Carino Talks Pikiell and the off season

I loved the part that changing up the the way they play including trapping and pressing. I think we definitely have to utilize our guard depth and length at the position. I'd also hopefully like to see the offense a little more guard oriented while still looking to get the ball inside obviously. We need better ball movement and motion while taking advantage of Jacob Young and Montez's ability to get in the lane. Hopefully Geo can take less of a ball handling roll and come off some weak side screens to free him up. I'd like to see the same thing with Ron Harper who I'd like to see catching the ball on the move more since he can score in a variety of ways.

The Spain trip is definitely exciting as it will allow the coaches to see these kids against pro comp and tweak certain things before the season that they couldn't otherwise. Also will hopefully help with chemistry on and off the court.

trip to Spain to play professional teams. That is a huge experience for these young men. Will make them more mature and broader life view, as well as give them top notch basketball experience in the summer. I love it. When is the last time the team went overseas ???

Carino drops in the mention that RU has to try to get into one of the non-exempt tournaments. I agree. Would LOVE to be in one of the local ones. This would be a big thing for RU and although it would make the schedule harder, that early season experience and neutral floor could be a big deal down the stretch. Think about how Indiana and OSU have remained bubble teams .. its because they had games like this from Nov on their resumes

Let's not assume, all things equal, that an increase in SOS doesn't impact overall record.

If we go 1-2 in one of those tournaments.......

I do agree though if this is the year we need to boost SOS.

Pikiel's preferred style of play was unknown. He said he preferred uptempo when he was hired but did not have the players for it in years 1-3, so he decided to focus on a methodical halfcourt style with an emphasis on hard nosed defense and rebounding.

Now, it looks likes he does want uptempo with a zone press and even man to man pressure. My guess is that this will ease some concerns about minutes...guys should be playing as hard as possible and then hand it off to the next guy.

Jerry does a great job...always fair and does his homework and spends a lot of time with the team and coaches.
The NJ.com does a poor job... Sarge always seems to look for the negative spin but he’s better than Politi who doesn’t do his homework and spends no time with the coach and team and attacks from the periphery. Bottom line: Jerry is the only guy worth reading who has the knowledge and is fair ....the other guys are looking for hits to their website.

better succeed in trying to get in a tourney on neutral court....playing sisters of the poor at home in round robin games do nothing for the resume...and that Umass game is likely a Quad 3 game at home..ugh, get them off the schedule

Would love to see a pressing defense.

With the preponderance of guards on the team this would be a huge advantage.
some old school 40 minutes of Hell in the RAC. Would be interesting. We should have the horses to pull it off.

Great news on the International trip. Extra practices and great experience.

While it would be nice to have an effective press, do teams with several players who regularly get beat playing man to man have the ability to press effectively? Potentially we have the numbers and the length (which maybe just as important) but wonder if this will work. I know Young is supposed to be fast but not sure the remaining guys fit the bill.

We re stuck with Umass home and home for next year and the year after. I believe it was part of the deal for the football game this year. Umass is young like us and Jonathan Laurent is on the team so we ll see him.

re: recruiting

It makes me nervous how quiet things have been on that front. I'm used to articles/twitter updates about how Pikiell and his staff are here, there, and everywhere. Like last year around this time it was all about Tai Strickland but there were a few others mentioned.

I dunno. Either we have some kind of silent commit (unlikely), we're just not seeing the reports (McConnell kind of came out of nowhere) or we're waiting to play the transfer game.

I think a 221 can be effective

Well, recruits are kind of in between the end of their high school schedules and the start of their travel/AAU schedules, so I'm not sure there's an ability to get out and watch kids at the present time.

Carino's most spot on comment is that "star power matters" referring to Palmer carrying Nebraska to two wins."Bottom line the Scarlet Knights need more horses".

Imagine if we had a dude like Palmer or Powell... Haven't had that since Douby.
