Daphne Groothuis Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Groothuis' award is the first Big Ten recognition this season, following the opening week of games. Last season, Katie Larmour and Nikki Santore each were named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in consecutive weeks in September

Interesting that she is from Netherlands which produces good field hockey players (only basing this on past Olympic performance). Do we proactively recruit other countries or are these girls seeking out interest from US college teams thru recruiting services, camps, etc.

Field Hockey seems like it will be the next RU sport to explode on the scene much like Men's Lax did almost overnight. There is a ton of young talent on the team and Cuneo is a beast. Don't be shocked to see the team ranked at some point this year.

Not sure how we're getting these girls, but our other Dutch girl, junior captain Linde van Schaik scored two insane back handed goals against Towson. We also have two girls from Ireland on the team, sophomore Katie Laramour & freshman Kerrie Burns. We also have senior captain Simrin Dhillon from Vancouver, Canada.

Great, GREAT news!! Believe it or not the girls are currently ranked 30th. I don't know if I ever recall us being ranked in any type of position as such even when Heather Jones played (but could be wrong).

10 teams on our schedule are currently ranked ahead of us including 6 of the top 13 SO let's be hopeful, as there's definitely, finally, light at the end of the tunnel in the sport, but let's not get too crazy with expectations either:

Syracuse, Maryland, Delaware, Penn St, NW, Michigan, Stanford, Iowa, Penn, ODU, Kent (beat 4-1)

I believe it's the final RPI, which is how the season starts maybe, like a few other sports IIRC. That being said that is a DAMN difficult slate. I would gather, possibly, the toughest in the nation. We literally play last year's #'s 3,4,6, 7, 12, 13, 16, 21, 27, 27, and 28!!!
