Coach Chris Ash Postgame Press Conference - Maryland

He is classy complimenting our seniors so graciously. Next year there will be more happy post game press conferences.

I actually feel for him. I know he's making almost two million a year. But I just feel like his inner self is feeling pain.

Listen, his saving grace will be to recruit. He's young, well spoken and persuasive. In two years we will have a better idea of his coaching ability.

I'm not a loyalist to any coach here. Schiano, Flood, Graber, Ash, Anderson. They are employees. Hired. If they don't win, they move on. Winning with integrity is what matters.

Our problem at Rutgers is that we put our coaches above the program. The program is dead, the coach went 2-10. The coach is an employee. That's all. I'm a fan of the program. If the coach wins--great for the program. If the coach loses, the program suffers. Put the program first.
This is what happens whey you turn 70.

I don't think that's what our problem at Rutgers is.

I see no pain. I see optimism for the future. He took this year as a learning experience.

I see determination to make the program better. I see confidence that he has a plan. I see unwavering belief that it will take time and when the pieces are in place, it will click. I see a person who will not take shortcuts and will do it the right way.

His saving grace is going to be his ability to develop talent to the point where he's getting winning B1G level production out of the players he recruits. That's what Ohio State and Michigan are doing.

oldtimer is right.. there is a certain degree of CYA politics that goes on.. as well as battles between agents and ADs.

An AD hires a coach.. they become business partners. If the AD admits t a bad hire.. he/she is weakened. Meanwhile the agents are always pushing for more money and re-upping contracts.. you know.. to assure recruits that the coach will be there 4 years.. blah blah blah.

About the only ADs that seem to maintain some "hand" and ability to fire coaches they hired are those that were popular former coaches. And, of course, the more money your program has the more degrees of freedom you have to eat contracts when things are not working out (like Brady Hoke).

Ok now it's time to hit the recruiting trail, prove his worth and earn his salary.

Otherwise... Well I hate to even think about it.

Speaking of recruiting - does anyone know if we are recruiting some kickers. My god, there have to some HS kids who can kick better than our guys. Flood used to drive me crazy with the 1-0 this week and "drive start" over and over again but, drive start was a real problem this year because our kickers could never flip the field and we needed to be inside the ten in order to be in field goal range.

The successful programs have tens of millions in donor money and fan interest pressuring the program to win. Rutgers is scraping for donor money and fan interest just to field a competitive program. We're still a decade away from fully capitalizing on all of that in New Jersey. This is an excruciatingly drawn out process, and the 2016 college football season is barely a page in the story of how all of this is supposed to come together.

I believe the fan interest would be there if we could put together a winning program. Coach Schiano came so close in 2005-2007 but wasn't able to sustain the momentum. It will take a leap of faith by Trenton and The University to pour money into the program until the B10 money is available. It looks like we have a young inexperienced coach who is eager to learn and put tremendous effort into recruiting elite athletes, so someone please help by hiring an experienced OC and DC.

Not sure we had a clue how competitive this league was when entering. These schools have years of tradition, fundraising, and bringing in revenue. Not to mention winning. All with the fan base to match.

It's a big, long term build. We are a start up looking to disrupt the IBM's of the world.

I miss Sciano.

Do you remember how BAD his teams were early-on? For 3 years? Do you remember what a controlling, cocky, arrogant jerk many felt he was? Do you remember his recruiting struggles? Do you remember all the assistant coaches he blew through?

Let Ash build something here first, will ya, please?

Thoughts:

- don't think he looks like he's "aged 7 years" at all; maybe put a few pounds on though

- immediately responds to the 1st question, about ST's, in a manner I think we should all be happy with. "that's an area we gotta get A LOT BETTER AT..."..."we've gotta get our ST's REALLY improved..."..."ST's WERE NOT GOOD AT ALL THIS YEAR..I think you guys saw that"

- recruiting "emphasis IS ON SPEED"..."not enough explosive plays on Offense..."...thank you Coach Ash!

- "gotta get consistency at WR...we DROPPED TOO MANY BALLS out there"

- didn't realize 2 LB's were out yesterday

- "we've gotta be able to DEVELOP and RECRUIT"
...."every day we, as a staff, attack recruiting and how we recruit..."

- "losing a couple of close games in the 4th quarter...that starts with me"

Not-for-nothing but he says a bunch of things that some of us have been preaching. He's spot-on, like it or not, about everything in "bold" and I absolutely love, regardless of knowing the issues he faced with this roster, he TAKES "BLAME" FOR THE 4TH QUARTER LOSSES. I also think maybe there IS a chance for change at the ST slot based on those words.

he TAKES "BLAME" FOR THE 4TH QUARTER LOSSES.

Some here might interpret that to mean he thinks Al Golden would have done a better job in the 4th Quarter.

All joking aside, I like how he is direct, no-nonsense, and takes ownership of the deficiencies. Some need to go back to his first presser when he was hired--he promised nothing with respect to wins and losses. He knew from day 1 and told us it was not going to be easy and not to expect results right away.
