I begin watching all of our games looking for positives. Today I would have taken any sign against a poor MSU team.

Instead, there is no sign of preparation by the coaching staff. The kids on the team look as lost as the coach. There are some poor decisions being made both on the field and on the sidelines. To make things worse, the team is showing signs of quitting.

I'm really frustrated. I believed Hobbs when he said he had hired a great coach.

Can anyone tell me why number 10 Penn State isn't going to destroy us next Saturday?

Yes we will lose bad next week. Prob by 40 at least. It's a 3 yr minimum rebuild to be competitive. If you can't stomach it don't watch.

Yes he is, totally over his head. A good co-defensive coordinator from a successful program does not guarantee a good coach. I keep hearing give him time, let him get his players. Ok, but I think it's bigger than that. Didn't like the hire of another unproven head coach but he brought good energy. Can he recruit? We'll know in February. Can he coach meaning get the best out of his current players and put together a good game plan? Apparently not. Can he inspire a team? Apparently not. Can he hire a good OC who utilizes his best talent? Apparently not. A 28 year old with no head OC experience to go up against some of the best DC's in college football doesn't really give you the best odds. Can he put a defensive scheme together? Apparently not. Our so called excellence in conditioning has not made its way to the field. He has failed every measureable metric to this point with the exception of no off field issues and recruiting and that jury is out. Forget about lack of talent, the team is flawed of fundamentals. I fear and hope I'm wrong, but if he doesn't recruit we'll this year, it's another lost decade of RU football.

Can you hit the return key a few times?

He gonna get time whether you want to give it to him or not. Unacceptable result today in all respects. When asked about the slow starts he keeps saying they have a process and will stick with it but not sure he might want to mix it up at this point.

I was disappointed in the game today like everybody else. Turned it off early and went food shopping.

But I think pretty much any coach would be lost this year. We need to recruit really well for several years. And it's just not going to be easy to recruit for any coach that isn't a significant name in coaching.

Everybody jumped down my throat when I said that we might want to hold off on firing Flood until we could be sure to have enough money to convince some brand-name coach that could recruit on name-recognition alone. But we have a very (understandably) impatient fan base. And Flood's off-field issues largely forced the issue anyway. And nobody knows if RU is ever going to be willing to spend the $8M or so it will take to get the kind of instant-recruiting head coach we'd need anyway.

IMO, there are no shortcuts that don't involve spending huge sums of money.

What we have now is someone who I believe is going to be a good head coach, but who will need to be able to put together several consecutive very strong recruiting classes. And the jury is out on if he (or anybody else that isn't a big name coach) can do that for RU. But we will see. I hope he can.

My guess is that it's going to be at least three seasons before the admin is even going to consider a different HC. Fire this one now and we're out a bunch of money, plus we'll either have to settle for another inexpensive no-name coach who will have the same recruiting issues, or we'll have to spend a small fortune to get a name-brand coach w/a history of winning against very tough competition.

What did you pick up food shopping? Any coupons or good bargains to share?

We were getting blown out with better talent under flood. Why do people think we are going to be competitive with even less talent? Give Ash time to get his players. He is recruiting really well.
You have to sign the players first. He already lost our top RB. Let's see if he can hold the rest of the class together. If he doesn't, we are toast.

LOL. Meats and produce. No carbs.

Alas, I'm not what you would call a thrifty shopper. I just grab what looks good and couldn't begin to tell you what anything costs.
That's exactly what I tell my wife screw the coupons I'm getting what I want. If I cook it at home instead of going out I can afford whatever I want to eat. Yet there she is with her coupons getting crap I'll never eat because it's on sale. The stuff sits in the freezer for months.

There was absolutely no excuse for today. No talent excuse not flying for any rational fan. Unprepared and un motivated today. Sloppy and they quit.

We will get destroyed as we have sub par talent however our future is bright with mr ash

This team has the least amount of talent in the B1G right now. Our starting DE is the smaller than most dbs in this league. We need an injection of talent and luckily that is coming over the next couple years

Ash is learning on the job with talent that leaves no room for mistakes.
Yes Ash's poop does stink this season, but with the talent he has to work with there's no bathroom freshener to make the way RU plays smell better and not being experienced as a HC he might not know exactly how to get the smell out .
Ash is taking a beating thatan experienced HC might be able to look better losing, but mistakes Ash makes this year might teach him what he needs to do to make the right decisions as the talent on the roster rises so the RU FB program is the type that makes its fans proud.

Everyone needs to r

The talent gap between the 2 teams is massive. Please stop. Doesn't mean coaching can't or won't get better - it can and will - just stop claiming we have all this talent that we don't. I beg you. [thumb2]

What has Ash shone that has inspired anyone thus far?

Is there any sign of good coaching going on? Making players better? Maximizing talent? Schematically? Any form of ingenuity?

The recruiting, thus far, has been solid. But you do wonder how much weight that championship ring carries, and as we add embarrassing defeat after embarrassing defeat does that begin to obscure the shine of that ring.

Toughest thing to do is to ask for patience, but that is exactly what is needed.

Yes you can't deny that our talent gap is definitely massive, but I agree that it wasn't the main factor today. They did appear to quit after the 1st or 2nd quarter, which surprised me because they haven't wavered all year effort wise. The game showed a regression on all facets....is the team tuning out Ash and company? I sure hope not, recruits will definitely notice.

I'm getting concerned about the February class. I ask myself what Ash said to these recruits to sign on. If I was a 4* recruit, I'm not so sure I'd want to get involved in a program that looks to be bad...with little prospects for a bowl game for at least three years. Which is what this program looks like now.

And now...what does Ash and the coaches say to recruits on Sunday and Monday when they ask them about this game? Seriously: What will they say?

RU and AD Hobbs are going to give Ash every chance to build a successful FB program at RU.

If things don't improve over the next 2-3 years then we can talk about a possible HC change.

No one will take the RU job if we pull the rug out from under Ash in the next 2 years.

I'm sure his national championship was a major theme.

We've also heard that he stressed that this would be a process.

I agree, but patience doesn't mean we get slaughtered every week for 2-3 years in hopes of a better tomorrow. There needs to be progress, regardless of how minor it is. Every week, every year. We need to be moving forward.

Right now, this team/program is getting worse by the day. They weren't even competitive in more than half of their games. That's unacceptable. The majority of this team quit, so this season can't end soon enough.

I will say this, if this team isn't better and more competitive next season, Ash will be feeling the heat and start losing a ton of support. He will certainly get that 3rd year regardless but he will be coaching for his job every week at that point.

Good post.
Look at the USF coach. They were about to run him out of town after inheriting nothing from Skip Holtz. Now he's in line for a Power 5 job and his team blew out Navy.
Patience is required.

Agree that this team is shot for the rest of the season. Will be shocked if we beat MD. Forget about the PSU game.

More performances like today he will not get more than 3 years. It was a Shea like Jordan like performance today which many thought we should be past.

Oh yeah, clearly he is back next year, and I'm not sure how bad it would have to be next year to get the ax after 2, but if we are looking at similar results in year 3, the plug will likely be pulled.

Year three will be long enough for Ash to show progress or deserve to be replaced
before his fourth starts.
But this is Rutgers and I'm sure, unless he pulls a Flood , he'll get his 4th year even if Hobbs recommends change.
Hopefully by the end of year 3 the RU Fanbase recommends an extension.
A good indication of Ash going to be a sucess is if he can keep the recruits loyal enough to be around to sign their LOIs.
Without talented recruits , the HCing experience he's gaining isn't going to make RU FB a winner.
