathing in the Big 10, you're almost guaranteed to be in the Big Dance, just based on the number of allocations they get.

UNI (my team) is finally in the Big 12, where the same is true there, but to a much lesser degree. At least the Big 12 doesn't have the Biggest Loser matches to determine who gets a slot, but you can also default your way to the Big Dance in the Big 12, as you can do in the Big 10, which is equally condemnable and worthy of all ridicule.

I get what you are saying, but I would say the results have fully supported the placement of Big Ten wrestlers in the NCAA tournament over the years. The same thing can be said of the basketball tournament. If you put 9 teams in, and they do not show well, you are going to be penalized for it the following year.

Although I have no numbers to support this belief, it sure seems to me that when our guys match up with similarly ranked guys at 'smaller' schools OOC, they win, and often win big. When they match up against similarly ranked guys in conference, you get a much more varied result.

Fair enough, but I've always been, and will continue to be a critic of the system. It makes us look laughable, especially when an outsider views a Biggest Loser match and/or someone who defaults his way into the Big Dance to determine or become a "qualifier."

bad draw for collucci and correnti.....get the equivalent of a #16 seed.

Anthony gets the indiana wrestler who gave him trouble 1st time.

Random draw, if weight doesn't have more than 8 AQ's then they only seed top 8 and random draw the other 6 guys.
Sorry, but that's illogical and just dumb to make the top 2 seeds, who earned those seeds over an entire season of work, wrestle 1st round while their lower seeded 2nd round opponents don't. Also, aside from 149, every other 1 and 2 seed got a 1st round bye (except for 2 seed Moore at 197). How do you not reward the top 2 seeds with a bye?

149, 197 and 285 are the only three weights that don't have more than 8 AQ's.

Makes no sense. 1 and 2 should get byes. Zero chance Silva was a random draw.

Doesn't change the fact that it's dumb. 1 and 2 should always get byes.

You should be happy not crying. Look at PSU almost all the hammers have byes. Would much rather have them wrestling and racking up bonus

AQ numbers should have no significance in byes. I third the notion that this is asinine logic.

Ashnault vs Silva. Now there is an interesting first bout.

Colucci and Correnti got royally fvcked on the random draw. Two out of two draws and we get 16th seed in both. Bad luck so far in this tournament and it hasn't even started yet. I despise the random draw logic. Coaches should have to make their case than a vote, just like high school.

100% chance he was random draw.

I know but it still ridiculous that top seeds don’t get a bye. What is the reward for having a stellar season? An extra match should always go to the lowest seeds. I don’t get the logic. It just seems lazy.

We got what we earned. Didn’t perform during the season. The rules are the same for everyone. Let’s stop complaining. This is the Big Ten. Not the EIWA. Win so there are no complaints.

How did Ash not earn a bye this season?

149, 197, and 285...
Wrestlers beyond the top eight seeds are randomly placed in the brackets.

It’s simply because those three weight classes did not earn enough qualification slots for the conference.

Understood but in a 14 man bracket, the 1 and 2 should get byes and the rest of the field should be a random draw.
