A New Report Raises Big Questions About Last Year’s DNC Hack
Former NSA experts say it wasn’t a hack at all, but a leak—an inside job by someone with access to the DNC’s system.

...We come now to a moment of great gravity.

There has been a long effort to counter the official narrative we now call “Russiagate.” This effort has so far focused on the key events noted above, leaving numerous others still to be addressed. Until recently, researchers undertaking this work faced critical shortcomings, and these are to be explained. But they have achieved significant new momentum in the past several weeks, and what they have done now yields very consequential fruit. Forensic investigators, intelligence analysts, system designers, program architects, and computer scientists of long experience and strongly credentialed are now producing evidence disproving the official version of key events last year. Their work is intricate and continues at a kinetic pace as we speak. But its certain results so far are two, simply stated, and freighted with implications:

There was no hack of the Democratic National Committee’s system on July 5 last year—not by the Russians, not by anyone else. Hard science now demonstrates it was a leak—a download executed locally with a memory key or a similarly portable data-storage device. In short, it was an inside job by someone with access to the DNC’s system. This casts serious doubt on the initial “hack,” as alleged, that led to the very consequential publication of a large store of documents on WikiLeaks last summer.

Forensic investigations of documents made public two weeks prior to the July 5 leak by the person or entity known as Guccifer 2.0 show that they were fraudulent: Before Guccifer posted them they were adulterated by cutting and pasting them into a blank template that had Russian as its default language. Guccifer took responsibility on June 15 for an intrusion the DNC reported on June 14 and professed to be a WikiLeaks source—claims essential to the official narrative implicating Russia in what was soon cast as an extensive hacking operation. To put the point simply, forensic science now devastates this narrative.

This article is based on an examination of the documents these forensic experts and intelligence analysts have produced, notably the key papers written over the past several weeks, as well as detailed interviews with many of those conducting investigations and now drawing conclusions from them. ..

On the evening of July 5, 2016, 1,976 megabytes of data were downloaded from the DNC’s server. The operation took 87 seconds. This yields a transfer rate of 22.7 megabytes per second.

These statistics are matters of record and essential to disproving the hack theory. No Internet service provider, such as a hacker would have had to use in mid-2016, was capable of downloading data at this speed. Compounding this contradiction, Guccifer claimed to have run his hack from Romania, which, for numerous reasons technically called delivery overheads, would slow down the speed of a hack even further from maximum achievable speeds...

Time stamps in the metadata indicate the download occurred somewhere on the East Coast of the United States—not Russia, Romania, or anywhere else outside the EDT zone.

A speed of 22.7 megabytes is simply unobtainable, especially if we are talking about a transoceanic data transfer,” Folden said. “Based on the data we now have, what we’ve been calling a hack is impossible.” Last week Forensicator reported on a speed test he conducted more recently. It tightens the case considerably. “Transfer rates of 23 MB/s (Mega Bytes per second) are not just highly unlikely, but effectively impossible to accomplish when communicating over the Internet at any significant distance,” he wrote. “Further, local copy speeds are measured, demonstrating that 23 MB/s is a typical transfer rate when using a USB–2 flash device (thumb drive).”

    Executive Summary

Forensic studies of “Russian hacking” into Democratic National Committee computers last year reveal that on July 5, 2016, data was leaked (not hacked) by a person with physical access to DNC computer. After examining metadata from the “Guccifer 2.0” July 5, 2016 intrusion into the DNC server, independent cyber investigators have concluded that an insider copied DNC data onto an external storage device.

Key among the findings of the independent forensic investigations is the conclusion that the DNC data was copied onto a storage device at a speed that far exceeds an Internet capability for a remote hack. Of equal importance, the forensics show that the copying was performed on the East coast of the U.S. Thus far, mainstream media have ignored the findings of these independent studies [see here and here].

Independent analyst Skip Folden, who retired after 25 years as the IBM Program Manager for Information Technology, US, who examined the recent forensic findings, is a co-author of this Memorandum. He has drafted a more detailed technical report titled “Cyber-Forensic Investigation of ‘Russian Hack’ and Missing Intelligence Community Disclaimers,” and sent it to the offices of the Special Counsel and the Attorney General. VIPS member William Binney, a former Technical Director at the National Security Agency, and other senior NSA “alumni” in VIPS attest to the professionalism of the independent forensic findings.

The recent forensic studies fill in a critical gap. Why the FBI neglected to perform any independent forensics on the original “Guccifer 2.0” material remains a mystery – as does the lack of any sign that the “hand-picked analysts” from the FBI, CIA, and NSA, who wrote the “Intelligence Community Assessment” dated January 6, 2017, gave any attention to forensics."

Most top Dems have dropped Russia thing like it was hot. They know its turkey feed. Now the seething mobs have moved on to the special persecutor. They don't really care how it happens - they just want to negate election and vacate Trump - an insurgency even if there is no camo and red berets. FBI, CIA, IRS, MSM, NSA etc - all of them can lie and collude to bring dirty business on Trump and the seething mobs are 100% ok with it. All the talk about the need to counter "threats to democracy" are bologna. They are the threat to democracy.

this article..by a left leaning news organization just presents the FACTS of the case, there is nothing groundbreaking that we do not know. It goes by facts not by speculation. The hysterical Russian chickens do not do this...they have already shouted and screamed and confused FACTS with speculation. Now they have conflated issues not involving Russia collusion with this investigation. The end game is to resist and obstruct Trump as long as possible and try to pin some tangent financial issue on him that had nothing to do with Russian collusion. So easy to see, I have been saying this since February..waste of time and money

Quite a few people generally considered liberal (Ars technica, Jeffery Carr among them) have been involved with debunking the Russia stuff. They lean libertarian and liked Sanders - weren't Clinton diehards. They want to know what really sank them, and aren't falling for the plate of Russian slop that's been served-up. So much nonsense has been given the appearance of cedulity that calling it out isn't that hard. Its like one of those occasional 9-0 SCOTUS decisions. Some calls are easy. Russian gov was never proven linked to any hack. The attempt to make it seem so was clumsy.

Of course there are still a lot of questions begging to be investigated. These are mostly ignored or cloaked by MSM, Dems, renegade agencies and officers. Dems quarantined their computers from US agencies and went with a sketchy (and connected) private firm who made ties to Russia and then walked it back with little notice. All along the way people were saying info was actually coming from a DC insider.

Also taking place along the way, was the very strange involvement of criminal Pakistanis in Dem computer networks and operations. Just a few weeks ago one Pakistani on Deb Wasserman's crew - Imran Awan - was arrested at Dulles (bank fraud) attempting to leave US.

No surprise he was also linked to Mark Rich, the Sanders voter widely suspected as DNC leaker . They were at a party drinking the night Rich was mysteriously murdered. All these things should be getting more attention than social gatherings with Russians in attendance.

@zappaa : Just an FYI that ex-NSA cyber spy Bill Binney, with 30 yrs experience, was on Tucker Carlson last night explaining this....interestingly Binney noted that the DNC refusing to turn over their computers to the FBI was and is very suspicious since the Feds have very sophisticated cyber espionage tracking capabilities.

So this is premised on transfer rate? For one, enterprise connections easily hit 22MB/s. Heck, when I download off usenet in Bucks County, I get around 35MB/s. Was definitely getting those speeds last year in 2016 and the year before, so I fail to see how speed here is any sort of proof and how they figure these are unattainable speeds..
