This week's RU Board Of Governors meetings has a scheduled discussion of the new athletic facilities upgrade plan. It is probably the biggest pivot point to the athletics programs since Julie joined and I can't wait to see the proposals!

Not knowing much about this topic, will the BoG release the plans for public viewing?

They better not release these plans that they've been pushing back for 12-18 months only to tell the public, "It costs 8-9 figures and needs to all be raised privately". It better actually be something positive with tax credits ready, partial money raised, endorsements from a big corporation, something. It has to be. Julie keeps saying she won't release unrealistic plans.

If I had to guess, I would assume that it would be a phased plan, and that they have the money identified to do Phase I, but that there is a bigger plan and they will reveal that as well.

AFter all, I dont think this is solely about basketball facilities. I think its an overall master plan for athletics building in the next decade or so.

Correct, this will cover all sports and will be a LONG TERM project that will be completed in phases.

I agree, If we hear that there are plans to upgrade the RAC and build a Practice facility without specifics and that we need to raise the money first, dissapointment will not come close to how I will feel.

Then be prepared to be extremely disappointed.

Just so you are sure of what I am saying, I understand that we need to raise more money before shovels go into the ground, no issue with that. I just want to hear specific plans since we have been waiting over a year for this big annoucement.

Having plans and having funding are two different things.
Great ideas are just dreams until the money is available.

I think you will hear plans for the research district on Livingston campus, which will include RAC improvements and a practice facility, along with a hotel/conference center, and corporate research buildings. I think you'll hear some cost estimates, funding plans, and timelines. You may see a conceptual drawing or two. But you are probably not going to see blueprints, or detailed drawings. You are probably not going to see tax credits ready to go. You are probably not going to see corporate sponsorship for the basketball facilities. And you are probably not going to be happy with the timeline.

the money isn't there yet so be prepared to be disappointed

The biggest thing should be the basketball facility that will be built above a parking garage. They pretty much said it was going to happen.

With the $25M tax credit bill moving forward & Lesniak publicity, I will be very disappointed if they don't announce that shovels will be in the ground for the basketball (& wrestling) facility on Livingston in the next 6-12 months.

I predict NJ.com will have an article discussing the funding of the facilities.

I predict Christie and Sweeney will say Rutgers needs B10 type facilities but have different approaches to the funding.

I predict this board will have numerous threads calling out the press and politicians that they think are against Rutgers.

I don't need blueprints, way to early for that. I would like to see the conceptual drawings, but more importantly, I want to hear Barchi get up and say......" here is what we plan to do to upgrade athletic facilities. We are committed to these projects because we are in the BIG and need them to compete. We are proud to be in the BIG, a conference whose charter demands Academic as well as Athletic excellence. We will be prudent building these upgrades, and will need to raise a lot of money, but with the state's tax credits and donor's stepping up, Rutgers is committed to getting them done. It is our intention to start construction on the Basketball faciltiy by no later that late summer 2016.

I can live with this.

I think its pretty obvious hes going to say that, except the possiblity of the specific timeline, although evne that I would expect to be in there. I cant imagine they are rolling this plan out without at least some plan to start building sometin in the next 12 months.

They are already upgrading the Hale Center, that has started.

The $25 million tax credit for Basketball/parking will expedite that project. Plus donations from fans of both should help. That has a really good shot of getting done sooner rather than later.

Some of the projects will be long term and may not get done anytime soon but everything should be done by 2030. Some sports just have much more fan support and richer alums than others.

The more people donate, the faster things will get done.

Coach Jordan really needs something to sell to close the deal with 2016 recruits.A practice facility that possibly won't be operational for at least 2-3 years isn't the answer that recruits will want to hear when they have so many other attractive options.History has shown the kicking the can down the road approach hasn't worked for Rutgers.I understand that Rutgers still lacks financial resources but that is part of being successful in big time college athletics.

So you understand that RU doesnt have money, but then they should just spend it anyway. Good luck with that. Dear students, heres a tuition hike, but hey - we NEED better basketball now instead of two years from now.

So two years of funding expense is going to break the bank. Small time thinking.

That is very different than what Skoolie posted (which you said you agreed with). What you are looking for now is fairly reasonable .... with the exception of the timeline. I'd love to see construction start within 14 months, but I don't think it is realistic.

And "new" ones might get more support than some realize.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You a fan or not? You want athletics to stay put with what they've got? Please.....

Good job Julie. You've already disappointed the usual suspects two days before you've actually announced anything.

Just 1 hour away.... give or take 2 minutes
Despite my tone above, I am actually very excited about this. Im just not going to be terribly upset if they say - we have this plan, and we have a plan to get the funds - but its going to take four years instead of having it done next summer. The continuous transformation of Livingston is incredible and a major benefit to the whole university.
