So, how do we stop this old man. Seems like he’s been there since we joined the B1G. We have had Wisconsin’s number for some reason, beat them when they were #4, should have beaten them at #15 in MSG (Happ terrible FT shooter of course makes those 2 and had 30). But when we beat them last year, Happ was totally silenced, and it was a group effort. Freeman could really post up with him inside. Who does it now? Gene, maybe Thiam?

He looked good as ever and scary against Iowa the other night on the inside. Could be like Ward for MSU type game. I say try to get him into foul trouble! Look what 2 quick ones on Geo and Gene did for us. Dump it inside to Myles, Doorson, and set up lots of drives for Geo and Kiss right at him and maybe tell them to be flamboyant like everyone else always is and gets the calls. Have to try something

He’s a problem. Great, great player. Probably the best big man in the college game right now.

Last year Happ had to do everything for them because of injuries. This year them players are back and taking some of the load off of him.

5 thoughts
1. shorten shot clock with zone press (not an option because 3rd game in 6 days)
2. guards play tight on the perimeter making entry easier (applicable)
3. bigs dont get beat down floor allowing Happ to set up (applicable)
4. 4 bigs all playing so everyone is fresh and making sure Happ gets fronted and not get good position (applicable)
5. OUTSIDE BOX IDEA!!!!!! Mathis guards him and with his quickness make sure he always fronts him. Lobbing over Mathis would be a low percentage play (this is a way out their idea and asks too much oh Mathis)

Last year I would agree with that Greenie but Trice will kill you from 3

I remember speaking to Jay Young about how he approaches these games. Guy is a wealth of knowledge, and just a great person.

It's interesting thinking back to last year. They had guards on Happ at times just to make him uncomfortable.

Michigan and Nebraska are two teams that Rutgers will struggle with. The rest of the games Rutgers will compete. I like how the program has some OOC games mixed in with the big ten.

Play him straight up, help but don’t over help, keep those long arms in his passing lanes.

Foul him every time he is close to shooting the ball from close range. Only a 50% foul shooter historically.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Yup. Throw Carter and Doucoure on him and use all of their available fouls.

Can't stop him, just hope to contain him because he impacts the game even without scoring. His IQ, court vision and passing ability make him a very good assist man. He is a tremendous defensive rebounder.

Rutgers could employ the "Hack-a-Happ." Ethan has never made more 59 percent of his free throws for a season.
Other than that, hope he gets whistled for two early fouls and has to sit most of the first half.

Let him have his thirty but shut down passing lanes and dont give up easy threes. In other words stop the rest of team he cant beat us alone

With Happ coming up tonight and dealing with MSU bigs, Shaq Doorson is going to be greatly missed next year. Shaq is an unsung hero for us this year. Myles will need to learn from Shaq how we handle Happ tonight so he’s prepared to deal with bigs next year.

Ward did whatever he wanted vs Shaq. Beat him to spot and had position for easy buckets.

Great point. If they weren't great at shooting, isolating him might be beneficial. With this team, you may just let him go and be better for it.

Ward is an absolute monster. Get what you're saying but Shaq has actually been effective against Happ in the past. Pike/Young are relatively effective at game planning against him, at least last year.

Ward is a guy where for 20 minutes a game, he can be pretty dominant against anyone. The only things that usually stop him are his own conditioning and Izzo and him having friction

Shaq kept going for offensive rebounds and Ward would just run the court and get right under the basket and cause either EO to pick him up or Doorson was giving up the post position since he wasbt back in time to stop ward from getting to his spot. Tough to stop him down that low especially if he is allowed to travel.

Overall Shaq's post defense has been top notch and I expect a big game defensively against Happ tonight. Don't help on him unless Happ has his head down with multiple dribbles. Let Shaq play him straight up

I think tonight’s game plan will be very interesting. Our secret weapon is our staff game prep.
As far as playing Happ straight up - I’d like to see a lot of Omoruyi being quick at picking up an offensive foul or double team to make Happ pass and frustrate him often. Fingers crossed.

I’d put Eugene O on Happ early and let Happ try to do his signature “backing down” and when he leans a little too hard, gene draws the charge. Get 2 quick ones on Happ. Key to victory. If we can’t contain him though I don’t blame the staff or the players, he’s just that good

Maybe if we double we bring Thiam to make it more difficult to kick it out with all that length. I just don't want the predictable double as soon as he gets the ball where he knows what to expect and hits the kick out open 3. I'd rather take my chances Shaq one on one unless he is getting abused

Problem is, Eugene gets those calls against most players but against Happ it might be him in foul trouble because the refs aren't calling it the same way

Foul Happ but foul him on the way up to prevent him from scoring an “and one”.
