Of course people on our site are still interested in Corey Sanders. Was just wondering, what might have been.......

When we had a chance to sign Corey, having seen his basketball videos, my first thought was NO WAY did we have a chance, seeing his talent. Obviously, Shoes worked hard and had an in and we ended up getting him. While Corey played well for us on and off at times and especially great in the Big Ten Tournament, it got me thinking about what "COULD" have been if he had become what Carsen Edwards became and was surrounded by better players.

When I have watched Carsen Edwards play for Purdue the last few years, he is the player that I was hoping Corey "would" become. Edwards was actually ranked a little lower than Corey(one year difference) in his high school rankings according to Rivals.

Of course Edwards became a much better shooter than Corey, but his overall game is so much better and he is electric to watch play. I love watching Edwards play and of course Purdue has been outstanding the last couple of years.

Just was thinking, what "might" have been............. We really seem kind of cursed how "most" of our recruits either don't pan out fully or just transfer out......

MAYBE, one day things will change and Rutgers can stop being a last place team in every league we are in.

In watching about 20 different games on tv yesterday, it is just so obvious how much better ALL of those teams are. Just thinking out loud.........

One day, things will fall in our favor. Unfortunately, we have been saying that through so many coaches and players for almost 30 years........

Best of Luck,
Groz

The 2016 class was a deeper class than 2015. Edwards probably would have been ranked in the Top 70 of the 2015 class.

I hate the break the news to you but Carson Edwards didn't become a better shooter than Corey, he was a better shooter than Corey before either of them arrived at their respective colleges. In HS Edwards had deep range, could play either guard position and was, what some people call, a natural scorer. The big question about Edwards was could he be a full time point guard since, in HS, he played like he was wired to score.

The gap between the two is too great for me to play the "what Corey could have become" game.

The recruiting services did not project him to be an All American and our top recruits never become All Americans and have not been able to elevate us out of the cellar.

Groz

Carson Edwards is a shooter. Corey Sanders isn't.

There are plenty of shooters in college basketball. Carsen Edwards is a star guard who can drive, dish and is a great player.

What I meant was that the disparity between those two players is so great in that respect that I don't see the point in the comparison.

I never said anything about All-American for either Edwards or Sanders.

Neither were close to one coming out of high school so I'm not sure why you even brought that up.

JQ,

Very true. I guess I am just so fed up with us being bad, that I am venting how our "4 star" player coming out of high school never progressed enough to become a consistent star and so many other teams have players that crush us year in and year out.

Best of Luck,

Understood, Groz. I date back to the Littlepage/Wenzel days, so it's been a long, frustrating ride for me, as well. But it just means that it'll be that much sweeter when we finally get over the hump.

Oh boy, you're not going to want to refresh your memory on the recruiting rankings of many of the guys we brought in over the years. Inman, N'Diaye, Chandler, Echenique, Rosario, Miller, Seagears, Jack, and Doucoure… all 4*...

I know. I was just thinking of recently how Sanders would be electric and start to lead us to the promised land.

All of the names you mentioned, for the most part, never became great players either for us or their transferred to team. You could add Wally Judge(even though he started at Kansas State)

Man, we really suck. Sorry for venting, but when is it going to finally go our way?

Best of Luck,
Groz

Yeah, I remember some of them. That one big class that Rice had ended up being a bit disappointing. But part of the problem is when we actually get a four-star recruit or two, we pour out all our hopes onto them. Meanwhile, the good programs have three or four of those guys for every one that we have.

Yes, along with rarely having good upperclassmen to show them how to do things right. Vicious cycle.

Yeah, that's another problem. We had too many functional, building block type players transfer. Guys like Todd Billet, Echenique, Rosario, Eli Carter, Biruta, and probably others that I'm forgetting.

Edit: Oops, I forgot Dahntay Jones. I used to go to church where he played middle school ball, though it was after he was long gone.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Carsen Edwards made 1st team all B10 as a sophomore and is one of two players up for B1G player of the years this year. Sanders didn’t make 3rd team or even honorable mention as a Junior. There is no comparison.

If I am following Groz, I think this is part of the point he is trying to make...which is Corey came to us higher ranked than Edwards, but didn't 'deliver' to the level that Edwards did.

I don't think he is trying to say Corey was better than Edwards (in college)

Players are more than their recruiting rankings. There has to be some thought in to learning about what makes someone tick and try to assess coachability and desire to get better.

Most of our 4 rated recruits failed miserably here.

Apples and oranges. Coreys not nears edwards skill level, edwards is insanely good. And as you all know im a huge corey fan too

If Edwards was a better shooter and scorer, why was he ranked behind Sanders, who couldn't shoot? What were the people who compile such rankings watching?

Part of that is talent evaluation. A lot of it is coaching.

Thank you.

Bottom line is that we have not caught a break in many years in how our players have developed, while so many other schools have players that come in not highly rated and develop into tremendous players.

Groz

So what? You are arguing a slight difference. It is not like Edwards was going to be ranked 30th in Corey's class.

Groz, was just replying to Lotus who’s Question was why was Edwards ranked lower than Corey.

Not trying to make any other assumption or claim.

We've had a wicked combination of bad luck and bad coaching with our 4 stars.
