Dylan Harper on picking Rutgers over Duke, lessons from Kobe and MJ, and his love for Ace Bailey

It’s more of a who the heck cares at this point? It’s like leaving a job - you don’t get props for going out in a blaze of glory and telling your true feelings. Nice in the moment, but with big fat bucks on the horizon there’s no incentive. As much as he may love the coaching staff, I’m sure there is some annoyance that Pike didn’t surround him with a better team.

The irony of it is Pike thought he was helping Dylan by recruiting volume scorers instead of defense first kids. He was clearly worried that if he ended up with kids like 2023-24 who couldn’t put the ball through the net it might reflect poorly on Ace and Dylan because they could be triple teamed over and over. Well Tyson Acuff and Jordan Dercack may be able to finish transition lay ups but what good does that do when you don’t get those opportunities because your D is so bad? Can’t score in transition when you don’t get any stops. Nothing to execute.

I wouldn't exactly call JWill, Davis and Derkack "volume scorers".

HC Pike did try to surround them with defense first kids.

They came and did their best. Unfortunately, it didn't come together and translate to a winning season, let alone a top-tier season. One-and-done players can be highly effective when entering an established program. Coming into a program without an established roster of winning talent? Well, you can easily get a below .500 result, as we now know.

So where are all those guys that usually comment,? I'm guessing a positive article doesn't move them. Now imagine if Harpet said something negative about RU or Pike?

I won't speak for others but I didn't read the article.
Also didn't read the Carino article.
If Dylan ends up on the Nets, I'll likely never read an article about him or watch an interview (post game or otherwise).

But you are right in that many people jump all over other Rutgers related articles and tweets.
Maybe we need that Oscar guy to re-tweet the article.

Huh? J Will and Davis were already at Rutgers. They were not part of the portal class brought in to complement Dylan and Ace.

Tyson and Jordan were the text book definition of high volume scorers. Tyson Acuff was literally second in all of D1 in FG attempts and 7th overall in ppg in 2023-24. Jordan averaged 17 ppg and only 6 players in the NEC attempted more shots per game than him. Compare his 11.5 shot attempts per game to our roster last season. Simpson was high volume at 8.5 attempts per game.

Did HC Pike not choose to keep JWill and Davis as significant contributors?
And surround Dylan/Ace with them?
Dylan and Ace were complemented by JWill, Davis and Derkack a lot more than the rest of the transfers.

Perhaps he targeted players like Acuff and Martini and Hayes because he thought JWill, Davis and Derkack would provide the defense needed.

Wasn't Derkack NEC Defensive Player of the Year?
I'm sure that played into the calculation of adding him.

Great articles. I will ALWAYS be a huge fan of Dylan's and Ace's for their decisions to cast their lots with RU. Dylan is a young man who, I'm sure, did not envision the health issues he encountered this year. He seems so uber talented and smart. As for Ace, this is a young man that came here as a 3, possibly a 2. He was asked to sometimes play here as a 4, sometimes as a 5. He never complained after he arrived here about that. He also never wavered in his original verbal commitment, not once. He seems so effortlessly gifted physically, its amazing. Neither of them generated any vibe of poor attitude, despite some fans wondering aloud about when they would throw in the towel during the season. We ended up with these two young men through $$$$ machinations that I'm pretty sure most fans still do not understand. That Pike did not end up putting the best possible supporting cast together for these two stars....well I can't say that I was surprised by that. Do you think that Pike, the ex-AD, Schiano or anybody in this Athletic Department ever dreamed that RU would get two players like this...in one recruiting cycle/class???? I'd be lying if I said I thought so. It was like when Phil Sellers committed here in 1972.... I said, "WHAT???!!!". It's no wonder we had no idea how to best handle our good fortune. Short of having the sensational-year-that never-happened, this type of exit by Dylan and Ace is the best we can hope for. We provided a cocoon of safety for these kids for a year - they seem to be leaving appreciative and with absence of malice. I hope Pike and Schiano can continue to evolve in this still-new era of NIL and multiple free agent/non-contractual portals. Life at Rutgers is usually "there's always next year "...it will likely always continue that way. Go Dylan! Go Ace! Go RU!

You're sure about some annoyance? Twist and manipulate what he's said. Typical. What next. he probably hates his mom?? Please don't tell us what someone is thinking.

I’m not sure what point your trying to make. We made the decision to run with a frosh center along with Ace and Dylan. 3 frosh - all offense focused are not likely to provide great defense. Common sense.

You think he assumed J Will and Davis provided enough D to carry things? Come on. I’m sure he was thinking / hoping Jordan would be a little better on D but he played in an all zone system so Pike had to know he was rolling the dice there - plus the NEC stinks. He didn’t target any kid specifically for defense. The bottom line was after what happened in 2023-24 Pike didn’t have the guts to target any major conference kids known for defense who were inefficient scorers and therefore would’ve come cheap (Mag types). We brought in 4 portal kids - none were that style. It was all about offense - efficiency or scoring ability.

If your trying to imply we could’ve sought out 6 portal kids instead and yielded better results that’d be laughable. We could barely sign 4 guys - PJ being a last minute pick up.

It’s a media interview. PR. Come on, you can’t be that naive.
Classic Lou. Rather than believe DIRECT QUOTES from the player, everyone should believe Lou who says “I’m sure there is some annoyance that Pike didn’t surround him with a better team.” You know what I’m sure of? Dylan is a pretty thoughtful kid who doesn’t need Lou speaking for him.

If HARPET said something negative, I’m sure you’d be the first to jump in.

If Dylan came out saying he had regrets you would be the first one running to this board creating a thread.

Stfu, you’re full of $hit.
