The latest step in the overhaul of College Avenue is underway.

Last weekend, workers covered 50 New Brunswick Parking Authority meters between Huntington and Hamilton streets with bags, marking much of the parking on College Avenue for removal.

Any news as to when they start building the new quad where Brower and Record Hall is now? That's seriously the ugliest part of campus and I can't wait until they tear it down.

I'm assuming this is part of an overall planned biking path to connect all of the campuses together. Cities everywhere are creating bike paths these days.

The campuses are already connected by a bike path that was finished a few years ago. On the CAC, it runs on George Street from Huntington to Albany, left on Albany to neilson right onto neilson to Douglass campus. It is a lane on each side of the road, separate from vehicular traffic. Albany street was realigned to make room for it ( the median was moved and thinned)

I'm hoping Records Hall and the Smokestack are bulldozed over the summer. No inside info just deducing it from previous timelines.
It is a shame that the smokestack's visibility and taken advantage of and painted red or otherwise made to advertise Rutgers. Well, too late now. Maybe they can make the fence to be built in front of Scott Hall high enough to render that trash piece of architecture hidden from public view :0

I really hope the fence isn't a shitty chain linked fence. I really hope continues the theme of Queens Campus and it's brick and black painted metal. The entrance to Vorhees Mall could have a gait similar to the entrance of Queens Campus sort of like Harvard Yard. Of course not as extravagant. Probably won't happen though.

that's way overkill for college ave, maybe that's a better fit for the southern US border, Mexico may even chip in if you give their citizens a tuition cut

Yea, that's weird. Looks like the City of New Brunswick built them and RU doesn't recognize them...? Either way looks like they are getting official lanes now and will probably be painted green like most bike paths are today. http://bikes.rutgers.edu/DOTS_files/Maps.pdf

I mean not as elaborate obviously but sort of like the gates into Queens Campus.

The city of New Brunswick created bike lanes all over town, that wasn't RU. RU has created the ones on College Ave. It will look awesome.

I actually think (hope) they're going to get this right as my first thoughts when reading the word 'fence' was "what???" I actually think they did a disservice to use the word fence because it might give people that are used to Rutgers screwing things like this up every so often to think immediately of cheap chain link fence. However, the rest of the description alluded to brick and I think similar to what is planned around the football practice fields, my understanding is that it would hopefully be a more classic looking brick and faux wrought iron (painted metal) wall/rail/fencing rather than just a plain old fence.

I personally never loved the use of bike lanes. Hoboken has made a huge push for this over the years creating bike lanes and placing rental bike stations all over town. It hasn't been a complete dud but I don't see large scale acceptance of it. It basically gives people that would've otherwise walked a slightly faster option. I think the bike lanes are an eyesore, when you have all sorts of markings, colors, and 3 ft plastic posts all over the roadways.

I just wish RU, NJ, and New Brunswick/Piscataway would just come together and get the funds by any means necessary to do a light rail. That would dramatically change the experience of everyone and it could link up the two cities right to the train station.

The fact that they built a new computer lab in the new building and OIT is in the process of moving College Ave lab staffing there would make it more likely.

to be fair, Hoboken has a LOT more traffic congestion, jaywalkers and double parking, esp. on Washington st, having run into a car door someone opened without warning, i know how unnerving it is trying to avoid them on the right while trying not to veer into auto traffic on the left while also keeping an eye out for jaywalkers.
the bike lane from the CAC to Douglass has much less congestion, jaywalkers and for the George st. stretch, no parking alongside it. I've used it many times (the George st,. stretch) and it's actually quite lovely compared to riding along Raritan ave. in HP.
the college ave stretch will also be sans parking alongside it so and it may get more use since it's on the main drag.
And let's not mislead readers who know nothing about Rutgers and/or the area; Piscataway is in no way, shape or form a city; it's former agriculture area/township turned into a suburb with the advent of rt. 287, giving residents a link to NYC/Newark. it has no central core by assorted little townlets where farmers would congregate to sell their products and conduct local business ;)
