Any win is a great day, especially against a P5 conf team. Unfortunately this win had pimples all over it. Some minor , many more which are going to get uglier in coming weeks.
Atmosphere:
I thought this was one of the tamest Homecomings I've been to. Not much juice inside or outside the stadium. I attribute that to the Noon start and I think many are feeling a lack of enthusiasm right now. Students that do come are great and there's about 2 sections worth of dedicated and loud students. But way too many empty student section seats and too many leaving at halftime. I personally know many students who wake up at 7am, "tailgate" on college age and never make it to the stadium. From the pictures it looks like hundreds are with them. Unfortunately that situation will become even more obvious as the weather gets colder. The fan base as a whole needs to step up honestly.
Team:
75% run plays. It didn't work against PSU and it ain't gonna work starting in 2 weeks. Of the pass plays I don't believe we had more than 4 attempts beyond 15 yards and two of those were INTs. Coaching staff has to try Rettig because it's only getting a guy that hands off from of Laviano. The penalties are embarrassingly bad on both sides of the ball. Defense is what it is. I thought the DLine would be better than it has been. Not getting to the QB enough and not making tackles when they have guys in front of them.
Going Forward:
Flood is our man for at least this year and I think he should get next year as well if he can savage some sort of positive from this season. People that want him fired mid season have no idea how damaging that is and the awful position that puts our program in. I honestly hope we get a new University President this summer because that is what is needed to start this path in the CORRECT way! Must change the philosophy and attitude from the top! So that means getting a Pres and Board who embraces being Big Time.
