It was awesome. Big crowd and Pike was pumped. Brought Akwasi along discussing his GPA , 3.79 and the teams GPA, 3.1 , highest ever. Akwasi talked about his adjustment and his love of Rutgers and his teammates.
Coach never lets you get too specific and no one including me had the balls to ask him about the play at 2 minutes left with Paul. I did ask about the moving screen emphasis and Myles and he agreed with me saying from where he has Myles coming from the low block to out high, it is the guards fault for not waiting and going too fast until Myles can get set. He actually responded hilariously saying “ were you in film session yesterday as Akwasi was nodding “ . He also agreed with me that the last one called against Myles was not a foul.
He loves his team, loves his bench and will not tinker with the starting lineup the rest of the way, when someone asked him about moving Jacob into the starting lineup. Loves the energy Jacob and Paul bring and Shaq when they come in and usually elevate us and definitely no drop off from the starters.
Really concerned all the time about keeping the players off their phones. Single hardest thing to do as a coach today and didn’t have to deal with it back in the day. Especially challenging where friends , family are hitting the players up and asking about playing time, etc. He seems to be doing a great job in this area.
He is taking the season a game at a time and is loving the journey with ups and downs and injuries and obstacles to overcome. Really get the sense he thinks this team is right there but he knows how difficult this league is as he recited a number of times that last week , Ohio State was still ranked 11th in the country but they were 13 th in the Big 10 to tell you how crazy good the league is this year and every year according to him.
Geo is likely a February return . Although the broken thumb is healing it is a combination of the healing and Geo’s pain tolerance because he expects that as soon as Geo will be back, the opponents will whack down on his hand to test it. So a process !
Overall, we have a great coach and a great person at the helm. He loves it here. He represents Rutgers the right clean way. He personally came around with Akwasi before the meeting and shook hands with all 100 people in attendance thanking us for the support. What other coach anywhere in Big time college athletics would do that ? Probably no one. He is a stud.
