’18 DT Tyrone Barber (Venice - FL)
The Rutgers staff continues to prospect the sunshine state and that has resulted in an offer going out to Barber, who now has 10 FBS offers, with a few coming from Power Five schools.
"I don't know much about Rutgers, but I'm planning on making a trip up there see if that's a place I want to live,” Barber said. “I've been talking with Coach Burnham and he's telling me basically when it's time for me to play, I would be playing nose guard. They would want me to patrol the C-gap. Right now, Rutgers is in my top five.”
’18 RB Jermar Jefferson (Narbonne - FL)
The Cali RB is on campus and is really enjoying his visit. Scarlet Nation has learned that the staff informed him that they are looking to add a second running back in this class. Isaih Pacheco's commitment now gives Rutgers the option of trying to squeeze Jefferson or wait things out for a kid like Stevie Scott.
’18 LB Calvin Hart (American Heritage - FL)
The Florida linebacker has a long list of offers and now that Rutgers has entered the race. there is a chance that Hart could be on campus in a few weeks.
"I've been talking to a recruiting assistant from there for a while,” Hart said of Rutgers. “He told me that the DC and linebacker coach loved my film I got on the phone with the DC and they offered me. Hopefully, I'll be able to get up there on July 9th."
’18 DB Darnell Shields (St. Edward - OH)
It appears as though Chris Ash is starting to make his presence felt on the recruiting trail as the Ohio three-star, who holds double-digit offers, named Rutgers among his favorites/
"I think Coach Ash is giving this team a winning attitude. If I were to go there, I would also have an opportunity to play early,” Shields said. “Also, the school has some great academics.”
’19 QB Will Gipson (Aliquippa – PA)
He recently added offers from Howard and Toledo and fans should expect him to blow up shortly as it seems Rutgers could be that next offer. He’s hearing a lot from the staff lately and it is believed RU will offer sometime soon.
’19 DB Chayce Chalmers (Stonewall Jackson - VA)
Rutgers is the first to get in on the 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety prospect and that offer came following a strong camp performance last weekend.
“After camp was over, I talked to Coach Niemann and we ended up going to the football office to say goodbye to Coach Baker and then I ended up in Coach Ash's office,” Chalmers said. “I was nervous and happy all at the same time. I am definitely coming to one of their games this year, I can’t wait."
’18 DT Kyle Thomas (Oscar Smith - VA)
He was originally scheduled to visit Rutgers this past Thursday, but unfortunately due to a family emergency he was forced to reschedule. However, he did mention that Rutgers and James Madison are his top two schools at the moment. Right now, the Scarlet Knights are behind the Dukes, but once he visits Rutgers that could change.
Notable Passing Camp Teams
The Rutgers Passing Camp will take place this Saturday and will feature teams competing for the 7-on-7 title and here is a look at some of the more notable teams who will be in Piscataway.
Curtis (NY) – This squad features talented wide receiver Amad Anderson, who may be feeling a pinch in his recruitment as his number of interested schools are not what they once were. However, he remains a very talented and shifty playmaker, who can do a variety of things.
Irvington (NJ) – The local program has some talent worth looking at and that group is highlighted by wide receiver Jasiah Provillon, although he never received an offer from Rutgers.
Midwood (NY) – Another New York program with a fair amount of talent and that is expected to include tight end Matthew Thomas, who holds a Rutgers offer. It is a safe bet that the RU staff will be checking out Thomas.
Tottenville (NY) – Zihir Lacewell highlights this group as the Staten Island program has created a pipeline to Rutgers over the past couple of years. Lacewell wants to play receiver in college and the Scarlet Nation staff will be keeping a close on him throughout the day.
Erasmus Hall (NY) – Newest Rutgers commit Kessawn Abraham will be one of the primary players on the Erasmus Hall squad and he will be joined by wide receiver Sean Ryan and defensive back Shamel Lazarus, who both hold Rutgers offers.
St. Peter’s Prep (NJ) – Prep is always a force in this tournament and this time around, the squad will be stacked with talent and that includes four-star Shayne Simon who coincidentally had U and BC offers at this time last year. Tossing the football will be Messai Maynor, who will be another one to keep an eye on.
Bergen Catholic (NJ) – BC has always been a fixture at the passing camp and will have a host of prospects, including class of 2018 athlete Josh McKenzie.
St. Joe’s Regional (NJ) – The St. Joe’s squad will feature QB Nick Patti who held a Rutgers offer before committing to Boston College. However, most eyes will be on class of 2019 four-star tight end Howard Cross.
