CVS Post Game

Wow. Never heard it suggested before that shooters can lose confidence if they don't think their team can get offensive rebounds. Confident shooters don't think there will be a rebound. Is the implication that it is harder to get confidence back when your team is not rebounding on the offensive glass? If she wants the slumping guards to drive more and shoot from closer range, why isn't that happening? Do they not listen once on the floor? Communication breakdown?

It's also interesting to hear that we switched to zone to try to minimize early foul troubles, only to admit that exposes us to pressure because we only have two ballhandlers on the floor if we are playing zone. Well, maybe that means you have to stop playing zone and get more ballhandlers on the floor if the opponent is pressing? If I am an opposing coach game planning to face us, just from this clip I would press(2-2-1) from the opening tip and drop into a zone once the ball crosses midcourt to pack the inside.

CVS sounded more like an analyst breaking down what is wrong our team than the head coach whose job it is to put us in the best position possible to win games. I hope she has a plan to try a different approach going forward.

I sat not too far behind the bench for CVS's first 15 seasons. I have long felt - inexplicably - that what CVS "wants" and what the team "executes" don't always jibe. This goes back to the early years and a disaster we attended at Boston College. I have never understood it. But am I the only one who saw - many a time - CVS making hurry up motions and the pg slowly dribbling up the floor?

The team does look like they lost their confidence - always a big part of Rutgers teams. Have no idea of the details regarding why.

The part about zone and foul troubles and ball handlers is just the typical challenge that coaches face, of one sort or another based on the makeup of their team. She isn't telling opposing coaches anything they won't see looking at film, unless you pre-suppose they are all incompetent. As the head coach (and coaching staff) they need to try and choose the best option among potentially limited choices. Sometimes, maybe that doesn't work so well.

This sort of thing (i.e. the particulars) isn't what is worrisome, it is the "fade", call it what you will, this team is going through and the potential consequences that are concerning, not the nitty gritty of it all.

While I agree that losing one player shouldn't cause a complete collapse, I think it had a cascade effect. Caitlin has been our most consistent rebounder this season. I think Vicki's knees don't allow her the mobility she once had. I don't think she jumps as well as she used to. I have noted that she never does the tip for the opening jump ball any more. I don't believe she has done it at all this season, even when she was starting. Coach also doesn't play Jordan much. She isn't as quick or athletic as most of the other players, so that leaves us with a smaller line-up. Carey has been handling the bulk of the rebounding and she has had trouble finishing point blank shots the last few games. As for the other forwards, Mack at least will take shots, but Giles hardly ever does anymore. That leaves us with the guards who have all been struggling. Arella has been the most consistent lately, but she had a terrible shooting night against OSU and you could see her lack of confidence, especially from long range. She was in tears in the handshake line with the fans last evening. Wilson was trying to drive to the basket, but she kept getting stuffed. Carey was getting stuffed too. Calhoun has been unable to hit the side of a barn this whole season. She has had injuries to her fingers, but she seems to have lost all confidence too. You can also see CC's frustration. She gets the ball to an open player and they either don't take the shot or miss it. Her long range shot has been off the last few games too. I think the team needs a good sports psychologist, because CVS is right, this is the same team that was shooting just fine and playing good defense earlier in the season. I think losing Caitlin the way they did was probably a lot harder than if she had been lost to injuries. You expect to lose players due to injuries. You don't expect to have your friend and teammate suspended for assault. I hope they are able to snap out of it.

This team is in crisis mode. The loss of Jenkins hurt, but this team should not unravel the way it has. C. Viv IMO has done a head-scratching job in motivating our players to do what comes naturally, shoot, drive, rebound, score and play suffocating defense. Where is it? It's absent in all phases of the game right now.

After the loss against Maryland, I thought this team would work their butts off to get back on track, because that was the first loss this team had experienced at the RAC in two years. Instead, we get this total implosion; an embarrassing display of incompetence where we lose to a very, very mediocre OSU team by 20 points on our floor. Think about that for a moment. On our floor we lose to OSU by 20 points! That's beyond embarrassing. It's disgraceful by the players and the coaches.

I waited over night before posting this and I'm afraid that after last night's debacle, we will be lucky to even win another game this year. What's sad, is we were rolling through December and January, and the seams of this team began to tear apart in the Indiana game where we had to press, and press in order to pull out a win. Creme had us in the 4 seed slot with two games at home. Now, we may not even make the NCAA's.

The other confounding message, is that C Viv. stated in her post conference that they went into a zone that their players really hadn't practiced that long to slow down OSU. That forced C Viv to only have two ball-handlers on the court. I understand why she did it. When things aren't working you trying something different to start a spark on the team. It's obvious however, that the team as a whole is playing their worst basketball down the stretch instead of playing their best basketball when it matters. So the zone wasn't effective and we still couldn't score. This sadly, is more than just a funk they're in. This is becoming systemic.

I cannot believe for the life of me, how fragile the mindset of this team is. Jenkins deserved to be suspended no matter what defense can be put up for her. The fact that this team has unraveled because of it, shows just how incredibly vulnerable this team is, and we don't have strong leadership coming from our senior or anyone else on this team. Sorry, but you don't lose to a non-NCAA team on YOUR floor by 20. Can they recover? I don't know. Right now the answer is no. They have shown me nothing since losing to Minnesota. Losing to a top 10 team in Maryland is understandable. Losing to a middle of the pack OSU team is inexcusable.

gotta have faith in vis, she is a hall of famer and hobbs says she interviews well

I have said it 100 times. Play a zone against us and the game is over before it starts. A smart coach clogs up the middle which OSU did and we were finished.

Listening to this to me it sounds like the team is lost.
