Cool new video from Devco's Facebook page of the College Avenue Redevelopment Initiative.
The aerial confims - its out of place. They did such a good job on the Honors College Project, but the other one just seems so, blah. The design. The rationale for that design. The exterior. The name. It all seems so - well like they plucked it out of some other place wholesale.
DId they really pick "The Yard". Did no one there make the connection between the yard as in the courtyard of this project, and the yard as in, the courtyard of a prison?

Agree with derleider on this one...On the other hand, consider "Harvard Yard."
still its not on Union...but I get your pointAgree with derleider on this one...
Everybody will think the former first when they hear it and never the latter.
Still think Union Place was the best one for multiple reasons.
Semantics, no? It's on the corner of Union, Hamilton & College Ave. Sure the address & front entrance may be on College Ave, but it's just as much on Union (Hamilton too). I liked Union Place but Hamilton Place or Hamilton Yard would also work better.still its not on Union...but I get your point
When I think yard,, I think 'by Marriott' or front or back. Who would think prison first? Maybe cops, lawyers, judges? The aerial confims - its out of place. Very glossy, but I was taught when young never to put much weight on aerial views. I'd rather see those buldings from the stand point of a pedestrian.
Thanks, RU G. It looks OK. . .. no better, no worse. That's a compliment considering how much bad design thre is on the campus and its environs.

Then they shoudl have called it Rutgers Yard, or College Yard, or Brunswick Yard.
The Yard - even short of the prison connotation (just wait until their is some kind of crime there - the headlines will write themselves), is just kind of - naming by committee. Adds to the general impression that is more of a generic place plopped down on Rutgers campus.
I am a fan of prison movies actually and I have to say that the Prison reference was considered, also I liked Rutgers Yard or Henrys Yard, but the ripping off of Harvard Yard carried the day, I personally liked Scarlet Green which was universaly panned on this site and by others. Rutgers will call the building what they will and put up a hideous Rutgers sign on it like they did to Honors College, I stopped them from doing it in Newark to 15 Washington by threatening to call the historic commission on newark. There are those at Rutgers that are still mad at me for naming Rockoff Hall after Alvin Rockoff, a loyal son, Chairman of both BOG and Trustees, and an original Devco founder. Of course like most Rutgers Buildings they would still be calling it Building 4 or maybe Building 8 , as the Livingston Apartments do not have a name. So we settled at The Yard@College Ave. We need a name to use in advertising of the retail, a website so people can learn about special events and , yoga sessions on the Lawn, Movies, sprting events on the screen etcThen they shoudl have called it Rutgers Yard, or College Yard, or Brunswick Yard.

all The restaurants will have outdoor seatingI absolutely love the Honors College. The only two things I think would improve its looks would be an increased ornamentation on the brickwork, as seen on buildings like Murray hall (which has a Cupola badly in need of a fresh coat of paint, but that's irrelevant), and a more "Rutgers" clock. Perhaps having the clock with an inlay of the informal Rutgers seal, or something. The clock is rather bland, and a bit small. Other than those it seems like. a gorgeous place, and is well placed as well, perfectly between most resources on College Ave.
And here's "The Yard". I honestly have no problem with the name. It'll probably fade and be replaced by something else anyhow, either student made, or Rutgers. They also did a splendid job of placing the main, large part of the building far enough back that it's not at all imposing upon College avenue(though I feel badly for the street behind). I do wish they had chosen some better colors, but the actual design is ok in my books. I would love to see, though I highly doubt I will, an outdoors restaurant or two. Combined with the screen, it could provide a nice place to sit and watch a ballgame during the spring/summer, and a Football game in the early parts of the year.
Its all fun and games until someone gets shanked there. If they had called in Rutgers Yard or something similar, they would have been accused of ripping off Harvard. The yard suggests Harvard without being too obvious. I myself associate Yard with "a house with a yard," a benign usage. I guess I haven't watched as many prison movies as others here.

Do they still slap these ugly brownish-grey ones on every building?
If I recall my Berkeley education correctly, there were virtually no signs period, except for little ones on "temporary buildings" being used for school purposes.
Why not just put a nice sign in front of - not ON - the building? Do a red sign like the one below. Easy improvement...
Dining Services will not be running the program but they are individual ownersI highly approve of that. Will any take meal swipes/be run by dining?
One of the small wonders of this job we get to decide .......I still contend that this will be very very successful .......Hard to disagree with this. I think the public space will likely be a success but the overall project just doesn't look right to me.
