Has RU ever hired a HC in FB w prior HC experience ?

Maybe this is shouldn't be a major sticking point as make it out to be.

I started a new thread on Shea - please check it out.

He got a raw deal, here. I know a number of guys who played for him and they all speak highly of him. I know a couple of guys who played for both Shea and Graber who have told me that Shea was a better gameday coach.

He was a lax disciplinarian at Rutgers, couldn't recruit top talent and had ZERO organizational assistance from the school.

He is, however, very good at what he does - and what he does is train quarterbacks.

I agree and my post wasnt anti Shea. I can understand on Schiano but some here wanted Golden or Cristobal because they were former head coaches, among other reasons. Not that they were good head coaches. But it was like hiring a young coordinator was a horrible thing. Everyone deserves a shot if they deserve one.

Shea actually had a winning record as HC for those 2 years at San Jose State.

At RU he could not recruit even average talent and had no rapport with the HS coaches in NJ. I remember it was the height of recruiting season when he was hired and he decided he needed a vacation prior to moving to NJ. Do you think Ash will do that?

So much for hiring an experienced head coach.

Just for fun - George Foster Sanford was head coach at Columbia and Virginia before coaching at Rutgers. J. Wilder Tasker was head coach at UConn and William and Mary, Howard Gargan was head coach at Fordham etc... I know it's not relevant but it does respond to the OP's question.

Why would we hire an HC with exp-our AD has no football experience either....only at Rutgers. Maybe it all works out but on the surface it doesn't look so great-we are in a top of the line conference you figure exp would be a pre-requisite -support both of them but agree with OPs word - 'odd'!

Only at Rutgers? What about Georgia, Missouri and Maryland?

Mullen had no HC experience when he was hired at Mississippi State off Myers' staff. That seems to have worked out.

Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, Stanford's David Shaw, Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Clemson's Dabo Sweeny, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, among others were first time head coaches when hired.

All the recent B1G hires have been coaches with head coaching experience. Urban, Harbaugh, Franklin, Dantonio, Chryst, Riley, Beckman, Hazel, Edsel.

Big boy conference usually goes with coaches who have experience.

Just pointing out some of the hires of first time P5 head coaches who has been successful. So it can be done.

But half of those coaches didn't succeed and/or have had ordinary results. Prior head coaching experience doesn't equal success.
