Caleb attending P.I.T. Tournament

I know I’m in the minority, but I think Caleb has a legit shot to make an NBA roster one day. His offensive flaws won’t be exposed in nearly the same way in rotations where he’s surrounded by 4 other NBA caliber players who can create. Everyone routinely forgets this. He has the measureables. Needs to fix those FTs. Should be top priority. He can’t shoot under 70% from charity as a guard.

Caleb's offensive issues aren't just that he struggles to make jump shots. He doesn't move well without the ball, keep spacing, read situations, make good decisions or move the ball quickly.

His offensive flaws get exposed more in the NBA where everyone his size does most of those things at a high level.

Your right. But we’ve also never seen him playing along side true NBA talent. RHJ and Cliff are fringe NBA players (at best). At RU he tried to do way too much because nobody else was stepping up. All of that goes away with 3-4 offensive studs on the floor. He’ll never be a good offensive player, but that doesn’t mean he’d be a massive liability in spot minutes either. He’s not like Miller - even at the NBA level it would not be 4 vs 5. For all his flaws, the one thing that can be said about Caleb is that when teams chose a strategy to leave him unguarded - Caleb routinely made them pay for it (ND the most obvious example but every time teams took that strategy Caleb burned them - he’s a stud when left unguarded because he hits consistently when uncontested off the dribble in mid range. It’s when you apply any semblance of defense that his mid range shooting percentage tanks and he fails to finish. And of course, he can’t shoot 3s to save his life. But that wouldn’t matter for the role he’d compete for.

I agree and don’t think it’s a minority thing either. Shooting needs to improve but there are few who can play Defense like he does. He can handle the ball. He can rebound. If you need a lockdown guy he can earn some minutes. But he has to at least be a threat to shoot the ball which is why any smart coach would tell him or any player to shoot when wide open. Pike is a smart coach. The vocal fans not so much.

I watched those highlights someone posted. He really had a nice shot….

He has a much better shot and Offensive game than Dennis Rodman did. Rodman was a great defender and a better rebounder.

The game has changed but again, not many defenders out there like Caleb.

Aside from the NBA's combine, the PIT is probably the best showcase for draft eligible players, at least for college seniors. There's also lots of international scouts there so plenty of opportunity for guys like Caleb to showcase their skills so that they get paid to be pro basketball players somewhere next season. Best of luck to Caleb at the PIT!

Agreed. I don’t agree with others assessment that he doesn’t move well without the ball either. There’s a reason he was the one stuck with the ball in his hand at the end of shot clocks often. He moves fine. He’s not the guy you want creating space in iso or attempting contested shots. But it’s false narrative that he’d be a massive liability on a team with 3-4 offensive studs. He’s been an offensive liability on our teams because of our lack of true offensive playmakers around him.

He must fix his FT shooting though. Defensive stoppers get fouled off of steals regularly in transition. He needs to hit FTs the way he did earlier in his career - especially front ends of 1 and 1s.

I actually think the #1 thing that could keep him from the nba is his injury history, not his offense. NBA teams need guys ready to play roles. RHJ is adjusting to being a role player. Caleb is an ELITE role player in college with an in demand skill set of 1)defense 2)work ethic 3)length and switch ability. He’s arguably the most NBA ready player we’ve had
