G Town hires Ewing

Great hire for that program. They just need to make sure someone on his staff has been a college head coach. He will do a very good job there IMO.

If he needs someone who has been a college head coach, what is Patrick bringing to the table? He also has never recruited, so he will need experienced recruiters.

Horrible choice. NBA coaches with the exception of a few aren't cut out for college.

I heard that the Knicks are going to trade away six draft picks in order to get him a decent point guard because, "the future is now" at Georgetown.

Do not agree! This is about appeasing the Alumni but just like St Johns with Mullin in the long run it wont work. Just because you are a great player does not make you a great coach!

How close is Georgetown to the Capitals' arena ? Has the school ever had any intentions of building an arena ?

So a dozen years sitting on an NBA bench w/ a clipboard in your hand qualifies someone to be Head Coach of a Big East team? Similarities are obvious, but Chris Mullin did not even sit on the bench having been in the front office instead. Jordan was at least a head coach for a number of years but we know how that worked out.

Mullin's recruiting is improving, not sure about his coaching.

We'll know in a couple of years how Ewing works out; one never knows but I would not bet on him being there in 3 years.

Ewing should have got an NBA job by now..always waiting and many years as assistant coach. The ex Knick that I always wished would coach the Knicks was Clyde Frazier... always felt Clyde got shafted. Of course, its too late as Clyde just turned 72, man, where did the years go? Clyde was the ultimate team player and solid defensive player. I love listening to Clyde on the broadcasts and his restaurant Clyde's Wine and Dine win NYC is pretty good too.!

CBS writer summed it up -- if they hired him for his name, a bad move. If they hired him to appease John Thompson after firing his son, a worse one.

It could work out. I also could be summering in Maine and wintering next to Trump in Florida, going back and forth on my Cessna.

Michael Graham will also come on board as an academic advisor.

I wonder if Ewing will retain his son from the previous staff?

Better surround him with assistants who have been in the game and have track record recruiting. I know Hawk was thinking the guy that UConn just hired would be a good fit but I would think he is off the market. I assume G-Town went big game hunting and came back empty. Long time since JT Jr and the glory days. One thing he does have going for him is a very rich local recruiting area but like NJ is well covered by many programs. If I am a BE opponent I am thinking this could have gone much worse.

I do not see this working out well fo them in a conference that sent 7 schools to the dance and has turned out to be a pretty salty conference. With the turnover his program start next to De Paul in the basement and is a long way up.....how many learn on the job college coaches have been successful...its going to a messy seperation in a few years

Good luck Big Man! He has put in his time and I think/hope he does a good job at Georgetown. My favorite Knick ever. By a margin.

By the way Mullin inherited a team where Mussini was his best player. He went from 1-17 in league to 7-11. In a league that got 7 of 10 teams to the dance. Wins over Syracuse (road), Butler, Providence (road), Marquette, SHU. Those hating on Mullin aren't watching.

Every first-time head coach should have a coach that has been there on their staff (see RU football with Kill vs. what we had last year). Head coaches will be faced with things assistants never had to deal with - just a fact of life. The reason Ewing is not comparable to Eddie or Mullin is that he was an active, teaching assistant in the NBA, specializing in working with big men. Look up interviews with some of his pupils and listen to what they say about him. He is going to be a GREAT teacher at the college level.

Eddie had more coaching experience.
