David Remnick, Editor of The New Yorker, Named Rutgers University’s Commencement Speaker

A Princeton guy?

But I do love their cartoons. 👍

He's a Jersey kid -- born in Hackensack and a graduate of Pasack Valley High School in Hillsdale. Quite exceptional in that time for a Jersey Jewish kid (and one who went to a Jewish day school) to get into Princeton. He's an unconventional choice; I hope he's a good speaker.

RU announced that David Remnick, , a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, will deliver the commencement address next month for the 2022 graduating class.
Remnick, who joined The New Yorker magazine as a staff writer in 1992 and ascended to editor in 1998, has reported pieces from around the globe and profiled a number of prominent people, including former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen, according to a statement from Rutgers University. He has been a visiting fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and has taught at Princeton, where he received his Bachelors degree in 1981, as well as at Columbia University.

Remnick also serves as host of the magazine’s national radio program and podcast, The New Yorker Radio Hour, which airs weekly on NPR around the country.
He authored five more books, including a biography of President Obama, “The Bridge.” Under Remnick’s leadership, The New Yorker has won a record 55 National Magazine Awards.

Who? Sounds like RU is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

You lost me at Journalist and editor at the New Yorker Magazine . He’s a Harvard Professor now so that says more than anything else about this conservative choice and what he will be preaching that day. Also the quote , “glad it’s not another politician “ now that’s is funny.

Well according to you Pacheco will only make the NFL if he learns to snap and the decommit will never see the field at Georgia. So before I can support your position on this gem I have to see the other predictions play out.

I can’t remember if at the time of graduation I actually culled anything from the chosen speaker. When you say thought provoking most there won’t give to chits.

Will be funny when they find necessary to lock one of the very few threads on here that has anything to do with RU.

Sounds like an interesting choice to me. Better than another politician.

Agreed. Too often, politicians use the occasion inappropriately. A writer generally tries to provide interesting content to those consuming it.

Given all that's going on in our world, it'll be very interesting to see how this speaker will address these new grads.

I do not believe you are correct. He has received an honorary degree from Harvard, but ye continues to be editor of the New Yorker.

He wrote a good book on Muhammad Ali that I read back in 1999.
He's not a bad writer
Of course he's a soldier in the hive mind population allowed to speak at Rutgers.
Now that that gang is self-immolating, maybe in the near future RU could get grad John McWhorter (85)
Now THAT would be epic

The perfect commencement speaker was Isaac Asimov at Stevens Tech, Hoboken NJ in 1972. His talk emphasized the importance of technology progress.

“Journalist” code for agenda pushing lefty…probably woke, super about diversity and freedom of speech, as long as it is the “right kind” of approved speech.

Well you say what many on here feel… no make that know… I can’t wait to read the speech he gives and the direction he goes.

Frankly, I don't care who is giving the speech or what they talk about. I will not bother to listen or learn what this year's speaker spoke about.

I don't remember who and don't care about what the graduation speaker spoke about at my college of engineering graduation. It had zero effect/impact on my life.

OTOH, I distinctly remember and was amused the that the person who spoke at my law school graduation was Robert E. Brennan, who was convicted of penny stock fraud and went to prison--memorable in that crime doesn't pay.

Yes not a tenured professor at Harvard .
I don't think he's any kind of professor at Harvard -- maybe he's taught a course up there as a part-timer, but that's a lot different than being a professor, even an untenured one. (An untenured professor is generally a young professor with the goal of gaining tenure and thus lifetime employment.) But I can''t even find corroboration of that.

Looking forward to it but not sure I’ll hear a word. My daughter will be graduating.

He's a tad closer to the center than your description, but that's the general direction.

I answered you back correcting my earlier posting. . You are correct he’s not a tenured professor. You couldn’t wait to make sure I saw that? Yeah you’re a lawyer alright .

Check out Conan O'Brien's 2011 commencement speech at Dartmouth. It's on YouTube, especially the first few minutes with him giving the speech and Bush41 on the platform about to receive an honorary degree.

What the hell are you talking about?? You said he wasn't a tenured professor, and I said he wasn't any kind of professor, tenured or untenured. Boy, do you have a chip on your shoulder!

Unless it's an entertainer of some sort or a national political figure most kids don't pay attention.
I've gone to four commencements for my kids and 3 of the 4 were completely forgettable. The exception was my oldest's graduation from BU. Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan was the speaker and since this was in 2005 he had everyone's attention.
John Kerry received an honorary degree that day and all anyone noticed about him was that he wouldn't wear his hat. Guess he didn't want to mess his hair?

Happen to have a transcript? I think I know the gist of where he would go, but I still would love to read it. Pretty big fan of his work.

I was a class officer at Rutgers many years ago. One of the jobs of the class officers is picking the commencement speaker. Or at least it was when I was an officer. It can be political. Who you can and can’t have. The brass at the school are definitely involved or push certain people depending on the situation.

No…what the hell are you talking about ? On your post back
to me you said something along the line of “ he’s not a tenured professor nor did he graduate from Harvard.” I answered your post accepting that fact and said I was mistaken. One more thing barrister . I think you are the one with that shoulder chip. Did you see my reply back ? You made the correction for me but then decided to throw something else out there. I’m to old to carry a chip …

Snooki was booked as an entertainment act by a student group. Nothing to do with commencement. Irrelevant to this conversation.

I'm sure Condoleezza Rice appreciates your support.
