Agree completely with this and it drives me nuts. I actually copied Eddie Jordan’s knee bend and form and was a career 85% free throw shooter. I also had a father who was a coach for 25 years and drilled into my head that they were FREE throws and I’d better make the majority of them so I practiced 100 a day at the end of each practice when your the most tired to simulate true game conditions. Why these kids can not be taught this is beyond me.Mentioned this is a different thread, but will expand a touch. Our guys have pretty poor form -- and it's all over the place. Several don't bend their knees, but rather kind of jerk the ball up, and finally, and most importantly, they don't seem to be engaged in the process. TAKE YOUR TIME! Concentrate. Follow through. Watch the basket as you shoot. Really need some serious work here.
In watching today's game, it's not like our kids don't have decent mechanics. Right now, it's mental and actually physical. For example, when Corey took his first FT shots, he had just finished driving. Even though he's in great shape, I think he needed to take a few more deep breaths and remember to bend his knees. I've noticed when he misses, he loses concentration and doesn't bend his knees. That's why both FT's clanged off the front of the rim. He's a 76% FT shooter. There's no reason to go 1-4 from the FT line. The same with everyone on the team.Your thoughts?
Some have good mechanics, but some have terrible mechanics. And some of our shots from the floor are...interesting. The one area where we need real work.In watching today's game, it's not like our kids don't have decent mechanics. Right now, it's mental and actually physical. And as a team we shoot a very mediocre 61% from the FT line. But here's the rub: against SB we shot 42% from the line and against Hartford we shot 50% from the line. If we had just shot our season average, we would have won both games strictly from the FT line. Never mind all of the other mistakes made.
Checked on NCAA.com, and RU is 348 out of 351 in free throw shooting percentage. Only 3 teams in Div. I shoot free throws worse than us.Some have good mechanics, but some have terrible mechanics. And some of our shots from the floor are...interesting. The one area where we need real work.
Having said that, this is a team that really busts its rear up and down the court. And Pike is 100% engaged in every second.
The most discouraging aspect is that opponents are shooting better from the foul line than Rutgers the home team who should be more familiar with the baskets/rims and has the crowd yelling against opponents shooters. In Rutgers case missed foul shots can be the difference between winning and losing because the offense has such difficulty scoring. In watching today's game, it's not like our kids don't have decent mechanics. It's the one part of the game that you can almost count on occurring. There's really no reason for a decent athlete who is a basketball player to not shoot 75% from the line. These guys have been playing basketball since they were kids. You would think by now they would know how to make the easiest and most practiced shot in basketball.

If you practice the wrong thing you don’t get better. Some of our players just don’t have good form.
Persistent coaching is required here. Performance at the foul line falls as much on the coaching staff as it does on the player.Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent.
