Edelson: For Rutgers, it's Bowl or bust - seriously!

1) ridiculously STUPID headline for an article on a coach and program in its 1st season together, to go along with everything else we've talked about 10000000 times already, wow...

2) "SHOULD have" beaten PSU 2 years ago...."COULD have" beaten Maryland...."they beat Indiana last season"...."SHOULD be the one road game they win...

...did this do ANY homework prior to writing this garbage? I mean aside from looking at the results of the last 2 years and this year's schedule? Wow this is poor work and he gets paid to do it lol!

I assume he posts here.

"Is that too much to ask/"

No. But it's not the end of the world if they don't make it.

The article does not bother me.... He makes a case on how we have beaten a few teams we need to beat, and came close in a game or two more...... It is the way an average fan would think.... How you could have gone to a bowl, by winning the close losses, or repeating an upset win of a year ago.

We have a two point reality working here...... One part is that just about every publication has us finishing last in our division..... There might be one out there that puts us ahead of Maryland, but I did not see it.... And it is tough to get to a bowl IF you do finish last.

The second optimistic reality are the numerous reports that so many of our players are noticibly bigger and stronger than ever before..... The prognosticators are probably not looking at this at all, just going by returning players and stars of incoming recruits......

We might win some wars in the trenches this year..... We can hope for that.

Couldn't read the thing since I was fighting one ad after another instead of the article.
But, stupid idea. This team has gone through a lot in the last year and I think most of the fans just want to see some upward trajectory in performance and the beginnings of a structured plan for the future. Truthfully, I would be stunned if we get to a bowl and I am not a negatoid, just a realist.

A bowl invite would be great, but I'm not counting on it. I'll be happy just with better play across the board. We're only beginning to climb the mountain.

Except for the title, it is somewhat of a positive article. There is some hypocrisy in it for example he says that two teams have new coaching staffs so Rutgers can beat them. Well Rutgers also has new coaching staff. Also he writes stuff like this which is amateur hour: "The is the program that surprised a lot of people"

Thanks for posting that. Was pretty much what I was thinking.

Get AdBlock+. Seriously. I didn't see a single ad.

The problem with that article is the whole "or bust" line. Of course the program would greatly benefit by winning 6 or more games this season. It will help us hold on to key recruits, and will give precious practice time to younger players.

But it's not "or bust". That's just ridiculously over-dramatic.

Just look at Edelson, and then you'll understand why the story/headline reads the way it does:

That's dumb.

Washington = Loss (Why are you playing west coast games, play in florida dopes)
Howard = Win
New Mexico = Win
Iowa = 75% Loss
OSU = Loss
Michigan = Loss
Illinois = 75% Win
Minnesota = 50% Win
Indiana = 75% Win
MSU = Loss
PSU = 50% Win
MD = 50% Win

So way I see it you are about 5 wins and you'll look to upset PSU, Minnesota or Maryland to ge to six.

I know everyone wants to chalk up wins to average teams, Illinois is meh and so is Minnesota yet they still win games.

There's a poster who has been pounding the "we MUST win and go to a BOWL in 2016" mantra, essentially insisting that if we don't, we'll likely lose both this class and the next...Edelman?

He conveniently creates his own straw man and has his easy story line for the season. He's grooming for a starting role at the SL when the next vacancy soon occurs.

No real problems with the article. If you believe this team is better and more prepared vs. last year. Going to a bowl would not be too much to ask.

We should beat NM and Howard.

The ones that could be wins are.

PSU/Indiana - breaking in new QBs. PSU breaking in new coordinators. Franklin doesn't have a good gameday coaching record thus far. Last years game we have no Carroo and played a good 3 quarters on D. Its not a stretch to think this will be close.
MD - In the same boat as us however I believe their talent level is lower.
Illinois - Solid QB. Ok talent and new coach.

Wash - I am leaning towards a loss here, however, if the stars align we may be able to get one based on its the first game and Wash really has no specific film to look at form last year.

Minnesota - This one can go either way.

I LOVE it when we are DOGS.I LOVE it even more when we Dogs tree the Bear. New Staff. New Culture.New Season.AND NEW RESULTS!!!

The problem is that between columnists and sports radio there is such a glut of these guys that they feel the need to throw outrageous positions out there so they get attention and clicks. He's probably thrilled that someone finally noticed his work today. This has to be one of the more ridiculous things I have read.

I find myself agreeing with your posts more and more . I have said it before the print media covering this team is pretty much useless . I don't know if it's a sign of the times or the particular talent at these outlets . You get better news reading this message board , watching r vision or social media and watching BTN .

That's dumb.

You mean play it safe and have a lame SOS? Last time I checked we won on the left coast a few years ago. Not saying we're going to win this time but we supposedly were going to get our butt's kicked by what's-his-name's Air Raid, too. It doesn't matter how we won; we won.

Don't be so condescending....

Someone should tell the writer to take another look at the schedule since Maryland is on the road, not at home. Way to fact check!

He took the same journalism classes that Politi took.

If RU doesn't go to a bowl, there goes AAU status, world peace and no more football. Doesn't this writer know that odds are that RU will not going bowling this year. Another stupid hit piece!

Bowl or bust my ass. This reminds me of the ESPN idiot who said that Penn State should fire JF if he doesn't win ten games this year.

These dopey reporters sure love setting the bar ultra high for Big Ten schools but never SEC schools. SEC are allowed to lose 2-3 times and still get ranked.

This is a rebuilding year for us, it will take a strong effort just to get to 4 wins.
Most fans understand this and just want to see the team play with high energy and see improvement even if the win-lost record is the same as last year. We just want hope that starting next year we will start to get better and in 3-4 years we might see the start of something special.

Let's face it. This year's team is a big unknown to most of us. We know most of the players. We know what they've done in the past but sooooo much has changed. New offense. New defensive schemes. New staff. New attitude?

The same goes for most of RU's opponents. Are any completely set on both sides of the ball? Are some also in the middle of massive changes? Do they have players set to continue what the likes of Cook, Elliot, Sudfeld, Calhoun, and other game changers accomplished? Even OSU with all the pre season projections of making the playoffs has had to face a turnover greater than just about any other P5 team. MSU too.

Boy, that's a long way to go to simply say I have no idea what to think. What I do think is it's going to be an exciting and likely surprising year in the entire B1G.

Actually, we probably have our best D and O line combination in years. Beefed up by S&C. We have perhaps the best running backs ever, save RRay. Our secondary is better. Hopefully our game day coaching is better. What you don't realize is that this team this year will be better than next year when all of GS recruits are gone. 6-6. Quite doable if we can anything out of the qb position.

The guy writes what could only be considered an optimist's look at what could happen and he gets blasted. Jesus. I bet most posting didn't actually even bother reading the article. Talk about negatoids.

I feel like Rutgers is at the point where the expectations before we play a game should be to go to a bowl. We were a complete mess off the field last year and somewhat on the field, and we still should have gone to a bowl last year. We blew the game against Maryland, and were a dropped interception from beating Wazzou. If fans of this team feel like we are only going to win 3 or 4 games this year, they have the right to their opinion, but I feel like we have more talent then that. Between the O Line and D Line we have 8 guys starting who are in their 4th or 5th year in the program.

The guy is just outlining the best case for the program this year. Granted it was a dumb title for the article but I agree with most of waht he has to say.

This is what makes college football so much more exciting than the NFL, IMO. Each year there is so much turnover you don't know how each team responds...
