RU talent is not 25 points worse than Penn States talent level. The problem as I see it is the positions they are being put in by the coaches.

1. Play calling. Consistently run on 1st and 2nd downs, try to pass on third down. Beside it being extremely difficult to run against Penn States d-line, they also were able to play with their defensive backs closer to the line of scrimmage and the linebackers not needing to make deep drops. That Is due to Laviano and McDaniel's inability or refusal to stretch the defense by throwing down the field. As long as they continue to feature the short, underneath passing game defensive will be able to contain the running game by having the d-backs and linebackers focus primarily on run support.

2. Decision to play Laviano over Rettig. Laviano most likely has better command of the play book and offense but I think he is not a difference maker at quarterback. He has shown he is mistake prone and has questionable decision making. Last season with Nova at quarterback RU was able to get the ball to the outside receivers down the field. Laviano has primarily focuses on shorter underneath throws to the tight ends, slot receivers, and running backs As a result he has a misleading high completion percentage. Does he have the ability to make the tough throws into tight coverage ..the over the receivers shoulder throws or the throws that are well placed, allowing his receiver to make a play on the ball? I have not seen any indication that he can. Primarily he throws quick slants, hook routes, bubble screens, and the occasional throw down field resulting from being flushed out the pocket. Rettig demonstrated in the 1st half of the Norfolk game that he at least deserves a chance to see if he can make plays down the field from the pocket...recall the excellent throw to Patton where he allowed him to go up and make a play on the ball. RU's receivers even minus Caroo are talented but need a quarterback that gives them a chance to utilize their talent and size. Finally, If Ohio State can pull Cardale RU can certainly pull Laviano.

3. Soft secondary coverage, very little blitzing, linebackers covering wide receivers, the middle of the defensive wide open, the inability to defend the bubble screen, linebackers not in position for run support. All of these issues are the result of the defensive scheme of coach Rossi.

I am wondering where that 4th down play against WSU went. We went with an empty back field sent out a bunch of receivers and ended up with one not covered and Laviano hit him and we got a 1st down.

I hate to break it to you. But it's the talent. And it's the coaching. In college, the coach gets the talent, and he hasn't been good at either.

What positions seem well-coached?
I'd say WR and RB. The young CBs actually look ok too. As a unit we aren't flowing too well though, which could be fixed with a change in the way we practice. Gotta get the boys to gel

I will say this again. Football fundamentals are lacking. Technique and positioning have nothing to do with recruits. Speed and size have to do with recruiting. The fundamentals are just abysmal here. If it all had to do with recruiting, TCU and Boise State would never compete.

This is a great thread with great points. Now add in the point of we don't even know whose in charge during the games. Flood suspended, Wilson beholden to Flood requests, Rossi same old and McDaniels learning on the job.

plus Wilson was bad with the press. As much as many on this board are anti the SL and many in the press corp, it is an important part of coaching. He came across bad. Even pre-game when talking to the sideline reporter he sounded like he was at the corner store and not the leader of a major state university's football team. The comment about his babies being ready and not needing daddy may work with the kids but not with the press and the thousands of educated RU alums watching the game.

Impression -
(1.) presently there just is not a 'vision for victory'
- if the game plan were to be analyzed - even before the game is played, it would be found to lack creativity, lack specific surprises, overall play sequence would be considered predictable & methodical, few bold moves, no 'knock-out' punches even attempted (have to wonder if the QB being used actually can throw a K-O punch)
(2.) Team on the field & the game plan - strikes NO Fear in hearts of opponents
Aside from Grant's returns & Hicks flashes - the is NO part of the RU game that would concern an opposing coach - Nobody lays awake at night worrying that Laviano is going to crushingly dink & dunk them to a brutal demise.... the only concern that opposing coaches would have right now is that they worry about getting complacent / getting overconfident.

I am scratching my head as to exactly how NW became interim HC. He looks crazy on the sidelines and his post game press conference was just downright amateur hour and bizarre. It really does not instill any confidence in the program having this man as the interim coach.
My feelings are changing regarding Flood with all that has happened. Coach Flood has jeopardized this entire program by breaking the rules and trying to help a player who turned out was arrested anyway. I think this season is over, we lost two games that we should have won and we have the hardest part of the schedule coming up. I think we need a change in leadership sooner rather than later.

How come Alabama loses then? Their Coach is paid 5 times what ours is. You would think Alabama should never lose

Respect Flood as a person, his work with kids and that he truly does care about them and the program; but questioning his judgment by sticking his neck out to help a player (Barnwell) who didnt care enough about his academics or the program to make an effort to pass a Dance Appreciation. Are you kidding me? I think Flood and his crew need to go and if they can't muster 6 wins at end of season I know they need to go.
