Game 2: Rutgers Women's Hoops vs. Coppin State

107 - 33. I thought CVS didn’t schedule games against weak teams. “To be the best, you have to play the best” was her mantra at one time. I am not sure players really learn as much as they could from such a weak opponent?

GEE,maybe it is because we are SO dominant, and not that they are sooo weak. Have fun and just enjoy for Christ's sake.

Second game of the season. Working 5 new players into the rotation (2 true freshmen, 1 redshirt freshman who was injured last year, KK Sanders who was injured and didn't play last year, and a grad transfer). Who should we have played in our 2nd game? UCONN? Notre Dame?

To be fair, it isn't a great schedule. But it would be wrong not to realize:
- Many, many teams seem to be playing rather modest schedules. Actually, Rutgers for many years played one of the toughest schedules.
- Exactly what you say - throwing them into too much of a fire is simply going to produce losses. And perhaps even less learning.

Out here in Arizona the schedule is much, much worse than Rutgers - we play Texas and otherwise all weak teams. But in the paper, the head coach pointed out that many of the agreements were made (if not finalized) before the WNIT championship last season and she promised an upgraded schedule next year. I believe her. It is really a tightrope walk - a schedule that teaches enables you to be successful and doesn't give you any damaging losses.

South Alabama was like 26-4 last year and one of the best 3-pt shooting teams. We have exactly 1 blowout team on the schedule and it was today to get our FIVE players used to the RAC and we scored almost 110. Give it a rest. Great job ladies

I don’t mind one or two “Sisters of the Poor” on the schedule before the conference kicks in, especially with this team. It’s not often we get 100+ pts from a CVS team regardless, so I’ll take it and look forward to getting a head of steam going into the B1G portion of the season.
(But, I agree in general, I like to be field tested)

Funny. I remember the complaints when we started the season with road trips against Cal and Stanford. And other tough early season games. Now, after 2 games, we play too soft a schedule?? Let’s enjoy it and be get ready for the conference schedule which starts in December.

It is not unusual for top-ranked programs to spread the wealth a little in their geographic areas. It is not always about accumulating Ws with a so-called cupcake schedule. And, yes, I believe that RU will return to the upper echelon of WCBK. Regardless of team ranking, CVS is a history-making coach who, I suspect, may think more about these things these days.

I looked at the B1G schedules - I have a spreadsheet because I track wins and losses.

Rutgers is about middle of the conference in terms of how challenging the schedule is. Rutgers did not schedule anyone that (in the abstract, at least) they would not be favored to beat; about 4 or so of the games would be expected to be "challenging". Coppin State was, as someone said, the only obvious blow-out candidate.

The following teams all have obviously "weak" schedules - Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State and Wisconsin. Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State are among the better, there are a couple teams that are hard to assess, including Maryland, because they play a few really good teams, and the rest of the schedule, not-so-much.

It is the absence of strong challengers on the schedule that is most obvious about Rutgers' schedule.

As I mentioned above, it is a balancing act between considerations like getting your team ready and not hurting your teams eventual potential chance to make the NCAA's.

Personally, I would like our OOC schedule to be a bit more challenging, but what I really would like is for us to get back to scheduling some of our away OOC games against teams that are closer to home. Teams like Temple, St Johns, Princeton, Seton Hall, Villanova, Lasalle, etc. Then we could have more bus trips (or I would even drive myself). The only games we are having trips to are MD and Penn State (other than to Fordham, which was an exhibition and pretty short notice) and frankly, I don't go to Penn State as I think it is too far. There are plenty of schools within a 4 hour or so drive.
