First Practice

Wait a minute....I saw Getty's catch a pass in the post.

It would be great if Freeman can consistently hit that mid range jumper I saw him hit in that clip to go along with ability to drive into the lane and work around the rim.

PLEASE.....stay healthy.

Luv seeing the hard nosed hustle. Looking forward to the season, for a change.

Win the OOC games you're supposed to win. Beat your share of the bottom part of the B1G. Spring an upset or two. Is that asking too much?

No! Year 1 is not about wins and losses.

I want to see a team that competes defensively and on the glass. Might not be the same team that is best at putting the ball through the hoop. Time to build the foundation. Based on what we are seeing, hearing and not hearing my confidence is high.

Lol, I am confused. One day we are told no leaders, cannot rebound, etc.

The next-Woah so much potential.

Interesting. I thought we had potential from the start, but who knows.

I guess Pikiell has to cover himself.

They have to at least try the pass and see if he can catch it. He rolls well.

Effort was something that was never consistent under EJ...it was terrible watching a lifeless team. I'm thinking effort won't be an issue under Pikiell.

It is about positive results consistency of the message and respect for the coaching staff, not whether the coach is silent or a tyrant like our last two. Pik. sounds like a man with a message. We will know soon enough.

I cannot remember seeing this much positivity around the program. Refresh my recollection...was it like this when FHJ and Mike Rice were hired? I assume it was, but not sure I remember.

This season is going to be a tough pull for this team. Hopefully they see some success in the way of OOC wins and a couple of conference upsets. As good as this feels right now, if the losses start piling up, the motivation and good feelings may prove to be fleeting. Its a lot easier to get motivated in the summer, when there are no bad results cutting you down, and you have a clean slate. Its quite another when you are in season and dealing with a barrage of negativity.

I think one of the differences is the "known" staff here now that leads to the additional optimism.

.

Absolutely. Me, for sure. That being said, I do think Pickiell gets it done.

Effort today was impressive all around, but I walked away with one as the standout.

MIKE WILLIAMS

Love the work this kid has done on his game!

I am not surprised. People were talking like Nigel Johnson would just come in and replace him. That ignited Williams to another level, no doubt.

That competition will be great for both Williams and Johnson.

I'd have to see it first. I was never high on Williams but one thing I can see is that the kid plays hard and has a desire to win.

Always thought the Big 10 was out of his league. Undersized, not a great ball handler, cannot create his own shot and never really got his shot going.

Is this the year the kid proves me wrong? I sure hope so. Maybe working with Coach Knight has helped him turn the corner.

I fully expect Nigel Johnson to win that spot though.

Thanks for the updates guys. Keep them coming

Well actually the optimism in preseason was really the same. This time feels different. But there isn't much of a difference aside from support staff IMO (without getting into the intekectual makeup of each person).

This team is soooo much better than last year.

This very well may be true this time, but I'll remain skeptical because we seem to hear this EVERY preseason and usually it's not true.

This year is totally different. Alot of factors we never had before. "The perfect storm" in a way.

Bullock needs to get in much better shape before the season starts.

Yeah, if #13 was Bullock, he looks like he's about 15 pounds overweight. Will he be able to defend at the 2/3 positions with that kind of weight? Or is he just a short PF?

Is that not what every coach wants?Plays hard, desire to win?

I want to see more passing out of Williams. I do not care who wins it, as long as they are pushing each other to be better players.

To be honest, I think the best move with him would allow him to play to his mentality this year at the small forward, and have him lose weight over the course of the year.

A kid at that size is going to struggle against D1 guards. He likes to play physical basketball though, so let him play a little small forward, and some shooting guard when the matchup is right.

This. Understand he will probably be the last person off the bench in most situations. Its nice to finally have a deep bench.

For one, I really give props to coaches who teach the position that their player can be at the next level. Mike Rice putting Myles Mack off the ball was not positive for his mentality, and game development. He was a point guard, and would never stand a chance off the ball at the next level IMO.

Bullock is around 6 4. Myles Powell completely transformed himself and will now be a player for the Pirates.

Not only do we seem to have competition for starting spots: Nigel or Williams at 2G, Laurent or Thiam at SF, Freeman or Sa at PF, Sa, Diallo, Gettys or Doorson at C, but we also have 12 kids on 'ship battling for, what is likely to be, part of a 9 man rotation.

I don't know much about this team. Nor would I guess about much. But I'd be shocked if come B1G season more than 9 guys are getting meaningful minutes.

Definitely. If Thiam outplays Laurent, we have a really good situation. Thiam is going to be a player for us. No doubt about it. As long as he stays healthy and puts weight on in the proper manner, he will be a sure playmaker.

I like the versatility of Sa being able to be called a forward or center. It's good for defensive/offensive matchups. Plus, if he has any bit of a shot, take him out a little bit and let Corey and Johnson drive and create more.
