DJ Durkin to Maryland

Amazing hire. Good for them. We're going to need a big gun.

Durkin's like Schiano when he started here.

He's the Michigan DC. He's a good recruiter but beyond that wasn't sold on him. He worked under Muschamp who couldn't get his offense right and under Harbaugh who's offense is a pro style and I'd say kind of simple but well designed. Not the offensive guy they supposedly were looking to hire.

He took over for Dan Quinn at Florida who went on to be DC at Seattle and now the HC at Atlanta. So Durkin took over an already really good defense at Florida under Muschamp/Quinn and again at Michigan. So credit for maintenance but that's about it. If I went defense Aranda would have been my choice but I don't think Aranda would have been as good a recruiter but that's not a selling point for me anyway.

BTW again another example of a school with big dreams and supposedly a lot of money still hiring a solid coach but not the top hot names out there. Mizzou's 2 names are also a mid major coach in Rhule and their current DC Barry Odom. This is my point we can hire a good solid name just like any of the others. Go in a new and different direction not the same old same old.

One other thing on him the last 2 spread offenses he faced as DC, Indiana and OSU ran roughshod over their defense.

The Michigan DC who just got 45 rang up on him in a rivalry game? Interesting.

The subplots in this B1G east division are interesting.

That's one game and I won't read into that much but IU also ran all over them just like OSU both solid to good spread offenses. Plus the 2 places he took over at DC were already very good so hard to know just how good he is. Credit for maintenance but can't say much beyond that. He is a good recruiter though.

This is not confirmed yet (though it may very well happen in the next 24-48 hours). Would be very happy with this hire as a Terps fan -- gets a young guy in there (just 37) who can recruit his butt off. Also allows Locksley to probably stay on board in some capacity on offense, who is basically linked to our entire recruiting class. Don't love Locks as an OC but the idea of Durkin + Locksley recruiting gets me excited.

I do think it would be a good recruiting team, not so sure about x/o team or developer of talent team.

Agreed there but I'm happy putting my faith in a young guy to bring in some good minds around him. When push comes to shove I think we really just need some energy about the program and I think a guy like Durkin would bring that energy.

He's not my #1 choice (Mullen is probably that), but still think he'd be a solid hire.

Maryland fans were claiming a big time hire. This isn't it.
Nothing new there, not Mullen not Kelly. Kelly is really the big time one, Mullen would have been a good one though. This is usually how it happens. I've said this before fans of teams with bigger names than Maryland and as much money think the biggest in the profession are coming to their job but in the end they get a good solid name but that's it. Kelly ND, Strong Texas, etc... Meyer to OSU and Harbaugh to Michigan are the 2 recent ones that came to fruition but more times than not they don't.

As probably our resident college coaching expert, what do you think about ND OC Mike Sanford. OC at Boise St, Recruiting Co-Ord and WR coach at Stanford. Isn't he on Syracuse's short list? know he's young but has a lot of experience at top tier programs.

Not enough experience for me and the reverse of Durkin in that he coached under offensive coaches like Bryan Harsin and Brian Kelly so again hard to know how good he is on his own. I think both call their own plays to a degree too.

I would hope Rutgers is capable enough to attract a head coach who has perceived recognition greater than Durkin.Maryland failed to bring in a big name coach which is needed to compete with the elite schools in the B1G Eastern division.

Will this move keep Haskins in the fold....he visited Florida this weekend

If Durkin does indeed happen, I'll bet that Haskins is dependent on Mike Locksley staying on the staff. Haskins (and other commits) have been vocal about wanting to play for Locksley.

Bumping this because I expect this deal to get done in the next 24 hours. I can't speak for all Maryland fans but the consensus on the 247 board is that this was plan 1B to Mullen or Richt, but it's a very solid hire. Will be nice to get some young blood into the coaching staff.

Specifically interested to see if Durkin keeps Locksley around. Much of the upcoming class (namely Haskins) are very likely to look elsewhere if Locksley isn't kept on in some capacity, but I have a feeling that is going to be up to Locks himself since he really wanted the HC job.

I think the fact that Maryland (apparently) didn't reel in a huge name means that the Under Armour connection isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

Great news in that he does not strike fear into my heart unlike some others mentioned. Very good hire though.

Hopefully he ends up like Schiano when he left- a .500 level coach.

Its certianly not an amazing hire when they were talking about Chip Kelly and all that UA money. Its a mid-level hire to a mid-level school. Given the possibilities, Id say its about hte best case scenario for us. Hiring Richt or Mullen or someone like THAT would have been an issue - no matter who we hired we would basically be no better than 6th in the division. This at least gives us a chance.

Is this confirmed? It was rumored the other day but I have yet to see anything confirming Durkin being the Maryland HC.

Maybe we can hire Locksley as HC.

Not confirmed yet but picking up steam. Like I posted above, I would expect this to be a done deal in the next 24 hours or so. We have recruits coming to campus this weekend and I assume (at least I hope) that we will know the HC and his OC/DC by then.

Maybe we can hire him on the staff. Hes not getting an HC job.

I'd expect him to bolt for a job at Texas if he isn't retained at Maryland. He is tight with Charlie Strong and his son (a 4* QB commit) is committed to play there next year.
