Laviano played his heart out, but he is very green. On the last drive he checked down two or three times to TEs underneath. Luckily at the time they were incomplete, because none were past the sticks with no TOs. Someone needs to coach him up in those situations. And then the spike.....

Didn't want to start a new QB thread -- so, I'm hijacking this one.
I've got no problem with Laviano starting. I think he's played very well and has shown he is a good (not great) game manager But, more I think about it - isn't it time to give Rettig 2-3 series a game?

With Flood back, good time to "press the reset" button". Team has shown Laviano is the starter - playing Rettig a little shouldn't create controversy.
Or is that impossible? And I don't mean for Flood - I mean for the press and many fans? Is it possible for Rettig to play a bit and it not start a QB controversy?

Laviano played very well against MSU, he is young and needs to be coached hard. He made some good decisions ..using his feet in the MSU game. He needs to work on properly setting his feet and using proper balance,etc when he throws. A reason some of his throws may be a little off and lack velocity. When he sets his feet and throws..he does well. RU is going into a very difficult stretch and if things don't go real well (which is very possible) I think Rettig will get his opportunity to play.
But- A throw to a TE on a check down is better than a throw to a not open WR. Most fans just assume there are open WRs on every play, and when you play against some really good defenses like we do, it's just not the case.
Laviano doesn't get as much time to throw as we/he/the staff would like. When he has time he slings it. Hell, he even makes some great throws and scrambles when under immense pressure.
id love for Hayden to get reps too, but not at laviano's expense. Nothing wrecks a team more than coaches playing a guy who doesn't give them the best chance to win in that particular game. Seniors care about now. Tomorrow isn't given in football - only to the fans it is.
In a normal situation, check downs are okay. But not when the passes are 5+ yards short of the first down marker with less than a minute left and no TOs. He was lucky the passes were dropped/well defended because if caught, that's another 7 or so seconds off the clock.
It is very possible those decisions were not Laviano's fault. It is POSSIBLE the TE's needed to run their safety valve underneath routes past the 1st down marker, not short of the 1st down marker.
