Rutgers men's lacrosse picked fourth in Big Ten coaches’ preseason poll
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 12-ranked Rutgers men’s lacrosse had a trio of captains recognized as Big Ten Preseason Honorees, the conference announced Monday. Max Edelmann, Kieran Mullins and Kyle Pless earned the recognition. The team was also ranked fourth in the coaches’ Big Ten preseason poll.
Edelmann was named a Big Ten Preseason Honoree for the second consecutive season. A 2017 Second Team All-Big Ten selection, the redshirt senior was also named Preseason All-Big Ten by Inside Lacrosse. Edelmann has been Rutgers starting goalkeeper for the past 29 games, compiling 289 saves in that span. The Middletown, Md., native had a goals-against-average of 9.52 and save percentage of .505 last season. He holds a 22-10 lifetime record, with a 9.27 goals-against-average and .516 save percentage.
Mullins is Rutgers’ leading returning scorer after posting 31 goals and 17 assists as a sophomore last season. Inconference games, the attackman led the Big Ten with 15 goals and was third with 22 points. In his career, the Islip, N.Y., native has scored 66 goals and recorded 33 assists for 99 points in 28 games. The junior’s eight goals last season against Michigan matched the best single-game scoring performance in the nation last season. He is the only player in the nation to have two games of eight or more goals in the last two seasons, also having scoring eight times as a freshman against Michigan in 2017.
Pless was previously named Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native played in all 15 games last season, compiling 28 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. The senior long-stick midfielder has 35 caused turnovers and 80 ground balls in 45 career games, while also collecting six assists.
The Big Ten Conference features all six teams ranked in the preseason top-20 nationally. The Scarlet Knights were picked fourth in the coaches’ preseason poll, following No. 9 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Maryland and No. 10 Penn State. RU was tied with No. 17 Ohio State and ahead of No. 19 Michigan.
Five teams ranked in the top-20 will visit HighPoint.com Stadium this season and season tickets are now on sale for the low price of $40, with the season beginning on February 2.
