Down goes Seton Hall

From Holloway's post-game interview:

“Came out flat. No energy. Never been a part of something where guys don't want to play basketball. Saw it this morning in the walk-through. We had nothing.

I gave the guys off yesterday to regroup. I tried to jump on them, tried everything. Got to give Siena a lot of credit. Coached a good game. The sad thing was, the two best players on the court tonight were from Siena."

Ouch.

should have been 0-3, stole game on miracle 3 at buzzer vs Memphis.

And this is why I can’t take Carino seriously: he tweeted after the game that should be favorite to win tourney after Memphis. Wonder what spin he’ll put on this.

Sounds like a guy in over his head.

How to get your team to quit on you

Yeah coming out with no filter publicly never seems to work. Seen it with other sports/teams I follow.

I know it's early but agree with poster who says he's in over his head. Per SHU board they're a disorganized shambles on the court. From the little of their season I've seen I have to agree.

My thought on SHU is this: They are a bad team with a good coach who actually hates his team (and, I think the job). He just wants to coach basketball, not glad hand and meet with boosters. His team is taped together with transfers that don't have chemistry. On any given night they could make everything or get blown out, with the latter being more likely. I don't think they will make the tournament this year, but if Sha isn't driven mad by the ancillary stuff and gets his guys in here, they will probably be fine. That's what makes Pikiell so good, not only is he a great coach, but he gets the other stuff too. Everyone (well, mostly everyone) loves him.

Could be for sure. They've had an endless string of premier guards -- Foye, Lowry, Reynolds, Brunson, Aricdiacono....it comes to end eventually
Wouldn’t mind that at all. There is a great (if not super eloquent) Ludacris lyric that is just running through my head as I read this….

It's good that they lost because it suggests they won't be as formidable an opponent when we play them.

It's bad that they lost because it lessens a win over them and magnifies a loss.
I don’t doubt that our game with them will be a death struggle decided in the waning moments

No matter how bad they look they will be up for us

or, an attempt to motivate

this type of criticism can go in one direction or the other
He's been doing this since August and it hasn't worked. I'd be surprised if it set in now.

They have a bunch of local guys and they'll be up for our game no doubt. We need to not intimidated by their length and physicality and actually penetrate and make them foul. They look like a great team getting off the bus but their team defense is not very disciplined and Samuel is not at all a rim protector.

It is very early in the season and he challenged them as to desire to play and win
At some point players won’t want to lose or look bad against their traditional rivals,
both in and out of their league

IF they have the talent they will respond to either his criticism or to the challenge in front of them in regards to rivals

I doubt that a team with a lot of talent gives up mentally for season
If they have done that, then the coach is starting out as a failure

SHU still is pretty god. I expect a good game. However at the end of our win over Rider a Seton Hall fan came out of the doors behind section 212 wearing his SHU sweatshirt and was yelling very loud, "Just wait until Seton Hall takes you guys apart". I felt like telling him off but it wasn't worth it. I hope we take SHU to the woodshed. GO RU.

In an earlier game I saw Holloway tearing into a player and thought.. that guy is gonna lose that team. Good players can make very bad coaches... even if they are smart enough and know the game very well. Of course, there's a chance that player needed to be.. er.. "adjusted", in public, on your home court in from of your home crowd and on TV for a few hundred to see (ha!). But this post-game quote kinda pushes my suspicion into the "I was right" territory. Doom awaits.

I watched the last few minutes of first half when Siena went on a run. Holloway had his hands on his head after every possession as if to say "wtf are you guys doing!?"

Then he laid into Kadary Richmond at end of the half... Looked like Richmond was giving it back to him a little as well. Body language throughout the team looked awful.

Oh well.
