Winkler had the best throw in qualifying. I don't know if results in qualifying carry over in the finals. If now it can lead to an interesting conundrum. Someone broke the world record in the shotput qualifying- if that result does not carry forward, there is a risk he could fail to qualify.

Winkler leads the qualifying finals through 2 rounds. He set a meet and American record with a throw of 82.71 meters or 271 feet, 4 inches. That throw is less than 2 feet shorter than the best in the world this year less than 13 feet short of the world record set in 1986.

Sounds like some impressive performances. It sounds as though our 20 km. walk competitor stands a good chance of qualifying. I hadn't realized that it is now an event in which both women and men participate competing against one another.

Winkler's performance was dominating. He had the 6 best throws in the finals which is 6 rounds. All but one were over 80 meters.
